Nomination for 2014-2015 College of Technology Student Leadership Awards
It is my pleasure to nominate Andrew “Drew” Cronk for the 2014-2015 College of Technology
Student Leadership Award, Outstanding Undergraduate Leader. Drew is not only outstanding
academically, he is driven, has superb leadership skills, all of which he has demonstrated time
and time again.
I first became acquainted with Drew as a student in my MET 31300 course. He was driven, one
that always challenged himself to be the best he could be, and took the opportunity to explore
external opportunities with the desire to help others. I had the chance to get to know Drew better
through an opportunity he presented to me that he thought would provide the students an
opportunity to better apply those things learned in the MET 31300 course.
We spoke about the opportunity, which was a video and presentation he made to recruit students
to join a scheduled tour of the Lafayette Wastewater Treatment Plant. He wanted to encourage
the other students to explore the plant as an opportunity to see what they’ve been learning in
action. He also wanted to provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and provide
suggestions related to the course material. He saw this as an opportunity for students to give
back to the community by suggesting ways to make the plant more efficient. He presented a plan
and his thoughts regarding the best way to execute a visit of this type. We spoke at length
regarding opportunities, organization, and promotion of the event. He helped organize the visits,
produced an introductory video to prep the students before they went to the plant, and followed
through with media contacts to further promote the opportunities given to our students in
engineering technology.
The students were motivated to take advantage of the opportunity, contacted Drew when their
plans changed, and when needed he took charge and supported the direction we set with regard
to our interaction with the plant personnel. His manner was polished and alluded practice and
skill in a variety of leadership situations.
Getting to know Drew has been a pleasure as he is well spoken, intelligent, and handles himself
in a comfortable, manner that exudes leadership. Other students listen and follow his direction
often without question. Personally, I find his ability to master a situation unusual for an
undergraduate. When I asked for his resume for this nomination, I was pleasantly surprised that
others have the same feeling about Drew as me.
Drew’s most recent position with Butler America is a testament to his technical ability and his
mastery of material learned in his program. They have placed him in Airframe Design, which
requires modeling and reviews of items on government and military contracts. Prior to that, he
worked for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. While an intern there, he was asked to travel
internationally to facilitate meetings for his area of the company. Prior to these opportunities he
took the initiative to streamline records and design/implement a preventive maintenance
program, increased regional sales as Marketing Director for Chick-fil-A, and rescued victims as
a volunteer firefighter during the June 2008 flood in Indiana.
Nomination for 2014-2015 College of Technology Student Leadership Awards
His activities in school include a significant number of leadership positions in professional and
community organizations. This includes positions in ASME, SAE, EAA, the Alumni Board of
the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Thirst Project, Purdue Paintball, and other organizations at the
university and communities in which he has lived.
Drew is motivated and takes charge. These attributes support his drive to succeed, interacting
with CEOs and corporate senior management, and conversing with Mitch Daniels regarding the
future of Indiana’s environment. These opportunities inspire him to do more, become more
active, and to lead others to opportunities and things that will benefit them in the long run. This
drive, foresight, and the ability to lead will take him places as he moves through his career.
For all of the reasons stated, I believe that Andrew “Drew” Cronk should be chosen for the
Undergraduate Student Leadership Award.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Anne M. Lucietto, Ph.D.
