2. October 10th
They sneaked through the hole through the fence. That their parents didn’t know
where they were only increased their excitement. The school playground was pitch
black. Sneaking in during the day was one thing, sneaking in at night was another.
With only the light of the early October sun to guide them, they made their way
hurriedly across the school compound to the other side where the fence was low
enough to jump over; having decided against taking the main road so as to reduce the
length of the journey.
3. Stephen lived a few blocks from the community primary school. His parents were
wealthy. They lived in a one storey building. The ground floor consisted of a large living
room, a dining room, a small library, a kitchen and a bedroom. The top floor, reached
by a winding staircase, had 3 bedrooms and a dressing room. It was a lot of space.
Stephen’s parents pampered him and threw parties for him all the time. This time
around it was his birthday and having heard of the preparations being made for it, I and
jimmy were not prepared to miss it for anything.
4. As we got to the house the whole place was lit. It was crowded. There was so much to
eat and drink. Before we knew it, it was already 9pm and many people were beginning
to make their way home. I and jimmy started home. On a second thought we decided
to take the shorter route again through the primary school.
We had barely made it over the low fence, when we heard a rustle behind us. We
turned sharply in that direction but all was still, a sharp rough wind making a mockery
of our fear so we thought and immediately turned and headed straight to the other
fence from where we made our entry.
5. A little while later, I felt I saw a shadow behind the flower hedges close to the
playground. “I think we should hurry up” I told Jimmy. He laughed, ‘you have always
been scared all your life. Never had the balls for anything’ I didn’t blame him. This was
not the right time to argue. We had to get home as fast as possible.
That was when Jimmy saw him, he shouted and ran. Being the faster one I got to the
fence before him and forced my way through the opening which now seemed to me as
too small for my size.
6. Ken’, I heard his voice as Jimmy screamed. The hefty man held him, dragging him to
the far end of the school into the surrounding bushes.
‘Jimmy’, I shouted his name. The wind stronger now, muffled his frantic cry. I was no
match for the man who just kidnapped my friend.
‘Help me’, He was screaming.
‘Somebody please, please help me’. The wind whipped the cry from his lips and
scattered it through the night.
