What is robotic process automation?
Robotic process automation (RPA) is a software technology that makes it
easy to build, deploy, and manage software robots that emulate human's
actions interacting with digital systems and software.
Just like people, software robots can do things like understand what’s on a
screen, complete the right keystroke, navigate systems, identify and extract
data, and perform a wide range of defined actions. But software robots can
do it faster and more consistently than people, without the need to get up
and stretch or take a coffee break.
In simple words RPA is a term used for software tools that partially or fully
automate human activities that are manual, rule-based, and repetitive.
They work by replicating the actions of an actual human interacting with one
or more software applications to perform tasks such as data entry, process
standard transactions, or respond to simple customer service queries.

Today, RPA is driving new efficiencies and freeing people from repetitive tedium
across a broad swath of industries and processes. Enterprises in industries
ranging from financial services to healthcare to manufacturing to the public sector
to retail and far beyond have implemented RPA in areas as diverse as finance,
compliance, legal, customer service, operations, and IT. And that’s just for
starters.
RPA has become so widespread because it is broadly applicable. Virtually any
high-volume, business-rules-driven, repeatable process is a great candidate for
automation—and increasingly so are cognitive processes that require higher-
order AI skills.
Where can RPA be used?
Finance HR Services IT Services Client Services
Retail Operations Supply Chain
12. 12
Why is RPA the fastest-growing enterprise
software in the world?
Rapid, significant return on
investment (ROI)
Minimal upfront investment No disruption to underlying
systems
Low-code build
environment
Scalable and enterprise-
ready

RPA is not AI; AI is not RPA. But the combination of RPA and AI unlocks massive new possibilities
for enterprises everywhere. For one thing, RPA technology now makes it possible to insert
advanced AI skills in the form of machine learning models, natural language processing (NLP),
character and image recognition, and more into RPA robots. Giving robots these AI skills
dramatically expands their ability to handle cognitive processes that require things like:
• Understanding documents including semi-structured or unstructured data
• Visualizing screens (including virtual desktops)
• Comprehending speech and carrying on conversations and chats
Is RPA the same as artificial intelligence (AI)?
16. 16
Document Understanding process flow
Intelligent document processing is not just
about accelerating operational efficiency.
It’s also about improving accuracy, customer
experience, compliance, and employee
satisfaction. It’s about making your
organization successful and contributing to
your company’s growth.
17. 17
Types of documents and their processing
Structured – repetitive forms and documents with
a structured template that can contain handwritten
text, signatures, checkboxes (different forms,
passports, licenses, time sheets)
Semi-structured – documents containing
fixed and variable parts like tables (invoices,
receipts, purchase orders, medical bills,
bank statements, utility bills)
Unstructured – documents with no fixed format
(various contracts, agreements, emails,
disease descriptions, drug prescriptions, news,
voice scripts)
- Rule-based / template-
based approach
- Processes data fixed in
format
- Model-based approach
- Extracts same info from
each document
- Model-based approach
- Needs to “read” the text to
extract the meaning and
identify required info

forget about progress and prosperity for our
