Plants have developed various mechanisms to protect themselves from environmental stresses like drought, salinity and extreme temperatures. One such protective mechanism is accumulation of compatible solutes like proline, glycine betaine and trehalose which help in osmoregulation and stabilization of proteins and cell structures. Under stress conditions, plants regulate the biosynthesis and catabolism of these compatible solutes through various enzymes and genes to cope with the stress.
