CRC Competes in Solar Regatta
The Solar Club and SHPE/MESA engineering student
club are building boats to enter in the annual Northern
California Solar Regatta, sponsored by SMUD. The
Solar Club, advised by Construction Professor Ryan
Connally, and SHPE/MESA Club, advised by Physics
Professor Efrain Lopez, have made their solar boats and
will be competing with other colleges and universities
from Fresno to the Oregon border
next weekend at the Rancho Seco
Recreational Area. This academic
competition provides a chance for
students to learn about renewable
energy using solar while celebrating
the aquatic history of California.
Students can either retrofit existing
boats or build their own design
from scratch. The boats will be
judged for speed, distance, maneuverability and more. Good luck teams! For more
information, click here.
Communications Students Learn About Non-Profits
The students of Communication Studies class COMM361 (Communication Experience) engage in relevant projects that
benefit both the student and the greater Sacramento community. This semester the students focused on 501c3 organizations
in the area, and created a recruitment campaign for that 501c3. All of the organizations participated in the Big Day of
Giving last Tuesday. Every semester the students’ work is submitted to the City of Sacramento Office of the Mayor, and
Mayor Kevin Johnson has always been most gracious with his support and comments to the students. The students
chose the following organizations and created recruitment campaigns for Celi Inc., Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Habitat for
Humanity, National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency and Sacramento SPCA. In addition to being submitted to
the City of Sacramento upon completion, Communications Professor Ellen Arden-Ogle said the campaigns also go directly
to the non-profit.
