INSTRUCTION TO THE USER
This module would provide you an educational experience
while independently accomplishing the task at your own pace or
time. It aims as well to ensure that learning is unhampered by
health and other challenges. It covers the topic about introduction
to Organic Chemistry.
Reminders in using this module:
1. Keep this material neat and intact.
2. Answer the pretest first to measure what you know and what
to be learned about the topic discussed in this module.
WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)
3. 3. Accomplish the activities and exercises as aids and
reinforcement for better understanding of the lessons.
4. Answer the post-test to evaluate your learning.
5. Do not take pictures in any parts of this module nor post it to

C. Pre-test:
1. What Do You Know About Organic Chemistry?
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing
molecules' structure, characteristics, content, reactions, and
manufacture. Organic chemistry was once limited to the
study of molecules created by living organisms, but it has
since expanded to encompass human-made chemicals (e.g., plastics).
2. What is the importance of Organic Chemistry in our daily lives?
Organic compounds have given several fuels, such as diesel, petrol,
cooking gas, and so on. (vii) Rubber and Plastic There are many different
varieties of rubber and plastic, including polyethylene, neoprene rubber,
polypropylene, and others. Organic chemicals are the only ones that

4. belong in this category. (viii) Cosmetics, such as creams, soaps, paints,
camphor, oils, and perfumes

ACTIVITY 3 - CONTRIBUTION OF CHEMISTRY THROUGH TIME
Make a time line showing the contributions of chemistry in society
and technology. Concentrate in one field or area. For example, you can
work on organic chemistry’s contribution in the field of criminology.
WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)
7. ACTIVITY 4: ORGANIC CHEMISTRY CONTRIBUTIONS TO OTHER
FIELDS
WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)
Scientist identified a grne from a virus of a papaya plant
Enzymes are proteins that break down food (proteins that can control chemical reactions)
The crucial gene was duplicated.
Other DNA was added to both ends of the essential gene to produce a gene package.
Gold pellets were coated on a microscopic scale.
Plants were produced from papaya cells.
8. GIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY TO OTHER
SCIENCES LIKE AGRICULTURE, MEDICINE, FOOD AND
CRIMINOLOGY
(You can paste a picture of any sciences or industry and cite their
contributions.)
A forensic chemist is called for help in order to provide an evidence that
can prove the crime scientifically. This is the main reason why organic
chemistry is important in criminology; the knowledge in organic
chemistry is useful and vital for investigating crimes solving cases.
the role of organic chemistry in developing flavor enhancer is very
important in food industry as people like to have a tastier meal. While
organic preservative mostly works by drain out the liquid of the food
substance, moisture preserver helps to keep the moist within food or food
ingredients
WPU-QSF-ACAD-82A Rev. 00 (09.15.20)
9. The importance of Organic Chemistry in MEDICINE is the compounds
used as medicines are most often organic compounds, which are often
divided into the broad classes of small organic molecules (atorvastatin,
fluticasone, clopidogrel) and "biologics" (infliximab, erythropoietin,
insulin glargine), the latter of which are most often medicinal
preparations of proteins (natural and recombinant antibodies, hormones,
etc.)
The importance of Organic Chemistry in AGRICULTURE is the Chemical
materials developed to assist in the production of food, feed, and fiber
include scores of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other
pesticides, plant growth regulators, fertilizers, and animal feed
supplements.

10. ACTIVITY 5: COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS/EQUIPMENT
USED IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Paste a photo of different equipment/apparatus used in organic chemistry
(at least 5) and write its functions or uses.

funnels are also available. On top
of the funnel-shaped part there is

adapters are used in conjunction
with temperature probes such as
Traceable Kangaroo Thermometer -
Digital these adapters allow the
user to maintain a vacuum on their
glassware system while being able
to have a consistent readout of the
internal temperature of the system.
Evaporating dishes are used to
evaporate excess solvents – most
commonly water – to produce a
concentrated solution or a solid
precipitate of the dissolved
substance. Most are made of
porcelain or borosilicate glass.

a. John Dalton c. Friedrich Wohler
b. James Chadwick d. None of these
a.
Test II. Answer the following questions
comprehensively. Write your answers in a long bond paper.
1. Explain how organic chemistry might be useful in a career
you are planning to pursue?
It helps examines the chemistry of the criminal brain in order to
detect changes in behavior, story modifications, and the discovery
of important information. The perpetrator is subjected to a variety
of chemical tests in order to uncover the truth about the crime and
prevent it from occurring.
2. Why would a firefighter, a pastry chef, an environmental
health inspector, and a dental assistant need to
understand organic chemistry?
For a firefighter, this means knowing what type of
extinguisher to use for a given type of fire.
For a pastry maker, knowing how much of a specific
ingredient to use and how to combine ingredients to achieve
a good-tasting pastry is essential.
For an environmental health inspector, knowing the impacts
of various substances released into the environment is
essential.
For a dental assistant, knowing how to properly combine
chemicals in the production of dental amalgam is essential.
