This document discusses developing a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) service and summarizes initial results from one hospital's LRP program. It recommends following consensus guidelines which include gaining support, addressing governance, and undergoing training including labs, demonstrations and mentorship. The initial results show acceptable positive margin and continence rates for the first 34 cases performed, with a 3.5% biochemical failure rate after a mean follow up of 12 months. Conversions occurred in 3 cases and complications included one rectal injury. The conclusions emphasize the importance of training, mentorship and audit for developing a successful LRP program.
