Celebrate Chesterfield
There’s been quite a lot of work done to drive people to visit the town and we’re starting to reach wider audiences
Christmas campaign targeting 50k homes in N Derbyshire and South Yorkshire and a further 50k email addresses across the country. Also - independent retailers in the town centre creating their own campaign.
Elton John at Proact Stadium – 15k crowd. The Club is working hard to attract future big name concerts at the Stadium.
All of the above has contributed to some positive outcomes:
Growth in popularity as a place to visit with a 9% increase in visitor numbers with over 3m day visits and 320k spent overnight stays
This is reflected in amount of money spent by tourists – increase of 11% since 2010, estimated £142m – way above the 2% increase in East Midlands region
Coach station winning award from Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT), with its prestigious ‘Coach Friendly’ status. First town in East Midlands to win the award.
Casa Hotel – Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice 2013 4th Best Hotel in the UK and 21st Best Hotel in Europe

Inspired Investment
Regarding the regeneration in the town, there are still a number of major projects that are being worked on. Some of these are taking longer than we hoped and this is a reflection of the still tough, economic environment we are in and certainly not down to any lack of commitment or enthusiasm to see these come to fruition.
Mention:Riding high on retail front – third best of the largest centres in the country with just 8.7% of shops being empty – opening of TK Max, Debenhams and The Range

Northern Gateway announced with Wilson Bowden as development partner estimated £50 million project – high quality shopping and leisure area, mix of commercial space, homes and car parking. Est 1k jobs.
Need to know how much Pete will say on this but probably needs you to mention anyway:
Chesterfield Waterside: The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise
Partnership (LEP) Board approved £2.4m funding from its Growing Places Fund for the Chesterfield
Saltergate Housing scheme and Sheffield Road – these are now being developed and understand demand is high for provisional sales.
Markham Vale – perhaps mention HS2. Secured Enterprise Zone Status in April 2012. Businesses operating from Markham Vale will be entitled to Enhanced Capital Allowances – offering tax relief for major investment in plant and machinery. Car parts distributor, Andrew Page, built and moved into its new national distribution centre creating 120 jobs. Further infrastructure works on key roadways and public art schemes continue on site with further investments on their way.
Staveley Works Corridor: to cover all the old chemical sites – hotel, food and retail area, housing.
Steve Smith – Destination Chesterfield and the Chesterfield Champions is about the success celebrating the success of the business community and we would like to invite two of our growing companies to the stage to talk about their business. Firstly Shorts Accountants to talk about their commitment to the town and their investment in new head office facilities in the town during 2012 and secondly Avoca, looking forward to the future and their plans for the regional growth funding they have secured.
Firstly I would like to welcome to the stage Chris Chambers of Shorts Accountants

Closing comments:
Promoting all of the above is obviously a key element to how successful we are in attracting that much needed inward investment. I know Dom is very active in using social media and the website to promote what’s going on in the town and the successes of our businesses and local communities and this must continue. We get some excellent coverage in the local media for the work of our Champions and I’d urge all of you to use this medium to promote, not just your business, but also what you see as the strengths of being based in Chesterfield.
On the back of the Destination Chesterfield project and our Chesterfield Champions scheme we’ve seen more networking groups being established and one in particular – the Manufacturing and Engineering Forum, set up by James Brand at United Cast Bar – is very welcome and we would like to encourage more involvement from this sector in our Champions scheme as manufacturing is often the base at what drives the skills and economic prosperity of a town.
So please keep us informed of your successes so we can promote these to a wider audience – it all helps to strengthen our position and achieve the aspirations we have for the town.
Steve Smith – Anecdote about involvement in Destination Chesterfield and difference it has made – Introduce Dom Stevens – Destination Chesterfield to talk through the planned activity through to 2015.

I am pleased to be able to announce Destination Chesterfield’s new delivery plan through to December 2015. This is possible due to the securing further funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the continued support of Chesterfield Borough Council and the ongoing financial support from the local business community that are Chesterfield Champions.
The Chesterfield Champions Scheme can be sometime be met with cynicism that it is just a networking club, this is far from the truth and much of the marketing initiatives that we launch today wouldn’t happen without the local businesses and organisations funding and in-kind support. The Champions is open to any businesses that is based in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire and has an interest in contributing and influencing the marketing of Chesterfield and working together to grow the local economy. All the champions have “ “ badges on today, don’t take my word for it talk to them about our joint work and what we have achieved so far. The more businesses that become involved the wider the impact Destination Chesterfield’s marketing campaigns can have.
We recognised that although the Town Centre is successful compared to other towns, we needed to plan for the future development and the inevitable changes in the High Street. This is why we applied for the Portas Pilot Project in 2012 With the support of Champions, Toby Perkins and Chesterfield Borough Council we secured a grant of £10,000 as a town team partner for a town/district centre support package and matched this with funding from the Champions and our core budget to deliver Incubation Street,
This campaign will support existing business to develop, promotes the our town and district centre to both local and external target markets and celebrate the success of both our independent and national retailers.
This will all cumulate in a new Chesterfield Retail Awards to celebrate our shops and their staff.
Activity includes a new Chesterfield Local Campaign to support traders and give local residents reasons to spend their money in our town, this isn’t just about the daytime economy but also our evening economy. This will be developed with the Town Centre Forum and other traders for a Summer launch.
Our successful Christmas and Summer in Chesterfield Campaigns will continue and expand attracting people to and changing perceptions of Chesterfield along the way. Both the 2011 and 2012 Christmas Campaigns generated an estimated £500,000 in to the local economy.
We will also launch a scheme to identify where value can be added to existing businesses to help them develop during these tough times from this we will develop mentoring and training based on the requirements of the businesses.
We want to see new businesses to continue to take our empty town and regional centre units and will develop a one stop shop promoting the latest training, funding and mentoring opportunities for start ups and growing businesses.
Through the town team funding we will also support Chesterfield Borough Council’s review of the layout and environment of Chesterfield Market, the aim of this expenditure is to create more viable stalls for potential start up businesses.
Sitting alongside our new Retail Awards we will launch the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards, celebrating both local produce and our restaurants.
We will raise the profile of the Manufacturing and engineering sector within Chesterfield and ensuring they are aware funding and training opportunities to support them to grow. We have already launched the Chesterfield Manufacturing and Engineering forum who will shape this activity and the next event will be a trip to the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Rotherham on the 2nd May followed by another event on the opportunities from City Deal for Manufacturers.
The Made in Chesterfield Campaign will engage with local schools and colleges to promote careers in and the importance of the sector in Chesterfield, this will cumulate with a new Made in Chesterfield Festival to be launched in 2014.
Finally but not least we have Invest in Chesterfield, in partnership with the economic Development team at Chesterfield Borough Council. The first two years of the project have been focussed on co-ordinating activity and having a consistent approach to promoting the town locally and regionally and building the relationship with our regional and national partners including both the local enterprise partnerships, Derbyshire Economic Partnership and UKTI.
Examples of this include a presence on the D2N2LEP stand at MIPIM via our colleagues at Derbyshire Economic Partnership or Sheffield City Region attending manufacturing and medical conferences across the word and we will continue to work with these partners and make sure we our maximising opportunities for Chesterfield.
The first two years have been a success, we have grown a support network of 120 champions working together to promote the town, over 100 ambassadors on the front line, improvements to key gateways in to the town, delivered marketing campaigns that have boosted footfall and spend in the town and investment enquiries and jobs created continue to grow.
However it doesn’t stop their the campaigns in the new plan, look to attract further investment, support businesses to grow, grow footfall and spend and continue to give the businesses and organisations a voice in the promotion of Chesterfield. We have a great town, a passionate community and an opportunity during these tough times to work together to make a difference.
Thank you for you time, on the tables there is an envelope for everyone, this includes a summery of the plan and a story book that reviews the success of the town and Destination Chesterfield in 2012.
Steve Smith – Thanks Dom So, we have much to celebrate and as much to look forward to over the coming months and years. I'm sure many of you have some burning questions to ask about our plans or you may just want to share your views. We will now move to our question and answer session and I'd like to welcome Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, Toby Perkins MP for Chesterfield, George Cowcher, Chief Executive at Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber and Trevor Clay, Chief Executive at Chesterfield College to take your questions.
Please raise your hand and I will direct Tara to come over with the microphone and it would be helpful if you could give your name and organisation name before asking your question.
Steve Smith –(we will get a couple set up in the audience in case no first questions) Keep to subject and move on when required. Need to close at 9.55 as Toby Perkins needs to leave at 10
9.30 – 9.55 Chesterfield Question Time (Panel – Toby Perkins MP, Cllr John Burrows, Peter Swallow, Trevor Clay, George Cowcher)
Steve Smith – Thank the panel and invite Cllr John Burrows Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield and leader of Chesterfield Borough Council to bring the morning to a close.
For those of you who attended the Celebrate Chesterfield event in 2011 you may remember we had a similar story to tell. It was, and continues to be tough out there. We have the imminent closure of the co-op and job loses at CPP and the slow growth in new developments.
We’ve always wanted to see the Destination Chesterfield project grow and have a security so that it can continue for years to come. We know the vision we have and aspirations we hold to see Chesterfield as a modern, contemporary destination will take time. We have some of that security now through the funding and from our extensive Champion’s membership. All I would like you to do is to continue with your support; keep feeding back with your views and keep promoting our town to your customers, suppliers, employees and visitors. As a Council we're committed to seeing all of our plans come to fruition and the more you can do to galvanise the investment and buoyancy of our local economy then the greater success we can all enjoy. Thank you.
This isn't just isolated to our town - it's across the UK. The difference in our town is that we're still attracting new retailers - tkmax, debenhams, the range - all big stores that have opened since our last celebrate chesterfield event.
We've increased our membership numbers in our Champions’ scheme. We've secured funding for the Destination Chesterfield project. And as you've just heard from Huw and Dom we have planned developments and activities that all aim to raise our profile and encourage investment into the town.
