Cerebral
Cortex
Cerebral Cortex - The outermost layer of gray
matter making up the superficial aspect of the
cerebrum.
⮚ Microscopically the cortex consists of six
layers or laminae lying parallel to the
surface
⮚ From outside to inside the layers are:
I. Molecular layer
II. The external granular layer
III. Layer of pyramidal cell
IV. Internal granular layer
V. large pyramidal cell layer
VI. Layer of fusiform or polymorphic cells.
Cerebral Cortex
CEREBRAL
HEMISPHERE
Calcarine sulcus
• begins on the tentorial
surface little below the
splenium
• passes upwards
backwards to join
parieto-occipital sulcus.
• produces an elevation in
the medial wall of the
posterior horn called
calcar avis
Central sulcus (Fissure of Rolando)
• situated in the
superolateral
surface
• limiting sulcus
Functional areas of cerebrum
• Different areas of cerebral cortex perform
different functions
• The 52 functional areas are classified
according to BRODMANN in terms of
NUMBERS.
Brodmann areas were originally defined and
numbered by the German anatomist Korbinian
Brodmann based on the cytoarchitectural
organization of neurons he observed in the
cerebral cortex using the Nissl method of cell
staining
