Abstract:
Asterius hygrometricus is one kind of basidiomycetous edible mushroom. Its inhibitory
and cytotoxic effects have been tested on human cervical cancer cell line HELA, using
Adriamycin and Cytocristin as reference positive controls. Inhibition of cervical cancer cell by
Asterius hygrometricus was determined by the MTT colorimetric assay method and was
employed to evaluate cell viability in this cytotoxic assay. Micromolar concentration of both WE
and ME of upper layer and inner layer of Asterius hygrometricus inhibited the growth of both
cell lines in a dose dependent manner by making a stock solution of crude extract 1mg/ml and
applying the working concentration (0.005-0.030 mg/ml) The IC 50 values of WE and ME in
Hela cell line were 60.25±1.201mg/ml and 57.12±0.15mg/ml respectively .Cell viability was
also assayed by the crude extract with the help of PI and DAPI staining and cells were
photographed using fluorescence microscopy. It indicates that both WE and ME of this
mushroom fruit body are effective for inhibition of cervical cancer cell lines. This action
suggests that the extract of Asterius hygrometricus might be a new promising fruitful agent for
the treatment of human cervical cancer cell line and cost cutting remedy for the human being
especially poor women.
