3. DEFINITION :
The Atraumic Restorative Treatment is a procedure based on
removing caries tooth tissue using hand instrument and restoring
the cavity with an adhesive restorative materials.
PRINCIPLES :
• Removing carious tooth tissues using hand instruments.
• Restoring the cavity with a restorative materials that stick to the
tooth.
5. Basic Procedure :
1. Operator's Position
• Best view possible (chair / tool)
• Comfortable Posture i.e straight back , thighs parallel to ground
feet flat on ground .
• Behind the head of the pateints
• Most comfortable position are 12 o'clock and 10 o' clock
6. 2. Patient's Position :
• Lying back of flat surface
• Head rest made of firm foam or rubber ring should be provided
• Operating field at the height of operator's chest
• Patient's head position to provide access to the area of
operation.
7. Basic Technique
Step 1 :
Isolation of the operating site from saliva
• By using cotton rolls
• Easier access due to dry environment
• GIC performs better in less moisture
• Better visibility
8. Step 2 :
Excavating the enamel of Carious tooth
• Using enamel hatchet to remove
unsupported enamel
• Removing the dentin if requires
• Widen the entrance of small carious
lesion
• Soft carries is to be removed to prevent
further progression by an excavator
9. Step 3 :
Condition the cavity wall and
occlusal surface
• Conditioner is applied for 10 -
15 seconds
• Wash and dried
• It helps in improving the
chemical bonding between the
tooth and GIC
10. Step 4 :
Mixing and Applying the GIC
• GIC is mixed according to the
manufacturer's instruction
• It must filled in the cavity in
sections
• Slightly overfill the cavity
11. Step 5 :
The finger pressure technique
• Press firmly with index finger
sideways
• It is used to remove the excess of
GIC
12. Step 6 :
Check Occlusion
• Check the bite using articulating
paper
• No cotton should be in between
the bite
Patients are advised not to eat
anything atleast for one hour
13. Hygine and Infection Control
• Use of disposable gloves
• Clean and Sterile working environment
• Sterilization of instruments using an autoclaves or boiling in pan
or pressure cooker
• Disposing off any used cotton pledgets or gauze pieces or
gloves safely
