Look at the following slides. What
have you observed?
What is grammar?
- refers to the rules and regulations that govern spoken
and written language
- it is through proper grammar that we are able to
communicate in a clear manner that people can
understand
- it is a bridge between what you mean and what the reader
or listener understand
Classic English Grammar example:
“Let’s eat, Grandma,” rather than “Let’s eat Grandma.”
Take note how a simple comma ( , ) makes a lot of difference in the meaning of the
sentence!
Good grammar means writing or
speaking in such a way that your choice
of words is understandable and follows
the basic rules of sentence construction,
punctuation and spelling.
Activity 2: Spot the Grammar Mishaps
1. “Open seven days a week, and weekends too.”
- New Zealand restaurant
2. “ Please leave your values at the front desk.”
- hotel elevator, Paris
3. “Fried milk, children sandwiches, roast cattle and
boiled sheep.”
- a menu in Vienna
4. “Teeth extracted by the latest methodists.”
- in an advertisement by a Hongkong dentist
How Important is English Grammar?
- In teaching, grammar plays a vital role in how effective a
teacher conveys his lessons
- It is vital in every sentence you read or write, speak or hear
- Grammar is everywhere, we use it at home, in school, at work,
and in the streets
- Job interviews, job opportunities
