2. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Leading British mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that it is currently
involved in talks with Europe’s largest cable company, Liberty Global.
However despite reports of a possible merger, Vodafone has reiterated that a
grouping of both businesses is not on the cards; rather, talks are expected to be
mostly about a possible asset swap between the two companies.

3. VODAFONE AND LIBERTY GLOBAL TEAM UP
Speculation regarding a merger between the two organisations reached its
height earlier this year when just last month, Liberty Global’s chairman, John
Malone, said Vodafone’s European mobile networks would be a ‘great fit’ for his
own cable assets.
These included the British telecom company’s businesses in Germany, the UK
and the Netherlands, which accounts for 40% of Vodafone’s sales and earnings
and up to three-quarters of Liberty Global’s.
However, two representatives privy to the talks had expressed that an exchange
of assets would have significant impact on the composition of both carriers.

4. VODAFONE AND LIBERTY GLOBAL TEAM UP
One structure discussed was the merging of units belonging to both Vodafone
and Liberty Global in Western Europe, whilst separating the companies’
operations in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The result would be the creation of two separate entities; one unit that focuses
on developed markets in Germany and the UK, while the other concentrates on
emerging markets.
