Dear Professor Weiner:
Purpose Behind Portfolio
Here is a copy of my English 302 Portfolio. In it you will find a summary of all the
concepts you taught the class during the Fall 2013 semester. The main focus of
this document is to showcase the professional skills I obtained and can now
utilize thanks to this course. It will highlight Microsoft word features, design
principles and goodwill.
Reader’s Purpose
Please look over my portfolio with good intentions and give it the grade you think
it deserves. If you would like you can use it as an example for future classes.
Sincerely,
Denise Julie Rumohr

StrengthsQuest Profile
My Top 5 Strengths:
1. Futuristic- I often find myself daydreaming
about the future and asking myself, “What if?”
One way I use this strength to its full potential is
by inspiring others with my visions of the future.
2. Adaptability- I live for unseen detours and I
thrive on new experiences. Stressing when
plans change is something I hardly ever do,
instead I just accomplish what needs to be done
to finish the task. In my future, I will look for a
job that avoids structure and predictability.
3. Belief- People with belief as one of their top 5
strengths have strong life values that they
uphold, making them people you can depend
on. This holds true for me. Belief goes well with
my futuristic strength because I can see what
lies on my path ahead and know that all my
goals are possible.
4. Communication- I enjoy capturing people’s
attention. Speaking and listening to others is
one of my strong points. Public speaking is
something I enjoy and I try to improve this talent
everyday. My dream someday is to be a
motivational speaker.
5. Woo- I enjoy meeting new people and working
with others. One of my strong points is being
able to hold a conversation with almost anyone.
I think this quote sums me up perfectly: “…there
are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met
yet - lots of them.” - Tom Rath, Strengths Finder
2.0.
Mission Statement:
I am currently a junior at
Iowa State University,
majoring in Marketing.
This portfolio is a small
collection of the
knowledge I gained in

Page Breaks
How to insert a page break anywhere in your document using
Microsoft word, this was a feature I used to create this portfolio.
1. The first thing you want
to do is turn on your
paragraph marks. You will
do this by clicking on the
paragraph mark button.
2. Next you will click
where you want to start a
new page then you will
select the insert tab.
3. Then you will click
on the Page Break
button in this tab.
4. After clicking on the
Page Break Button you
should see a Page Break
appear and your text will
jump to the next page.

Table of Contents
How to automatically insert a Table of Contents using Microsoft word,
this was a feature I used to create this portfolio.
1. First you are going to click on what
you want to be heading 1 and you
are going to right click and high light
the words.
2. Then you are going to click on the
Heading 1 button, in the Styles portion
of the home tab. This will designate this
as Heading 1 of the table.
3. Then you are going to repeat step
1 but this time you will right click and
highlight the words you want to become
heading 2. Then you will repeat step 2
but you will click on Heading 2 this time.
4. After you have highlighted and
selected all of your heading you will click
on the references tab. Then click on the
Table of Contents button to choose the
style of table you would like.
5. After selecting a style, your Table of
Contents should look like this. To update
your table, you can just scroll over top

Design Principles C.R.A.P
Design Principles: C.R.A.P
StrengthsQuest Profile
For one
assignment in
English 302, I
learned about
four Design
elements:
Contrast,
Repetition,
Alignment, and
Proximity. When
using all these
elements
together it
creates a
professional look
for any
document.
Denise
Ru.mohr

This flyer was an assignment that was used to showcase C.R.A.P.
C.R.A.P is an acronym that stands for the main design principles of
Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity

Contrast:
Contrast is created
when two of the
elements on a
document are different.
A few ways to achieve
contrast are
accomplished by using
different fonts, lines,
shapes, or colors.
Contrast in this
flyer is shown by:
1.Different fonts
2.Different line
thicknesses and styles
3.Differnet color text
boxes
Denise
Ru.mohr

Repetition:
Repetition is gained
when the same element
is kept constant the
whole time. When using
repetition keep it simple
and know when to stop
repeating elements.
Repetition is
shown in this flyer
by:
1. Keeping all the boxes
the same height and
rectangular shape
2. Repeating the two
blue textboxes
3. Using the lines over
and over again

Alignment:
Alignment happens
when an element is
placed on a page so
that it is aligned with
another element, linking
the two and creating a
clear path between
them
Alignment is
shown in this flyer
by:
1. Aligning some of the
textboxes
2. Pairing up the lines
Tip: Avoid using
Centered text

Proximity:
Proximity is created
when you highlight the
most important
information, which then
helps draw the
audience’s attention to
it.
Proximity is shown
in this flyer by:
1. Bolding the title of the
event
2. Enlarging the font of
the important
information
3.Organizing the
information in an easy
to navigate path

My group name was the Engli$h Gang$ta$. I
worked on the branding that we used on each
slide of our presentation. I put the words on a
faded brick background so that it would
resemble graffiti.
The first thing part of our presentation was
introductions. Each of my team members
told some points about themselves. We all
took this time to highlight a few of our
strengths. All of us told our audience a
random fact about ourselves and then we
had a picture of ourselves to illustrate the
random fact.
After a short class activity of
StrengthsQuest Pictionary we got to the
main point of our presentation,
StrengthsQuest in your Portfolio. The first
thing we presented on was a wiifm bridge.
We wanted to clarify what a wiifm bridge
was and give them ideas to get theirs
started.
Next, we discussed different layouts for
your StrengthsQuest profile. There are
many different options you can use. We
provided the class with different layout
examples in the slides following this one.

Team Presentation (continued)
Next, we gave the class the ideas on how
to introduce their strengths. We first
showed them the traditional way as stated
on the syllabus.
Then we shared this slide. This slide gives
the class different ways they could
approach writing about their top 5
strengths.
Finally, we told the class creative ways to
personalize their mission statements. We
ended the presentation by showing the
class different examples of completed
StrengthQuest Profiles.
The main point of our Team Presentation was to get the class thinking about the
StrengthsQuest section of their portfolio. We achieved this goal by breaking down
this part of the portfolio into steps and providing them with examples.

Topic of ChoiceTopic of Choice: Goodwill
StrengthsQuest Profile
I chose to talk
about Goodwill
in this next
section. Most
of my peers do
not recognize
the impact of a
simple thank
you.
Establishing
goodwill in the
work place
helps create
good
connections
and a good
reputation.
Denise

16
Growing up my mom always taught me that if someone gives me a gift, like for my
birthday or Christmas, I should write him a thank you note to show my appreciation.
Little did I know, my mom was teaching me a fundamental tool that would really help
me out in my future.
Goodwill is very important in the business environment; some would say it is a
business’s most important asset. It helps establish a good connection in and out of
the work place. All employees, from CEOs to interns, feel good when someone
shows them their appreciation.
The following are 2 letters I wrote throughout the semester to
guest speakers that spoke during classtime:

Goodwill
This was my first thank you I wrote for English 302. It incorporates some key
elements like personalization by saying I liked her red ISU polo. This letter is
lacking depth and length. When writing a letter for goodwill, you should try to
include key points you enjoyed and learned from the presenter. I could have
included more things I learned from her when she was presenting.
Denise
Ru.mohr

GoodwillGoodwill
This was the second thank you I wrote. I feel like the writing and tone of my
letter improved greatly from the first one. I made sure to take notes so I
wouldn’t forget anything. I ended the letter with a positive personalization
about the speaker. Thank yous should be tailored to the person you are
sending it to so that the receiver feels appreciated

Thank you Editors:
The editors for this portfolio and other assignments this semester
included my roommates, friends and even a few coworkers. I am thankful
for the time they gave me to help make my work a success. Without
them I would have numerous spelling mistakes.
Thank you Ms. Weiner:
Without Ms. Weiner, I wouldn’t have been able to write about most of
the concepts in this portfolio. Ms. Weiner was a wonderful teacher who
actually took time to get to know each of her students, making the time I
spent in her classroom enjoyable and worthwhile.
Thank you Team Members:
Carly, Caitlyn, Greg and Joe were all great team members. Each one of
them had great ideas, showed up to group meetings on time and gave
me a friend to talk to in each class. By gathering our strengths, we were
all able to successfully work together to be one of the best teams I have
ever worked with. The work we completed together helped me get
started on my portfolio.
Thank you Readers:
Thank you all for taking the time to read my portfolio without an audience
this document has no point. I hope you have found reading this portfolio
worth your time and maybe even learned a few tips from it.

  • 10. 6 Table of Contents How to automatically insert a Table of Contents using Microsoft word, this was a feature I used to create this portfolio. 1. First you are going to click on what you want to be heading 1 and you are going to right click and high light the words. 2. Then you are going to click on the Heading 1 button, in the Styles portion of the home tab. This will designate this as Heading 1 of the table. 3. Then you are going to repeat step 1 but this time you will right click and highlight the words you want to become heading 2. Then you will repeat step 2 but you will click on Heading 2 this time. 4. After you have highlighted and selected all of your heading you will click on the references tab. Then click on the Table of Contents button to choose the style of table you would like. 5. After selecting a style, your Table of Contents should look like this. To update your table, you can just scroll over top the Table of Contents heading and a box with appear and then you can click on the “Update Table” button Table of Contents 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Denise Ru.mohr
  • 11. 7 Design Principles C.R.A.P Design Principles: C.R.A.P StrengthsQuest Profile For one assignment in English 302, I learned about four Design elements: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity. When using all these elements together it creates a professional look for any document. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 12. 8 This flyer was an assignment that was used to showcase C.R.A.P. C.R.A.P is an acronym that stands for the main design principles of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity Edward’s Mardi Gras Carnival Flyer Edward’s Mardi Gras Carnival Flyer 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Contrast: Contrast is created when two of the elements on a document are different. A few ways to achieve contrast are accomplished by using different fonts, lines, shapes, or colors. Contrast in this flyer is shown by: 1.Different fonts 2.Different line thicknesses and styles 3.Differnet color text boxes Denise Ru.mohr
  • 13. 9 Repetition: Repetition is gained when the same element is kept constant the whole time. When using repetition keep it simple and know when to stop repeating elements. Repetition is shown in this flyer by: 1. Keeping all the boxes the same height and rectangular shape 2. Repeating the two blue textboxes 3. Using the lines over and over again Edward’s Mardi Gras Carnival Flyer Denise Ru.mohr
  • 14. 10 Edward’s Mardi Gras Carnival Flyer Alignment: Alignment happens when an element is placed on a page so that it is aligned with another element, linking the two and creating a clear path between them Alignment is shown in this flyer by: 1. Aligning some of the textboxes 2. Pairing up the lines Tip: Avoid using Centered text Denise Ru.mohr
  • 15. 11 Edward’s Mardi Gras Carnival Flyer Proximity: Proximity is created when you highlight the most important information, which then helps draw the audience’s attention to it. Proximity is shown in this flyer by: 1. Bolding the title of the event 2. Enlarging the font of the important information 3.Organizing the information in an easy to navigate path Denise Ru.mohr
  • 16. 12 Teamwork Teamwork StrengthsQuest Profile 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Teamwork was a key element to this class. There were many assignments that required this element. The next few pages show my team presentation that was about Strengths and helpful advice to complete a StrengthsQuest profile. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 17. 13 Team Presenation Vvvvvvvvv Team Presentation 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu My group name was the Engli$h Gang$ta$. I worked on the branding that we used on each slide of our presentation. I put the words on a faded brick background so that it would resemble graffiti. The first thing part of our presentation was introductions. Each of my team members told some points about themselves. We all took this time to highlight a few of our strengths. All of us told our audience a random fact about ourselves and then we had a picture of ourselves to illustrate the random fact. After a short class activity of StrengthsQuest Pictionary we got to the main point of our presentation, StrengthsQuest in your Portfolio. The first thing we presented on was a wiifm bridge. We wanted to clarify what a wiifm bridge was and give them ideas to get theirs started. Next, we discussed different layouts for your StrengthsQuest profile. There are many different options you can use. We provided the class with different layout examples in the slides following this one. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 18. 14 Team Presention 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Team Presentation (continued) Next, we gave the class the ideas on how to introduce their strengths. We first showed them the traditional way as stated on the syllabus. Then we shared this slide. This slide gives the class different ways they could approach writing about their top 5 strengths. Finally, we told the class creative ways to personalize their mission statements. We ended the presentation by showing the class different examples of completed StrengthQuest Profiles. The main point of our Team Presentation was to get the class thinking about the StrengthsQuest section of their portfolio. We achieved this goal by breaking down this part of the portfolio into steps and providing them with examples. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 19. 15 Topic of ChoiceTopic of Choice: Goodwill StrengthsQuest Profile I chose to talk about Goodwill in this next section. Most of my peers do not recognize the impact of a simple thank you. Establishing goodwill in the work place helps create good connections and a good reputation. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 20. 16 Growing up my mom always taught me that if someone gives me a gift, like for my birthday or Christmas, I should write him a thank you note to show my appreciation. Little did I know, my mom was teaching me a fundamental tool that would really help me out in my future. Goodwill is very important in the business environment; some would say it is a business’s most important asset. It helps establish a good connection in and out of the work place. All employees, from CEOs to interns, feel good when someone shows them their appreciation. The following are 2 letters I wrote throughout the semester to guest speakers that spoke during classtime: 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Goodwill This was my first thank you I wrote for English 302. It incorporates some key elements like personalization by saying I liked her red ISU polo. This letter is lacking depth and length. When writing a letter for goodwill, you should try to include key points you enjoyed and learned from the presenter. I could have included more things I learned from her when she was presenting. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 21. 17 GoodwillGoodwill This was the second thank you I wrote. I feel like the writing and tone of my letter improved greatly from the first one. I made sure to take notes so I wouldn’t forget anything. I ended the letter with a positive personalization about the speaker. Thank yous should be tailored to the person you are sending it to so that the receiver feels appreciated Denise Ru.mohr 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu
  • 22. 18 Closing Closing StrengthsQuest Profile In closing, I would like to take the time to thank all of the people who helped me complete this portfolio. From the professor who taught this class to the friends that helped me proofread. Denise Ru.mohr
  • 23. 19 Thank Yous 125 Campus Ave. Ames, IA 50014 712-870-1104 Djrumohr@iastate.edu Thank you Editors: The editors for this portfolio and other assignments this semester included my roommates, friends and even a few coworkers. I am thankful for the time they gave me to help make my work a success. Without them I would have numerous spelling mistakes. Thank you Ms. Weiner: Without Ms. Weiner, I wouldn’t have been able to write about most of the concepts in this portfolio. Ms. Weiner was a wonderful teacher who actually took time to get to know each of her students, making the time I spent in her classroom enjoyable and worthwhile. Thank you Team Members: Carly, Caitlyn, Greg and Joe were all great team members. Each one of them had great ideas, showed up to group meetings on time and gave me a friend to talk to in each class. By gathering our strengths, we were all able to successfully work together to be one of the best teams I have ever worked with. The work we completed together helped me get started on my portfolio. Thank you Readers: Thank you all for taking the time to read my portfolio without an audience this document has no point. I hope you have found reading this portfolio worth your time and maybe even learned a few tips from it. Denise Ru.mohr
