25. The 1938 stage play X, known as Angel Street in the United States, motivated
the origin of the term because of the systematic psychological manipulation
used by the main character on a victim.
The plot concerns a husband who attempts to convince his wife and others
that she is insane by manipulating small elements of their environment, and
subsequently, insisting that she is mistaken or remembering things incorrectly
when she points out these changes.
The original title stems from the dimming of the Xs in the house that
happened when the husband was using the Xs in the attic while searching for
hidden treasure.
The wife accurately notices the dimming and discusses the phenomenon, but
the husband insists she is imagining a change in the level of illumination.
Either give us X or the originating term.
28. In 1999, Bob Balaban asked X if there was something

called the film a "classic situation: all suspects under one
roof". He was also inspired by the 1930s films, “The
Rules of the Game” and “Charlie Chan in London”.

43. On 28th June, 1914 when Gavrilo Princep shot Archduke
Ferdinand, it apparently triggered off World War I.
It seems that several physicians were traveling with the
Archduke's party and he was immediately taken into the
care of highly skilled medical professionals. They first had
to examine the Archduke's wound, but when they tried to
unbutton the royal tunic, they were unable to do so.
Precious time was lost and delay in stopping the blood
loss cost the Archduke his life.
Question is why could the doctors not take the tunic off?
45. The buttons in the vain Archduke’s dress were
merely an embellishment and were not
functional.
To ensure a perfect fit, the Archduke would “sew
himself” into his dress every morning.
By the time the doctors discovered the secret of
his sartorial splendor and cut away his clothing,
Archduke Ferdinand had bled out and died.

80. In a 1939 lecture at Columbia University, one of X’s
biggest proponents said:
It might be a Scottish name, taken from a story about two
men on a train. One man says, "What's that package up
there in the baggage rack?" And the other answers, "Oh,
that's a X". The first one asks, "What's a X?" "Well," the
other man says, "it's an apparatus for trapping lions in the
Scottish Highlands." The first man says, "But there are no

answers, "Well then, that's no X!" So you see that a X is
