Snow Globes
1. - 1 -
Snow Globes are the perfect gifts for a dreamer.
They can be made year round and still add to the decor and be fun and
children love them.
They can be themed for any occasion.
They are cheap to make and you can use a multitude of embellishments
and fillers.
Water based snow globes.

Using PVC for snow, someone said when you use PVC it has a smell that she feared might mean it
was hazardous so I wouldn't use this option for snow but the rest of the tutorial is fine.

Toy globe/water based you can also use a toy and a picture combination.

Tips
1. Use baby oil instead of cooking oil if you are not going for the antiquing effect with a black and
white photograph.
The good thing is it's clear.
2.For the snow you can use glass beads and there is glass glitter which works better than regular
glitter which can clump.Rhinestones and sequins are good options.
3.The Water Approach - Water has its advantages but if you use water the image must be laminated.
To laminate the image easily self adhesive shelf liner or heavy duty packaging tape are alternatives.
The two neatest benefits of using water is you can tint the water with a very short drop of food
coloring. The other thing is its free and you don't need to buy oil. You can use a few drops of glycerin
to the water to help your choice for snow to move more smoothly.

Nice oil based idea for 4x6 images.

Image sizing
Personally I am going to use some standard sized business cards that I am ordering with my preferred
images. I am going to laminate them. Not sure if you can order them laminated which would be even
better.
I will use them with the 4 oz baby food jar and I bet if the don't fully wrap around they will part the
way and the sides should touch the inside of the jar so I can place it in back from the glass of the jar
of water and get the magnified effect.
I will use a quart size jar for the 4x6 pictures.
Some people tape the image to the back inside the jar for another look.

In this tutorial the lady uses pictures that measured 1.5 inches high by 5.75 inches wide. If you use a
computer to print your pictures out you could size these on a program. They wrap around the inside
of the full jar. This size is probably best for the Gerber stage one 2.5 oz jars not sure.
This one is a good one to go by.

4oz baby food jar, 2"X2.5" is a perfect picture size. We chose 2 pictures and glued them back to back.
Suggestion from online for using 4oz jars.
1.I made these for my grandson’s First Birthday party. I used the larger baby food jars and regular
size pictures. (3 1/2 x 5) I had to cut them down to fit, but most of the pics had excess stuff on them
anyways. I decided to do a globe for each month leading up to a year. The party is in 2 weeks, I am
excited to see these as centerpieces!
Suggestion for using 2.5 oz jars
2. You can make a “photo strip” using almost any word processing program, photo paper and your
home printer. Decide what size you need the photos to be; then insert them side by side into a blank
document. Click on the photo corner and make it the required size by dragging. (I suggest using a
diagonal drag to retain proportions.) Once you have them lined up, just insert your photo paper &

print.
Where to get the Photos? You can print pictures that size by using the instant print photo machines at
Target or Walmart. Just choose “collage” then “mimi-prints” . Your next choice will be how many
photos you want on a 5×7 sheet. For this project 4 should work. You can pick how you want the
photos arranged so be sure to place your happy and sad faces next to each other. If your doing just
one child you’ll end up with 2 extra photos. I’m a pre-school teacher and use these small photos for
everything from cubby tags to job helpers to personalized projects. Hope this helps!
Hope this helps
Tip - Nail Polish can be used to paint the lids.
Covering the lid in foil could be cute.
Tip -
The more the picture is away from the glass the more it looks magnified. If that is the look you want
then you want to to tape your picture in a roll by taping inside the roll to hide the tape.
If its in the center of the jar you will need to glue the top of your picture roll to the inside of the lid.
When the globe is upside down as we want for this project the picture will be facing correctly.
The best and easiest option to have the picture look magnified is to just make sure it is wide enough
for the sides of the image to touch the jar and it will stay in place with no glue.
So you wouldn't need a wrap around image you would want two pictures taped to have a front and
back like so.
In this instance the lady used a note she made for the back of the picture instead of another photo.

Note- For use with water the picture must be sealed the water may leak threw to the image after
so much time so it is an easy and cheap craft but may not last forever.
With oil the picture does not need to be sealed and should last till dooms day. Don't forget baby
oil is clear and good option for color photos.
Tips
You may be able to get an 8x10 in a large pickle jar.
To make them more leak proof, run a strip of Teflon tape around the jar threads a few times prior to
putting on the lid. It’ll make for a better water tight seal. Couple hundred feet of tape runs about
$0.50-$1.00 at any hardware store.
Another way to seal the jars would be to use glue.
