12. KEY DRUG CONCEPTS
DRUGS
-Any substances or chemicals which when taken into the body either though nasal, oral,
transdermal or intravenous way have psychological, emotional and behavioral effects on a person.
DRUGS OF ABUSE
-Are drugs commonly abused by the users.
DRUG DEPENDENCE
-is a cluster of physiological, behavioral and cognitive phenomena of variable intensity in which the
use of drug takes on a high priority thereby creating a strong desire to take the substance.
DRUG MISUSE
-is the use of a substance incoherent or inconsistent with the prescribed dosage of frequency of
use.
DRUG ABUSE
-is the use of a substance for non-medicinal purposes. Abuse leads to organ damage like brain
damage and liver damage, addiction and torubled behavioral patterns.
24. HOW DRUGS ENTER INTO THE BODY
THROUGH THE MOUTH
THROUGH THE USE OF AN INJECTION.
MAYBE INHALED THROUGH THE NOSE OR THE MOUTH.
MAY BE DIRECTLY APPLIED TO THE BODY- lotions, creams,
patches, and ointments.
MAYBE IMPLANTED OR PLACED UNDER THE SKIN.
-people with cancer are often treated with drug implants.

situations:
1. A saleslady at a department store earns the minimum
wage. Raising two young kids on her own, she gets really
stressed about budgeting her finances. Her friend offered
her a pinch of powdered drugs to let her relax. After trying
it, she liked the effects and is planting to continue using it.
What do you think will be the impact of drug use to her
economic situation?

taking care of his four children. He lives with the family of his
wife. He is not in good terms with his in-laws. He began to
get bored with his life and attempted to try shabu. After a
few weeks, he starts getting addicted to it.
How would shabu use impact his family life?

drugs. He already owes moneyfrom his relatives. He said that he
will use it to find jobs. Since the family knows about his
addiction, they no longer lend him money. He is now looking

32. ACTIVITY 3: MAIL SENT!
-Students are given situations in which they are given time to go to the computer
laboratory to reply an email sent from a friend asking for suggestions for a
particular party.
SITUATION:
Your friend sent you a personal e-mail that shows an invitation to a grand party in
his family’s house in the province.
He said that there will be unlimited alcoholic beverages. He added that some of
his friends will bring “secret” substances to stay high during the party.
He is asking you for other suggestions to make the party more enjoyable .
