Glimpses of my Hometown!

Relocation Conference, May 6–8, 2015
“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Truth is, what happens in Las Vegas can be
told to the world, without shame or cover-up, because this vibrant city has so much
more going for it. Its bold, contemporary flair dazzles the eye…and your spirit will
soar as high as the majestic Bellagio fountains when you experience all that Vegas
has to offer.
ENTERTAINMENT
Las Vegas is like one huge concert venue for the biggest names in showbiz. No
matter your tastes, you’ll find a show that suits your style. Mariah Carey opens her
headliner at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on May 6. If you’ve never seen Cirque
du Soleil in person, the one show to see is “Michael Jackson One” at Mandalay Bay.
Then again, you can catch Cirque du Soleil’s worldwide phenomenon, “Zarkana,” at
ARIA Resort & Casino, or plunge into the hilarious world of the racy, adults-only,
definitely R-rated, “Absinthe” at Caesars Palace, where the theater design actually
drops you right into the middle of the circus action.
Also, don't forget to check out the world's largest observation wheel, the High
Roller, offering unparalleled views of the downtown area, day and night, and ask for
bottle service. Make use of the Strip's monorail and trams too so you can whiz up
and down the entertainment corridor.
CULTURE & PERFORMING ARTS
Something about Las Vegas inspires visions. In 1998, Steve Wynn had the
inspiration to put a fine art museum in his Bellagio hotel and casino. Today, the
entire Bellagio complex is a piece of art in itself, with its famous fountains, works by
Pablo Picasso adorning the walls of the ultra haute cuisine Picasso restaurant, and a
lobby ceiling of 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers (a work of the brilliant glass artist
Dale Chihuly). The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s current exhibit, “Fabergé Revealed”
offers a rare glimpse into the extravagance of the last, doomed Russian czars
through the intricate craftsmanship of the House of Fabergé. The Conservatory will
host its Spring Exhibit in May. The Bellagio is just one of many of the world's
premier casinos and resorts you'll find on the Strip.
Artistic Ambiance aptly describes The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, a five
acre world-class campus at the heart of downtown’s Symphony Park development
offering an array of beautiful indoor (3 theatres) and outdoor spaces for enjoying
the arts and hosting private events. The Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet
Theatre perform there along with Broadway, music theatre, jazz, dance, and other
venues. Symphony Park redefines Las Vegas as a city that values culture and the
artisan urban lifestyle and, most importantly, its children. The Discovery Children’s
Museum relocated adjacent to the Smith Center in March of 2013. The 58,000
square-feet Discovery building is home to nine-themed exhibition halls totaling
26,000 square-feet of interactive hands on core exhibits. The Featured Exhibitions
Gallery is large enough to accommodate major exhibits rom the nation’s leading
museums.
Symphony Park is also home to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain He
alth. Keep Memory Alive, is committed to improving the lives of patients and their
families as they navigate the extraordinary challenges of brain disorders. The Center
treats patients with Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease, as well as
frontotemporal dementia and multiplescierosis. The treatment programs are
designed to provide excellent care and to respect the dignity of patients and their
families. Research helps to advance Cleveland Clinic’s clinical trials and offers hope
for improving brain health.
WINING
Las Vegas is home to 17 master sommeliers, more than any city in the U.S. You’ll
need the sommelier at Alizé at the Palms to help you navigate the 55-page wine list.
For your viewing pleasure while dining at Aureole Mandalay Bay, trained aerialists
and acrobats fetch your wine bottle by scaling a Mission: Impossible–themed tower.
Maybe they’ll add an extra flip if you order the $42,000 bottle of 1900 Petrus
Bordeaux.
DINING
It’s not just the singers and magicians who are celebrities in Las Vegas. Famous
chefs are now serving up their delectable cuisine in the city’s booming restaurant
scene. Bon Appétit magazine has declared Las Vegas one of its top five culinary
cities, and among the town’s 5,000 eateries are Michelin-rated and AAA Five
Diamond restaurants. Delicacies from all cultures are found right here!
SHOPPING VENUES
Las Vegas retail options have evolved into new realms of sophistication. Our resort
shops are on par with New York, Paris or Milan. Residents enjoy Downtown
Summerlin, Green Valley District, Town Square and the Fashion Show Mall.
OUTDOORS, RECREATION, & ADVENTURE
Recreational opportunities abound in Southern Nevada. Prior to or after the
conference, stretch your legs and refresh your soul in the region’s spectacular desert
scenery or get involved in any number of our outdoor activities.
You'll find world class championship golf courses in the greater Las Vegas Metro-
plex. One can choose from over 50 picturesque neighborhood and community
courses or more upscale private golf venues. Bear’s Best, a unique course made up
of 18 holes hand selected by Jack Nicklaus from his 270 designs worldwide, open to
the public, is located in our premier and award-winning 22,500-acre master-planned
community, Summerlin, as well as the two Tournament Players Club Courses you
have viewed on TV. Compare us to Palm Springs…Las Vegas has so much more to
offer!
Hike or rock climb the magnificent Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston, located
40 miles northwest of Las Vegas, with 52 miles of hiking trails, 160 picnic areas and
150 campsites in seven campgrounds and RV parks. Snow skiing at Lee Canyon in
season.
Did you know the towering Hoover Dam, open for tours, is only 35 miles away?
Hoover Dam created Lake Mead, North America’s largest man-made lake, a water
wonder world for boating, water skiing, para sailing, swimming, fishing and
camping.
If you feel the need for speed, you’re in the right place too! Take five laps in a Ferrari
at Dream Racing Driving Experience, or unleash your inner NASCAR daredevil at the
Richard Petty Driving Experience.
Soar into the wild blue yonder with a real combat pilot executing loops, spins, and
stalls at Sky Combat Ace.
MASTER-PLANNED COMMUNITIES
For those who cherish the rich suburban lifestyle, we have various master-planned
communities that can be found in the valley Metroplex, Las Vegas, Henderson and
North Las Vegas…these family-friendly neighborhoods have community centers
offering a wide array of classes and learning opportunities. Playgrounds, expansive
parks, walking and jogging trails, bike paths, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts,
softball and soccer fields, swimming pools and more amenities abound.
YOUTH SPORTS
So many, many venues and opportunities! Soccer, Lacrosse, and Golf are very
popular. The largest single event, the LVSA Youth Soccer Club Tournament (U9
through U18) draws 700 teams from USA & Canada alone.
WORSHIP
Southern Nevada is home to houses of worship representing over sixty faiths, last
count there are 600 plus churches, temples, and synagogues throughout the valley.
Private schools in Clark County (PK – 12) are 53% religiously affiliated.
EDUCATION
Within Las Vegas, Summerlin is home to more than two-dozen schools, including ten
nationally-recognized private schools and twelve excellent public schools. Several
colleges and specialized higher education facilities are also located in the
community, including Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. The community’s
many educational amenities have a well-established track record of academic
accomplishments, athletic victories and cultural accolades. The Clark County School
District has announced that Palo Verde High School will be offering International
Baccalaureate (IB) programs for the 2015-16 school-year. This highly acclaimed
program focuses on inquiry-based learning that embodies a hands-on, worldly
education that includes a demanding and rewarding curriculum, foreign language
study and a real-world capstone project. West Career and Technical Academy is a
magnet high school operated by CCSD to which students may apply. It provides a
college and career preparatory education by offering students the opportunity to
select from one of nine program areas and is the first Google pilot school in the
district.
It was announced March 9, 2015, that the 17 CCSD Magnet Schools in the Valley
have received prestigious merit awards from Magnet Schools of America. MSA
recognizes schools that display a commitment to academic standards, curriculum,
innovation, diversity efforts, specialized teaching, parent engagement and
community involvement.
The Las Vegas Clark County Library District with branches valley-wide maintains 2
million plus items for check-out and offers exceptional youth programs.
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Since its first classes were held on campus in 1957 UNLV has transformed itself into
a thriving urban research institution and has become an indispensable resource in
one of the country’s fastest-growing and most enterprising cities. In addition, if one
excels in an intercollegiate sport, you’ll find UNLV has the coaching, facilities, and
traditions associated with Division I college athletics. Explore the unlv.edu site.
