16. Unique to Mark –

proclaim the Gospel to all
creation
•Whoever believes and is
baptized will be saved
•Whoever does not believe
will be condemned
17. Unique to Mark – Ending of Mark
16
• These signs will accompany those who
believe:
• They will cast out demons in Jesus’ name
• They will speak in new tongues
• They will pick up serpents with their hands
• If they drink any deadly poison it will not hurt
them
• They will lay their hands on the sick, and they
will recover
18. Unique to Mark – Ending of
Mark 16
• On the first day of the week (Sunday) the risen
Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene - out of
whom He had driven seven demons
• When Mary reported what she saw to those who had
been with Him they did not believe
• After this, Jesus appeared in a different form to two
more of His followers.
• Again, the rest did not believe the reports about
seeing the risen Jesus
• Later He appeared to the eleven (minus Judas) and
rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they did not believe the reports about Him
after He had risen from the dead.
19. Why the long ending of Mark is
in our Bible
• Around the year 150 Justin Martyr quotes from Mark 16:20.
• Iraneaus, in Against Heresies (from the year 180), references the long ending of
Mark. Iranaeus was taught by Polycarp, who was taught by the Apostle John.
• Many other church fathers quote from Mark 16:9-20.
• Without this ending it leaves the disciples scared and unsure. The other Gospels
all end on much more positive notes.
• 99% of manuscripts include Mark 16:9-20!
• Approximately 1640 copies of Mark manuscripts… only 3(!) do not have the
longer ending! One of those is from the 11th century.
Editor's Notes
1 Peter 5:13 = Peter and Mark
Acts 13:13 = Paul and Mark
Acts 1:13
9:24: This father was broken. He had undoubtedly gone to every doctor and Pharisee in the area to heal his son, and none were able. The Lord did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Through trials and adversities we realize just how small we are, but consequently we realize just how big God is. Through these tough times we are able to put more faith in the Lord because we realize that all the times we have tried in our own power we have failed. But once we put our faith in the Lord, we succeed, regardless of the outcome.
When we earnestly ask the Lord to help us with our unbelief He will. When we ask anything according to His will it will be done. And the Lord desires for every person to have greater faith than they currently have. So when we are truly seeking to have more faith, the Lord will grant it to us.
* While special prayers for healing are uttered by Christians (Acts 9:40, 28:8, James 5:15), effective prayer is a continuous posture, not simply an emergency procedure
4:38 = eyewitness detail that was likely conveyed to Mark by Peter
4:39 = Jesus displays His divine power over nature. In the OT, God calms the waves (Job 12:15, Ps 33:7) and the storm (Job 28:25, Ps 107:25-30, Amos 4:13)
7:24 = Tyre is outside of Galilee
7:24 = Jesus can not be hid. Moses could be hid (Exodus 2:1-3). And Elijah could be hid (1 Kings 17:2-3).
2:27-28 = Jesus emphasizes that man is not to be confined by the Sabbath but rather that the Sabbath is given as a gift to man (for spiritual and physical refreshment)
2:27-28 = The Sabbath was instituted by God for man’s benefit, not for his bondage… He had given the Sabbath in the first place. Therefore He had authority to decide what was permissible and what was forbidden on that day. Certainly the Sabbath was never intended to prohibit works of necessity or deeds of mercy. Christians are not obligated to keep the Sabbath. That day was given to the nation of Israel. – Believer’s Bible Commentary
2:27-28 = Now the rest is not in a day but in a Person. Now the law is replaced by the Lord. Our rest is in Him. The whole subject is spelled out in Hebrews 4, where the discussion revolves around the whole subject of rest – creation rest, Canaan rest, and Calvary rest.
9:48 = “Give me a passion for soul, O Lord!”
9:48 = Worms and fires are images of putrid decay (acts 12:23) and flaming destruction (Rev 14:11), but eternal worm and unquenchable fire (Acts 9:43), refers to everlasting torment.
9:49 =
3:13-15 = Why did Jesus choose 12 apostles? Because it corresponds to the 12 tribes of Israel (Matthew 19:28), showing the continuity between the OT and NT
3:20-21 = What is a fanatic? A fanatic is anybody who loves Jesus more than you! Most people are fine with somebody going to church sometimes, but when people live sold out for Jesus it confuses, convicts, and frightens people
3:20-21 = Jesus’ half-brothers Jude and James would later believe in Him (1 Corinthians 9:4-5)
8:22-26 = Only recorded instance of a gradual healing that occurred through miracle… This could be descriptive of the gradual comprehension of the truth of the ministry and purpose of Jesus. The disciples did not immediately grasp the intention of Jesus. Their understanding was slowly opened.
8:23: Jesus took this blind man by the hand, and guided him to the place where He desired to heal this man. In the same way Jesus takes us by the hand and guides us for healing. The decision we have is do we allow Him to take us where He desires. If the blind man would not have let Jesus heal him he would have never been able to see. It is about obedience to Jesus, even when it might not make as much sense as we would like. We need to have faith that even if God is guiding us “out of the town”, a place where we are unfamiliar or scared, that He is looking out for us and is using this time of faith testing for growth and guidance.
8:24: God might only reveal to us part of His truth in the beginning. This may be to see if we will continue to seek the Lord to find the truth or if we will try to find our own truth. The Lord sometimes has us wait to see His will, or to understand His Word better. But if we are seeking after Him He will help us to grow. The question is when God only shows us part of the answer we are looking for will we be discouraged that He didn’t answer it completely or encouraged because He is continuing to show you truth in your life.
4:26-29: The seed, like in the parable of the sower, represents the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If we share the Gospel and people become saved it is still through the power of God, something that we cannot fully understand, but must have faith. Just like when you plant a seed and it begins to grow, you may not know exactly how it grows , you may think “well water, sun, etc is why it grows” but why should that help a seed grow? in the same way all we can do is all that we know how to do: pray, tell them about the love of Jesus, show them Jesus in our life, etc… but the growth that takes place in their life and the saving grace of God can’t be fully explained. But we must have faith that when we do our part God will do His. We may not understand the awe-inspiring power of Salvation that God offers, but we just need child like faith to get saved, not a masters in theology. “he knoweth not how” verse 27- I might not know all that the mysteries of God, but the faith that i have is all that I need.
4:26-29 = Your witness may be weak and your efforts my seem to influence few, but God’s Word is a great growth agent
4:26-29 = Life, especially spiritual life, remains a mystery. We don’t know really “how” a plant grows (we know it needs soil and sun and water, but why should that cause it to grow more than anything else? Without God the farmer can produce nothing.
14:51-52 = Many believe that man to be Mark himself
Despite 99% of manuscripts containing the long ending of Mark3 the ESV includes a note at Mark 16:8 that says this “some of the earliest manuscripts do not include Mark 16:9-20.” “Some” actually means only two!
Virtually all other Greek manuscripts (besides two of the “major ones”) include it!
The two main would be Vaticanis and Sinaticus
