A NARRATIVE OF CHANGE
“Change yourself so that you can influence others” – this was just one
nugget of wisdom from Nelson Mandela to his personal secretary
Zelda la Grange, originally a typist who ended up working with him for
19 years. Zelda candidly shared her unique story at a recent Gauteng
Women in Insurance function on the 21st April, attended by a group of
women from the Airborne team.
Quoting excerpts from her bestseller, Zelda shared her personal
memories of Madiba – when she met him for the first time and he spoke
to her in Afrikaans, his ability to bring together people from different
cultures and religions, her own personal ignorance of Apartheid as
a young woman and the bizarre events that led her to a life in the
presidency.
Honest, confident and relaxed, Zelda’s riveting speech had everyone in
the room mesmerised. Attendees also received autographed copies of
her bestseller ‘Good Morning, Mr Mandela’.
As one of several networking events held for women in the insurance
industry, the organisers encouraged all particpants to donate toiletries for
the Jordan House Old Age Home. Underwriters, receptionists, financial
managers, administrators, brokers, claim handlers, quality-assurance
specialists and others arrived with their arms brimming with toiletries.
“Zelda was truly inspirational,” commented Debbie Ray, “what
a wonderful day out. It was fascinating to hear about her personal
journey with the great man himself.”

Airborne Insurance took part in the annual golf day hosted by the Global
Aviator magazine on Friday 5 December 2014.
Held at the beautiful Blair Atholl Golf estate close to Lanseria Airport, the
course itself was designed by Gary Player. The Airborne Insurance four ball
enjoyed a glorious sun filled 18 holes followed by a presentation dinner.
It is almost impossible to find a
better setting than the Stellenbosch
airfield on a beautiful summer’s
day, to hold the annual SA spot
landing championship.
Hosted over the weekend of 29
November, approximately 25
competitors took part, and there
was rather a lot of flying. There
were a huge variety of aircraft
ranging from Bosbok, Vans RV’s,
Citabria’s, Decathlons, Cessna’s,
Piper Cherokee’s, Twin engine
Piper Seneca and even a L39.
The Airborne team got the chance to catch up with the pilots and the members of the
Stellenbosch Flying Club. Airborne Insurance sponsored the winner’s trophy for the Fun Class
participants, which went to Charles Peck
All in all it was a very successful weekend, and we were very privileged to be in
attendance. There is no question that we will be back for the next one!
The first fly-in hosted in Brits over the 21 and 22
November 2014. This weekend was very well attended
and for the brave there were camping facilities! The
navigation rally was a great success with everyone in
the air around 11h00 on Saturday morning.
Tjaart and Kim from Airborne Insurance attended,
and it was the perfect opportunity to touch base and
catch up with everyone. No less than 20 Slings made
an appearance, and there were even a few from
neighbouring Namibia. We look forward to the 2015
Brits Sling fly-in.

INSURANCE CLAUSES:
FULL PREMIUM IF LOSS
It is understood and agreed that in the event of a claim arising hereunder
the balance of the Full Annual Premium shall become due and payable
forthwith.
FORCED LANDING
Insurers hereon agree that in the event of an insured Aircraft making a
forced landing in any place where subsequent safe take-off is impossible,
they will pay all reasonable costs, expenses or expenditure for the
removal of the Aircraft to the nearest suitable take-off area provided
always that Insurers’ liability for such costs, expenses or expenditure, and
for any loss of or damage to the Aircraft, shall not exceed the value of the
Aircraft as declared in the Policy.
Kilimanjaro, situated in Northern Tanzania, East Africa is the highest peak
on the African continent; and also the tallest free-standing mountain in the
world, rising to an impressive 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).
Although Michelle does not consider herself a climber, she took on the
challenge, of summiting Kilimanjaro. “It was tough and completely out of
my comfort zone, but ‘hakuna matata’ (Swahili for ‘No problem/worry’),
I decided to be prepared (information and gear-wise), and ‘pole pole’
(Swahili for ‘Slowly slowly’) walk, breathe and keep my eye on the prize.”
Michelle summited on New Year’s Day 1 January 2015, and her time
from base camp to Africa’s highest peak was a gruelling 6.5 hours. “I
underestimated the effect of the summit morning - I think I might have
actually done around 30 minutes of sleepwalking up the mountain! Even
though Kilimanjaro is achievable for everyone, one gains respect during
the magnitude of summiting it” says Michelle.
Positive lessons learnt:
- Take on new adventures; you never know what you may achieve.
- Appreciate the journey, you should always look to the future, but it’s
always good to look back on what you’ve achieved, and appreciate the
view you have now.

For the past three and a half years, Barend de Beer and his wife Sarie have
been building their own Cozy MkIV aircraft. Now, only two months away
from completion, the couple can look back on their hard work and fierce
dedication with pride.
“Our journey started in October 2011 when we bought the plans from
Aircraft Spruce in America. We initially began the building process with
the fuselage and smaller components in our garage at home, and then
as the aircraft progressed moved it to our hangar at Wonderboom,”
explains Barend. “Kevin Hopper, the CAA AP from the Experimental Aircraft
Association has been invaluable throughout the process; guiding us,
carrying out inspections and making sure that all the components we built
from scratch compiled with the quality and technical specifications.”
There are approximately 300 Cozy MkIV’s worldwide, with the de Beer’s
aircraft being one of four Cozy’s built in South Africa. According to David
van der Merwe, Airborne Insurance was more than happy to take on the
challenge of finding a suitable insurance company to take on the risk where
most companies wouldn’t.
The Cozy MkIV was originally designed by Burt Rutan, the creator of the
Virgin Space Ship One. Unlike a conventional aircraft, the Cozy will not
stall mid-flight; instead it automatically lowers its nose and flies faster if the
plane is being flown too slowly. As Barend points out, this immediately
eliminates one of the primary reasons of a potential accident. With its
exceptional design, the aircraft comfortably seats four people and can carry
up to 440kgs. It has a cruise speed of 320kph, a range of 1800kms and
only weighs 476kgs.
Barend’s interest in aviation began shortly after finishing school when he
worked as a quality technician on the Rooivalk at Atlas Aircraft Corporation
(now Denel Aviation). He started his pilot’s license concurrently with the
building of the Cozy, and plans to finish his last 8 hours of solo-flight on his
own aircraft. “It has been an amazing journey for both my wife and I, and
we are justifiably proud of what we have achieved together,” he says. “It’s
been a long time coming but we are very excited for this next chapter of
our lives.
INVESTING IN BLAIR ATHOLL JUST
MAKES PLANE SENSE
As the brainchild of two Pretoria pilots, Lanseria Airport revolutionised South
African aviation and is now an internationally recognised airport. As a key
player in the aviation sector, Lanseria has undergone several expansion projects.
As a result of the airport’s success, the area surrounding Lanseria has become
sought after among property investors and aviation enthusiasts who wish to
reside close to where they house their aircraft. One estate development that
has become particularly popular due to its proximity to Lanseria Airport and
the exclusive lifestyle it provides is Blair Atholl.
Ideally situated a stone’s throw from Lanseria Airport – making it the perfect
residence for both aviation enthusiasts and businessmen who travel often –
Blair Atholl is set on 600ha of land, and features an award-winning, Gary
Player designed golf course. In addition, Blair Atholl offers some of the
lowest density housing in South Africa with only 329 stands on the estate,
meaning there is only one home to every two hectares of land.
Apart from the numerous features that the estate offers, its proximity to amenities
also adds to its allure, and makes it an ideal option for buyers with families.
