Ethan's performance in the Math Total area was in the Well Above Average range compared to the performance of a national sample of 7th grade students. His
percentile score indicates that his Math Total score was equal to or higher than 98% of the students in the national 7th grade comparison group. The Math Total area
includes Math Concepts, Math Problem Solving, and Math Computation. The Math Concepts and Problem Solving test requires that students demonstrate an
understanding of, and ability to apply, a variety of concepts in the following areas: numeration, number theory, data interpretation, pre-algebra, algebra,
measurement and geometry. The Math Computation test provides an appropriate representation of the core computational skills students are learning at their grade
level. Ethan's Math Computation score was in the Well Above Average range. His Math Concepts and Problem Solving score was in the Well Above Average range.
The Core Total score includes the Reading Total score, the Math Total score and the Language Total score. Ethan's Core Total performance was equal to or higher
than 99% of the students in the national 7th grade comparison group.
Ethan's performance in the Science area was in the Well Above Average range. His Social Studies score was in the Well Above Average range. The knowledge and
skills measured by the Science test comes from the areas of life science, earth and space sciences, biology, chemistry, and physical sciences. The content of the
Social Studies questions are taken from the areas of geography, history, economics, government, citizenship, and other sociological patterns.
Ethan took the TerraNova Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) in May 2015. His performance is summarized in the table and graph on this report. Scale
Scores compare Ethan's performance with that of other 7th grade students in a national sample. The National Percentile Rank Score indicates what percentage of
the sample group Ethan scored as well as or better than. Ethan's performance in the Reading Total area was in the Well Above Average range with a national
percentile score of 99%. The Reading Total area includes the Vocabulary and Comprehension subtests. The Vocabulary portion of the test assesses general
vocabulary knowledge. Students are given grade-appropriate reading vocabulary and the meanings of words are tested in context. The Comprehension test
assesses comprehension through the use of multiple-choice questions following a reading passage. Students must construct meaning from passages, requiring them
to extract details, analyze characters, identify main ideas, interpret events, distinguish between fact and opinion, as well as draw upon their own background
knowledge. Ethan's performance was in the Well Above Average range in Vocabulary and the Well Above Average range in Comprehension.
Ethan's performance in the Language Total area was in the Well Above Average range with a national percentile score of 99%. The Language Total subtests include
Language Usage and Expression and Language Mechanics. Ethan's performance in Language was in the Well Above Average range with a national percentile score
being equal to or higher than 99% of the 7th grade students in the national sample. The Language test assesses the proper use of capitalization, punctuation, skill in
usage and expression, proofreading and editing in grade-appropriate sentences, poems, passages, letters, clauses, quotations and dialogue. Ethan's performance in
Spelling was in the Well Above Average range. Spelling is not included in the Core Total. The emphasis is on the recognition of commonly misspelled words and use
of spelling rules, as well as identifying correctly spelled words in the context of sentences and phrases, which is a valuable proofreading skill.

DESCRIPTIVE CATEGORY: Gives a verbal description for the commonly used standard score.
SCALE SCORE (SS): Raw scores are converted to scale scores. The scale score tells the distance of the student’s raw score from the mean raw score, taking into
account the standard deviation (degree of variability). In other words, the scale score describes a student’s location on an achievement continuum. The scale
corresponds to typical performances of grade groups on each test at certain times of the year. They have no built-in meaning. These numbers are used to compute
other statistics.
GRADE EQUIVALENT (GE): This score is often misinterpreted. Grade level scores have limited meaning since students at different grades take different levels of
the test and each level has different content. Keep in mind that your student is only being compared with other same grade students in the “normed” sample. The
students are not being compared to other grade levels.
EXPLANATION OF REPORT TERMS
RS-RAW SCORE: The number of questions a student gets right.
TI-Total items in the subtest.
NATIONAL STANINE (NS): This statistic is a coarse grouping of percentile ranks or normalized standard scores that range from 1 to 9. They are often used with
large groups of students to determine specific skill weaknesses for the purpose of small group instruction. They do not describe a student’s developmental level or
measure growth.
NOTE: The percentile ranking (NPR) is the best number to use to see how your student compares with other students of the same age and grade. It is also helpful
for measuring your student’s growth from year to year. If your child scores in the 85% this year, and does similar in a year, then s/he has made a year’s growth in that
area.
NATIONAL PERCENTILE RANK (NPR): These percentiles show a student’s standing within the group of students in the same grade that was tested at the same
time of year during the national standardization. These scores are especially useful for profile analysis and determining the areas of relative strength and weakness
for an individual student. A percentile rank of 68 means that the student scored better than 68 percent of the other children in the same grade in the norming sample.
