THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BORO — When it
comes down to it, hockey
players are known for be-
ing gritty, tough and ag-
gressive. Time and time
again you see their coach-
es yelling and screaming at
them to fuel the fire and
get the players to do what
needs to be done.
Many coaches believe
this is what it takes to cre-
ate the best possible player
and team. However, Point
Boro ice hockey coach
Alex DePalma has proven
coaching can be successful
with a much different ap-
proach.
DePalma knows that
while winning is enjoyable,
it is not what is most im-
portant in the grand
scheme of things. He em-
phasizes three basic ideas:
commitment, hard work
and discipline.
These ideas helped the
Panther hockey team to a
12-7-3 season in their first
year playing as a part of
the A Central Division, a
group filled with New Jer-
sey powerhouse hockey
teams. Point Boro finished
third in the division.
The team also secured
exciting overtime wins in
the opening round of both
the Shore Conference
Tournament and the state
tournament, something
DePalma was not too sure
would happen this year.
“We lost two very po-
tent offensive players so
we knew we were young
going into a tough Mon-
mouth division,” he said,
looking back on the sea-
son. “We knew we were
going to have to play well,
play strong and not back
down.”
The Panthers did just
that under his guidance
and achieved more than
he thought possible this
season both on and off the
ice.
Beyond the hockey rink,
DePalma goes back to in-
stilling commitment, hard
work and discipline into

POINT BEACH — When it comes
to being a great athlete, it is not
always based on stats or what
gets written in the scorebook
during the season. Sometimes it
has everything to do with the in-
tangibles such as being able to be
a leader, knowing the technical
aspect of a sport and being able
to keep a positive attitude in any
situation.
Point Beach senior Alexa Rus-
sell not only proved her worth in
the stat book but also displayed
leadership, intelligence and a
strong positive attitude in two
varsity sports during her senior
year as a Garnet Gull.
Russell participated in volley-
ball and softball and was a valu-
able member of both teams. She

THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BEACH — Something
that is not seen too often in
this day and age is the multi-
sport athlete. Many students
pick one sport and dedicate
their time and energy to im-
proving that one skill set,
hoping for more opportuni-
ties outside of the sport [like
college] in the years to come.
Other athletes love the feel of
competition and do whatever
they can to always be com-
peting.
Point Beach senior Mike
Frauenheim is the latter, even
working his way through a
collarbone injury to partici-
pate in three separate varsity
sports this year.
“I’d be bored with myself if
I didn’t do anything,” ex-
plained Frauenheim. “I just
love playing sports. I love the
competitiveness.”
Frauenheim had a stellar
senior year as he played foot-
ball in the fall, basketball in
the winter and baseball in the
spring. The Garnet Gull not
only participated in all of
these sports, but excelled in
every one.
In a testament to his talent
on the gridiron, court and
baseball diamond, he was
named The Ocean Star’s Ath-
lete of the Season for each
sport and has now been
named the male Athlete of
the Year.

THE OCEAN STAR
POINT PLEASANT — The 2015
Shore Conference All-Divi-
sion baseball teams were
named this week. Players are
collectively selected by the
Shore Conference coaches.
Point Beach has four play-
ers selected to the Class B
Central All-Division team.
Senior outfielder Mike
Frauenheim, junior infielder
Andrew Allegretta, junior
designated hitter John Van-
Schoick and freshman pitch-
er John Nista were all select-
ed to the team. Nista is the
only freshman to be named
to a Shore Conference All-
Division team this year.
Throughout the season he
was a consistent threat on
the mound for the Garnet
Gulls and looked like a sea-
son veteran every time he
stepped on the diamond.
Frauenheim was named The
Ocean Star’s Athlete of the
Season for offense, batting
.425 with seven doubles and a
triple. He also finished the
year with 31 hits, scored 21
times and added 17 RBIs.
Allegretta was another for-
midable threat from the bat-
ter’s box, averaging .525 with
a team-high on-base plus
slugging average of 1.151. He
scored 19 runs and was re-
sponsible for 17 RBIs.
VanSchoick was a strong
pitcher for Point Beach,
recording a shut out win
over St. Rose this year. He
also played other positions
throughout the season and
had some big time hits to
keep the Gulls in close
games.
Point Boro has two players
selected to the Class B South
All-Division team. Junior
catcher Sebastian Severio
and junior infielder Sam
Monaco were both named to
the team.
Severio was named The
Ocean Star’s Athlete of the
Season for defense, boasting
one of the strongest arms be-
hind the plate. He main-
tained a fielding percentage
of .959 and was also a strong
batter. He finished the year
with a team-high 18 RBIs, a
.348 batting average and 23
hits.
Monaco played shortstop
for the Panthers and was a
threat on defense and of-
fense. In the field he aver-
aged .882, had 73 assists and
47 putouts. From the plate he
averaged a team-high .371, ac-
cumulated 36 hits and had
nine RBIs. He also had 25
stolen bases and 28 runs
scored.

THE OCEAN STAR
Point Boro football will be
conducting its annual foot-
ball camp for anyone inter-
ested in attending in grades
two through nine.
The football camp will be
directed by Point Boro head
football coach Sean Henry
from July 6 to July 9.
Camp will take place at the
Point Boro JV field running
from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The
cost of the camp is $100.
There will be a $25 discount
for siblings.
The Panther football camp
is designed to improve a
child’s fundamentals and
teach them the different as-
pects of the game of football.
Each camper will receive a
free t-shirt and an opportuni-
ty to win daily and weekly
awards. Station and position
drills along with game situa-
tions leading to scrimmages
will improve a child’s abili-
ties.
The Point Boro High
School football staff has a
passion for the game of foot-
ball and their unilateral goal
is to make each child a better
player at the end of the week.

THE OCEAN STAR
POINT BORO — The Point
Boro American Legion base-
ball team battled the ele-
ments this week.
Rain, thunder and light-
ning suspended Monday’s
game against Brick and pre-
vented Tuesday’s game at
home against Lacey.
The players were on the
field doing their best to rake
away the puddles that had
formed, but the damage had
already been done.
Salvation came Wednesday
night, though, as the Panthers
were able to squeeze in a
game against Toms River
North on the road.
Point Boro held on to win
4-3 in an exciting game.
The Panthers had estab-
lished a 4-0 lead into the
sixth inning before Toms Riv-
er North mounted a three-
run comeback.
Point Boro stuck to their
defense and kept their oppo-
nent from tying or scoring
any more runs.
Sophomore Thomas Paul
pitched four and two-third
innings, picking up the win
for Boro. He struck out eight
batters.
Frank Graziano pitched
one and one-third innings,
finishing with two strikeouts.
Junior Tim Rossi closed
out the game from the rubber
and earned the save.
On offense junior Bill Fee-
han hit two doubles and an
RBI while Graziano added a
double and two RBIs.
Point Boro’s next game will
be Monday at home against
Donovan Catholic. The game
is scheduled to begin at 5:45
p.m.

“My philosophy has al-
ways been about being com-
mitted to everything you do.
In life, how you eat and how
you should conduct yourself
outside of the rink,” he ex-
plained. “Never talk about
winning. If you follow those
three basic ideas, winning
comes later. If I worry more
about the win more than the
message, then I feel I failed.”
He also emphasizes hard
work and discipline, saying,
“Be disciplined, work hard.
Talent without hard work is
wasted.”
These values that he
shares with his players has
had a profound effect on
them. Senior and captain of
the team this year Owen
Herrington appreciates
what DePalma has taught
him beyond hockey.
“Anything good you can
say about a person you can
say about coach Alex,” said
Herrington. “He’s made me
a lot better person and he’s
made me realize there’s a lot
more to life than just play-
ing hockey.”
Herrington went on to ex-
plain how DePalma and the
team’s involvement with the
Brick Stars Challenger Pro-
gram has really taught him
how lucky he is to get up
and step on the ice to play
hockey.
The Brick Stars Chal-
lenger Program was started
by DePalma in 2009 and is
an ice hockey program for
children and young adults
with developmental disabili-
ties. Coaching those players
has affected DePalma posi-
tively and he carries those
lessons over to the high
school team whenever he
can.
“In sports you’re always
looking for that next trophy
or championship, but these
kids are just happy to step
on the ice,” DePalma said.
“Sports can learn a lot from
these kids, especially at the
high school level.”
Back in 2012 DePalma re-
ceived the New Jersey He-
roes Foundation Award for
his work with the Brick
Stars program.
“They changed my life
and taught me to overcome
obstacles in life. No one
overcomes more than these
kids every day. They give
unconditional love,” he said.
Love is an important con-
cept to DePalma and some-
thing he tries to show his
teams.
“One of the most impor-
tant things that I always
make sure my teams know is
that I care about them,” he
stated. “For me, it’s that
four-letter word. You have
to let them know you love
them.”
According to him, when
that relationship is formed
between the players and
coach it is easier to be effec-
tive and communicate in a
positive way. His reach does
not stop with his players,
though. Parents and fans of
the team all appreciate De-
Palma and what he brings to
the program.
“Alex is the whole pack-
age. He teaches everything
that you want your kids to
learn from playing sports;
hard work, dedication, lead-
ership, sportsmanship, win-
ning, losing and respect,”
said Owen’s mother, Jean
Herrington. “I feel extreme-
ly grateful that several of my
kids have had the opportu-
nity to have Alex as a coach.
We need more coaches like
Alex.”
His coaching style is one
that is seldom seen these
days in sports, but it is a
productive one that fosters
and pushes the players to
not only be better hockey
players, but better people.
As Herrington graduates,
he hopes DePalma knows
how much his guidance
meant to him, saying, “I
would like to thank him for
everything he’s done for me.
He’s made me a better hock-
ey player and better person.
I just want to thank him be-
cause I owe a lot of success
to him. He taught me a lot
about what’s important in
life.”
DePalma was surprised
when he found out he was
selected as The Ocean Star’s
coach of the year, saying, “I
appreciate that. It’s a great
honor and very unexpect-
ed.”
DePalma is already look-
ing forward to next season
and hopes the Panther team
has another strong year with
his help. He also wanted to
leave the seniors with some
advice as they move on to
the next stage of their lives.
“Take with you a hard
work ethic,” he said. “You
can achieve anything you
want in life as long as you’re
willing to give more than
what’s expected of you.

honest.”

Point Beach head basketball
coach Nick Catania will be
holding a basketball camp for
children in second through
ninth grade.
Three clinics are available to
sign up for.
The first clinic is July 6-10,
the second clinic is July 13-17,
and the third clinic is August 3-
7. It cost $175 for one clinic, $325
for two clinics, and $425 for
three clinics.
All clinics are held at the
Point Pleasant Beach High
School gymnasium.
Each camp day runs from 9
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They include
stretching, ball handling skills,
shooting techniques, guest
speakers and, of course, games.
According to Catania, the
camp is designed to provide a
fun, challenging and educa-
tional basketball experience.
Instruction, competition and
games are designed to address
the age and maturity of each
camper.
Each player will be coached
throughout the week with a
staff dedicated to teaching bas-
ketball in an enthusiastic and
safe way.
Catania was the 2013 NJSI-
AA State Coach of the Year
and led Point Beach to their
first state and shore conference
championships in school histo-
ry. He has also led the team to
multiple division titles.

to credit himself for his suc-
cess even after all the work
he has put in throughout the
year.
“It’s definitely a testament
to my coaches and team-
mates. They really have been
great for me,” he said. “Hav-
ing the confidence in me to
perform — they have my
back and I have their back.
I’m not really trying to play
for myself, I’m trying to help
the team as much as possi-
ble.”
The senior played an inte-
gral role in each team he was
on starting back in the fall
with football.
“I love football. Just the
team working from the sum-
mer to the ultimate goal of
winning the state champi-
onship is fun and I love it,”
stated Frauenheim. “The
bond you make with the team
— that’s what you play for.”
He played running back
and finished the year with
five touchdowns, 75 carries
for 508 yards and four recep-
tions for 75 yards. Frauen-
heim also worked as a return
man on special teams finish-
ing with 12 punt returns for
321 yards and 17 kickoff re-
turns for 178 yards.
Unfortunately for Frauen-
heim, he injured his collar-
bone and missed the last two
games of the season, includ-
ing a shut out loss to Shore in
the first round of the Group I
playoffs.
“That was actually the
toughest game, sitting there
and watching my teammates
come off the field the last
game,” recalled Frauenheim.
“It kind of hit me that it’s
over now and you need to
move on to the next sport.”
He did just that, although
he had to wait for his collar-
bone to heal before he could
step out on the basketball
court.
According to Frauenheim,
his injury is not fully healed
but it was not hurting and the
doctor cleared him to play
basketball, something he was
jumping out of his shoes to
get back to.
“It was definitely some-
thing that was priority num-
ber one. I couldn’t practice so
just watching them practice
made me want to chomp at
the bit even more,” he ex-
plained.
Frauenheim helped the
Gulls to a quarterfinal ap-
pearance in the Shore Con-
ference Tournament [SCT]
and the chance at a Central
Jersey Group I sectional
championship.
He finished the year with
9.8 points per game, 2.6 re-
bounds per game, 2.5 steals
per game and 3.3 assists per
game.
“I think now Point Beach
has that program feel to it
where every year they’re go-
ing to be in those big games,”
said Frauenheim, looking
back on the season. “Every-
one thought this year was go-
ing to be a down year for us
and then we got that big win
against Lakewood letting
everyone know that Point
Beach is going to be around
every year.”
Frauenheim commends his
basketball coach Nick Cata-
nia and hopes the team finds
continued success after his
departure, saying, “Work
hard every day. Coach Nick
puts you in good opportuni-
ties and they definitely have
enough talent to win they
just have to put all the pieces
together and do it. That’s the
hardest thing.”
After basketball came to a
close Frauenheim laced up
his cleats and put on his base-
ball cap to close out his sen-
ior year out in left field for
the Point Beach baseball
team.
According to head coach
Angelo Fiore, last year
Frauenheim was an athletic
player but there were certain
situations that gave way to
needed improvement.
Frauenheim worked on what
needed to be worked on and
this year played a huge role
on both offense and defense
for the Gulls. His talent
earned him a spot on the
Ocean County All-Star team
and the Class B Central All-
Division team.
“This year I paid attention
to the little things. I listened
to the coaches all the time
and tried to always be listen-
ing,” explained Frauenheim.
“If he’s teaching someone
else, I’m listening to see what
he’s saying to him because it
could relate to what I have to
do as well. That’s what I
changed. I opened my ears a
little more and got a feel for
it.”
He boasted speed, vision
and a strong arm in the out-
field and was a stronger bat-
ter. He finished with a .425
batting average, seven dou-
bles and a triple on 31 hits, 17
RBIs and 21 runs scored.
The Garnet Gull team had
an impressive shut out win
over powerhouse St. Rose
and made appearances in the
SCT and state tournament.
Frauenheim’s hard work,
determination and love of
competition has paid off and
next year he will be attending
York College in Pennsylvania
to play basketball and study
sports management with the
hopes of being a coach some
day.
His recruiting for football
slowed down when he sus-
tained the collarbone injury
but basketball teams started
looking at him. York College
was a school that stayed with
him despite the injury and
Frauenheim says he likes the
coaches, feels comfortable
going there and is excited to
play basketball for them.
He also said that Fiore is
pushing him to go out for
baseball once he is there, so
that is something he will be
thinking about — especially
since it will be hard to go
from playing three sports to
only just one.
Frauenheim is proud of all
he accomplished his senior
year and looks ahead to what
next year brings, but knows
there will be a lot to be
missed about Point Beach
athletics.
“Definitely the teammates
and all the stuff we do as a
team. You can’t get that stuff
back,” Frauenheim said. “Like
the bus rides and being with
friends — I’m definitely go-
ing to miss that a lot.”
