Dear Judges:
My name is Duncan Ingram and today I will speak with you about Biomechanical Engineering. I
have always been fascinated by the way that objects work. Through my project I was able to
investigate something I love and discover exactly what was exciting about it. As a future goal I
plan on receiving a degree in Biomechanical Engineering and a minoring in Sports Medicine.
That is why I chose to do my senior project on the Biomechanics of Barefoot Running.
The product that I designed was a shoe and a mold of a foot. The reason that I designed a shoe
was mainly for foot protection as described by my research paper. My final design came after
several failed attempts with many different designs. My self-titled shoe is actually not a shoe at
all, but a sandal that sole purpose is to protect the foot. In actuality my research paper altered my
design to the best possible design I could have created.
Through my research I have discovered that I would like to pursue a career in biomechanical
engineering. This project has made me realize that my creative side is actually consumed with
science and mathematics which I now enjoy doing. I plan to study biomechanics at the
University of Oregon. This is almost a perfect college location for me because the Nike and
Newton labs are both located within thirty miles of the school. This could mean future potential
in the design industry with a top name company.
The Senior Project has been a very large learning experience including positive and negative
portions. Whether it was finishing something late at night to make sure it was perfect or wearing
a suit to a high school for an entire day. Summing up what the senior project has done for me as
a person is beyond words, but if given the opportunity I would repeat it all again.
Sincerely,
Duncan Ingram
