- Hi, my name is El Conroy and I am a Microsoft Partner with FAJ SYSTEMS LLC. As you may know, Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. My goal is to advise you of the impact of this milestone on your current server environment and to help you take the necessary steps now to minimize disruption and keep your business moving forward.
- As you know, the goal of any business is to grow. Businesses that earn more revenue often hire more people. All of this leads to increased wealth for business owners and their employees and contributes to a healthier, more vibrant economy. According to a 2013 Boston Consulting Group study of 4000 international small and mid-size business decision makers, there are dramatic differences between tech-savvy companies that take advantage of the cloud and other modern technologies, compared to those who do not. The study showed that tech-savvy companies grew revenue 15% faster than those who were not leveraging as much technology. In addition, these tech-savvy companies created new jobs nearly twice as fast as their less savvy counterparts. Interestingly, this growth was consistent regardless of country (developed or emerging), industry, or whether the business was run by a man or a woman. For example, in emerging markets, small and mid-size tech leaders grew just as quickly as their peers in developed countries – sometimes faster. Moreover, a key finding of the study revealed Microsoft to be the technology provider of choice for tech-savvy small and midsize businesses. Almost 60% of tech-savvy companies rated Microsoft as their “partner when it comes to preparing your company for new and changing technology.”
- So, what does this mean for Windows Server 2003 end of support? Simply put, there has never been a better time to modernize your infrastructure on new servers running Windows Server 2012 R2. In doing so, you can realize the increased revenue and job growth already enjoyed by tech-savvy small and mid-size companies around the world. And you’ll be in a perfect position to take your first steps toward the cloud. But the clock is ticking. Support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003 will end on July 14th, 2015. This rapidly approaching milestone opens a window of opportunity to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 now. Delaying these migrations will present significant risks and complications that will only increase as the date approaches.
- There are a number of reasons why customers should not wait to begin their migration from Windows Server 2003 or Windows Small Business Server 2003. No updates 37 critical updates were released in 2013 for Windows Server 2003/R2 under Extended Support. No updates will be developed or released after end of support, leaving these systems vulnerable to software and security issues. No compliance Lack of compliance with various standards and regulations can be devastating. This may include various regulatory and industry standards for which compliance can no longer be achieved. Organizations that need to maintain PCI compliance are aware that unsupported software could mean inability to validate compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). All major credit card companies require their merchants and service providers who store, process or transmit cardholder data to comply with PCI DSS. Merchants and providers who process over 6 million Visa transactions a year (and are therefore Level 1 merchants) must undergo an onsite PCI assessment. No protection Both virtualized and physical instances of Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable and would not pass a compliance audit. Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 servers are also affected. Staying put will cost more in the end. Maintenance costs for aging hardware will also increase. Added costs will be incurred for intrusion detection systems, more advanced firewalls, network segmentation, and so on—simply to isolate Windows Server 2003 servers. Many applications will also cease to be supported, once the operating system they are running on is unsupported. This includes all Microsoft applications. Now is the time to act Resellers must help customers start planning their migrations now.

- Here are some examples of small and mid-size customers that have benefitted from replacing their aging infrastructure with modern servers running Windows Server 2012 R2. For EmpireCLS Worldwide Chauffeured Services, technology has always been a competitive differentiator. But when it decided to license its dispatch and reservation systems software to other companies, it suddenly became a hosting provider and needed more sophisticated data center capabilities and lower IT costs. EmpireCLS decided to upgrade its servers to the Windows Server 2012 operating system to take advantage of improvements in networking, availability, remote access, and other areas. With these new features, EmpireCLS can provision hosting customers faster, deliver high availability at lower costs, and continue to reduce operating costs while growing the business. In fact, EmpireCLS has reduced IT costs by 30 percent during a period when the business grew 30 percent. - OTRUM provides interactive television solutions and content to the hospitality industry, including large hotel chains. Many of OTRUM’s physical servers were aging and needed replacement. To spend less on purchasing and maintaining physical servers and to reduce the cost of power and cooling at its two data centers, OTRUM wanted to expand virtualization technology in its server environment. The company thought it needed VMware to virtualize. But Working with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner OfficeTeam, OTRUM learned that virtualization software was included in its licenses for Windows Server. With Hyper-V virtualization technology built-in to Windows Server 2012, OTRUM could efficiently deploy, scale, and manage a virtualized server infrastructure. By running several virtual servers on one physical machine, OTRUM reduced the size of its physical infrastructure by 50 percent, saving 65 percent on hardware and maintenance costs. - During Hurricane Sandy the New York Law Offices of Aaron I. Katsman, P.C. continued to operate, even after losing power.
