Beginning as early as 1978, the
first Band was an aggregation of
Detroit, Caribbean andAfrican
Musicians called Matsimela.
The band which featured
Drummers King Sundiata Kieta
and KamaalAmen Ra debuted at
Wayne State University and
opened the show for some of
the notable reggae artists of
that time
3. The Makah Rhythm Tribe
Founded by Anoor Ra-Din
and Abdul “Scwe” Juttie
The band became very
popular in clubs and
universities around the
country
The band also promoted their
own shows at the old City
Club, Clutch Cargo’s and
St’Andrews Hall and other
venues.
First Detroit Reggae Band
to perform at the first African
World Festival in Detroit in
1983
Their first album Tranquility
was released in 1988
4. ON-XYZ
Around 1981, reunited with
Vocalist and drummer Kamaal
Amen Ra and guitarist Malik
Yakini in the Band ON-XYZ
One of the most popular Reggae
bands in Detroit, blending funk,
jazz fusion and rock, with the
reggae rhythms.
Established a long run at Alvin’s
Finer Diner in the early 1980’s.
Opened up for many top Reggae
acts, such as Dennis Brown,
Jimmy Cliff and others.
5. JO-NAB
In the Early 1990’s former
members of Makah Rhythm
Tribe formed a new group called
JO-NAB
Enjoyed popularity in the
suburban clubs and many
private parties.
Also performed extensively in
Windsor Canada.
Released their debut CD titled ‘
“BOUNCE” in 1992
