solution to develop appropriate measures for overcoming the effects of the problem.

1. A Smoke-Free
College: Rutgers University
Purpose
• Rutgers University is one of many colleges that
still continues today to have tobacco on
campus.
• The distribution and usage of tobacco on
campus leads to an increased risk towards the
exposure of secondhand smoking.
• By creating a policy that prevents tobacco
usage and distribution on campus, a smoke-
free environment can be created, bettering the
health of both students and employees at this
school.
To evaluate the current tobacco policy for Rutgers
University and compare it to the tobacco policies
of the other Big 10 Universities.
Significance
Methods
Evaluation
• Rutgers University is not smoke-free.
• Tobacco is freely purchased on campus in
convenience stores as well as student centers.
• There are multiple locations in New Brunswick to
purchase tobacco off campus as well.
• Rutgers is a rather large University, but other
Universities such as University of Michigan and
Ohio State University have become smoke-free.
• Proper signage and prohibition of ashtray
receptacles is a start towards becoming smoke
free.
• Schools have also set up laws and methods of
citing those that violate the policy.
• There are many areas of Rutgers University that
could be considered “non-university” property;
this means that on-campus areas must be
specifically noted in order to keep tobacco away.
