Design impacts all our lives in ways subtle and overt. From our phones to
our coffee pots, every object is a function of design.Great design is more than
just good aesthetics. It is the way we use objects. An iPad or an Eames chair
are beautiful by themselves, but you can’t truly appreciate their design until
you start using them. It’s only then that you experience all the subtle
touches, all the things visible and invisible that make great design.
Philosophy of design is the study of assumptions, foundations, and
implications of design. The field is defined by an interest in a set of problems,
or an interest in central or foundational concerns in design. In addition to
these central problems for design as a whole, many philosophers of design
consider these problems as they apply to particular disciplines (e.g.
philosophy of art). Although most practitioners are philosophers, several
prominent designers and artists have contributed to the field. Graphic
design has seen many changes and influences. But foundations remain the
same. Society heavily pressures graphic design to assimilate to the era. The
history or foundation for graphic design has influence from what was
depicted to the author during that time. The foundation of letters, that can

The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to
create a work of art. The elements of design can be thought of as the
things that make up a painting, drawing, design etc. Good or bad - all
paintings will contain most of if not all, the seven elements of design.
A commonly used list of the main elements include form, shape, line,
color, value, space and texture.

SCREEN PRINTING
Screen printing is a printing
technique whereby a mesh is used
to transfer ink onto a substrate,
except in areas made impermeable
to the ink by a blocking stencil. A
blade or squeegee is moved across
the screen to fill the open mesh
apertures with ink, and a reverse
stroke then causes the screen to
touch the substrate momentarily
along a line of contact. This causes
the ink to wet the substrate and be
pulled out of the mesh apertures as
the screen springs back after the
blade has passed.

PRINT DESIGN

Print design, is a form of visual communication used to convey
information to an audience through intentional aesthetic design
printed on a tangible surface, designed to be printed on paper, as
opposed to presented on a digital platform. A design can be considered
print design if its final form was created through an imprint made by
the impact of a stamp, seal, or dye on the surface of the paper.

DRAWING
FLORAMOTIFDESIGN PRINT
Drawing is a form of visual art in which a person uses various drawing
instruments to mark paper or another two-dimensional medium. Instruments
include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons,
charcoal, chalk, pastels, various kinds of erasers, markers, styluses, various
metals and electronic drawing.
A drawing instrument releases small amount of material onto a surface,
leaving a visible mark. The most common support for drawing is paper,
although other materials, such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, and
board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or
whiteboard or indeed almost anything. The medium has been a popular and
fundamental means of public expression throughout human history. It is one of
the simplest and most efficient means of communicating visual ideas. The wide
availability of drawing instruments makes drawing one of the most common
artistic activities.

In addition to its more artistic forms, drawing is frequently used in commercial
illustration, animation, architecture, engineering and technical drawing. A
quick, freehand drawing, usually not intended as a finished work, is sometimes
called a sketch. An artist who practices or works in technical drawing may be
called a drafter, draftsman or a draughtsman.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION
FLORAMOTIFDESIGN PRINT
Fashion Illustration is the communication of fashion that originates with
illustration, drawing and painting. It is usually commissioned for reproduction
in fashion magazines as one part of an editorial feature or for the purpose of
advertising and promoting fashion makers, fashion boutiques and department
stores
Fashion illustration has been around for nearly 500 years. Ever since clothes
have been in existence, and there has been a need to translate an idea or image
into a fashion illustration. Not only do fashion illustrations show a
representation or design of a garment but they also serve as a form of art.
Fashion illustration shows the presence of hand and is said to be a visual
luxury. More recently, there has been a decline of fashion illustration in the late
1930s when Vogue began to replace its celebrated illustrated covers with
photographic images. This was a major turning point in the fashion industry.
Laird Borrelli, author of Fashion Illustration Now states,
Fashion Illustration has gone from being one of the sole means of fashion
communication to having a very minor role. The first photographic cover of
Vogue was a watershed in the history of fashion illustration and a watershed
mark of its decline. Photographs, no matter how altered or retouched, will
always have some association with reality and by association truth. I like to
think of them [fashion Illustrations] as prose poems and having more fictional
narratives. They are more obviously filtered through an individual vision than
photos. Illustration lives on, but in the position of a poor relative to the fashion.

Graphics are visual images or designs on some surface, such as a wall, canvas,
screen, paper, or stone to inform, illustrate, or entertain. In contemporary
usage it includes: pictorial representation of data, as in computer-aided design
and manufacture, in typesetting and the graphic arts, and in educational and
recreational software. Images that are generated by a computer are called
computer graphics.
Examples are photographs, drawings, Line art, graphs, diagrams, typography,
numbers, symbols, geometric designs, maps, engineering drawings, or other
images. Graphics often combine text, illustration, and color. Graphic design
may consist of the deliberate selection, creation, or arrangement of typography
alone, as in a brochure, flyer, poster, web site, or book without any other
element. Clarity or effective communication may be the objective, association
with other cultural elements may be sought, or merely, the creation of a
distinctive style.
Graphics can be functional or artistic. The latter can be a recorded version, such
as a photograph, or an interpretation by a scientist to highlight essential
features, or an artist, in which case the distinction with imaginary graphics
may become blurred.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING
13/01
Visual merchandising is a purely aesthetic science, and it is the backbone
of the retail industry. Visual merchandising plays an important role in the
retail industry. However, the merchandise hardly sells in retails where
identical merchandise is flooded in the market. Visual merchandising is a
silent selling technique that helps to reduce the employee mix and increase
per square feet returns and can further help in reducing marketing
budgets. Visual merchandising of developing the floor plans and three-
dimensional displays in order to maximize sales. Both goods and services
can be displayed to highlight their features and benefits. The purpose of
such visual merchandising is to attract, engage, and motivate the
customer towards making a purchase.Visual merchandising commonly
occurs in retail spaces such as retail stores and trade shows.
Visual merchandising contributes to a brand's personality and the
characteristics associated with the brand. The design of the store should
reflect this as part of their retail brand strategy. This includes the in-store
environment and brand communications used such as signage and images
displayed in-store.These visual elements all play a part in building a retail
brand and therefore they help a brand differentiate itself from its
competitors, create brand loyalty, and allows for a brand to place
premium pricing on their products.Part of the brand strategy used in
visual merchandising is research into the brand's target market to find out
what their customers’ values and self-images are. This information can
allow the retailer to cater the design of a store and their advertising to
match their consumers.
