Editor's Notes
Thesis: Whereas Prince and Jackson are different in the aspect that Prince played more instruments on stage and was known for his guitar abilities, while Michael Jackson was known for his dynamic dance moves, both were African american descent and both had similar father issues that later affected them
Both artists came from the south and were born in 1958. Just a few months apart. This was pretty close after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and a little before JFK was elected and Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I have a dream,” speech. Both of the generations that Prince and MJ had come from had also been removed from slavery. This made them migrate north (Vogel).
The discipline that their fathers had stemmed from the hard times that they faced during their lifetimes. They had to work hard to support their families and didn’t want their children to go through what they had to go through. They wanted their sons to make something of themselves. Both fathers failed to make their bands a success which then made them push harder to turn their sons into stars. This is where the neglect, rejection and abuse came in because making them stars was all they seemed to care about (Vogel).
Michael Jackson and Prince become obsessed in their crafts. Partially to earn the love of their fathers but it was programed in their brain that they had to be the best at their craft. They had to constantly do better and better (Vogel). Prince and Michael Jackson both reached a level of fame that some can only dream about but after awhile that can take a toll on someone. Later on both artists get ridiculed for bizarre behavior and make headlines in negative ways.MIchael Jackson ends up dangling his baby over a balcony and also gets in trouble with the law for pedephilness. Prince had his own battled with streaming digital music and battles with record labels (Black).
Although Michael Jackson didn’t debut his solo career until his early 80s, he starred in a band with his siblings called the Jackson 5. When Joe Jackson realized that his band wasn’t going to take off he pushed his children to stardom and created The Jackson 5. Jackson started at a young age which caused him to miss his entire childhood. His dad caused him to feel neglect, abuse and rejection. His role models were his older brothers that did things such as party and go off with groupies. At this young age this caused Jackson to be a loner and become sexually confused (Rosen).
Jackson hit his peak and began slowly declining the older that he got and the later in his career. He was looked at as a creepy man child and people began to have issues with that. Not having a childhood was said to be the reason why Jackson became so fascinated and obsessed with fantasies and fairytales. His ranch was called neverland ranch (Harrington).
One major difference between the two was their style of composing and writing their music. Prince played his music live while Jackson liked to use his voice as an instrument and did not play instruments live (Patriarch). Prince was more focused on doing what he wanted and experiment. Jackson was very much a perfectionist and lived for the results. While Jackson was the shy guy and seemed like the quiet man child Prince was very open about his secual desires (Harrington).
