1. REGINA MARIA
Born into the British royal family,
she was titled Princess Mary of
Edinburgh at birth.As queen, she
was very popular, both in Romania
and abroad.
In 1896, Ferdinand and Mary moved
to Cotroceni Palace, which had been
extended by the Romanian architect
Grigore Cerchez.
In 1926, Mary and two of her
children undertook a diplomatic
tour of the United States. The first years of Mary and Ferdinand's marriage were not
particularly easy, and Mary would later tell her husband that "it is
such a shame that we had to waste so many years of our youth just
to learn how to live together!" After the end of her visit in England,
Mary returned to Paris, where the people were just as excited for
her arrival as they had been a few weeks before.
Mary died on 18 July 1938.Two days later, on 20 July, Mary's body
was brought to Bucharest, where she lay in state in the white
drawing room at Cotroceni Palace.
