“How to Read a Compass” is a children’s book that is part of a fictional “How-To”
series my class created. After extensive research on the art and typography of children’s
books, I incorporated my previous design of a compass in this illustrated booklet to teach
children how to make use of such a handy tool. Trying to incorporate how I would have
used a compass as a child, I felt it suiting to keep things fun. This illustrated booklet
contains directions on how to read and understand a compass along with some
interesting examples involving treasure hunts, pirates, and candy.

7 double sided 3.25 in. by 4 in. cards
This project was created to help beginning graphic design students learn the 7 categories
of type in a fun colorful way. I chose to pair each category; Old-style, San-Serif, Script,
Slab-Serif, Transitional, Modern and Decorative, with one of the 7 personality types;
the king, the priest, the server, the warrior, the scholar, the sage, and the artisan. On the
front of each flash card, you can find an example font with its appropriate personality
type along with a fun illustration. The back of each card shows the classification of said
font, the designer and a brief history. For example, I found the slab-serif fonts to appear
strong and sturdy thus I paired it with the personality type of the warrior.

The Tiny Stars Academy is a fictional afterschool program. This brochure represents
the Academy as a fun, artistic yet academic atmosphere for kids. I chose the theme
of outer space to attract young creative and imaginative minds. Not to stray from the
academic aspects of the program, I chose to represent these through a chalk-board
look with color and font selection to depict a classroom setting.

This poster was created at the request of the Santa Fe Big Band and Music Department.
The objective of the poster was to advertise for the upcoming Jazz performance, “Jazz Up
Spring” and provide the viewer with all the information necessary about the event. I chose
to use the font “Antonio” along with a bright color combonation to represent the Big Band
era and fliers I have seen for other Jazz events.

The purpose of this project was to create a 3-dimensional design that represented irony. My first
thought was how most students spend great amounts of money on coffee from Starbucks yet
complain about being broke. Due to my opinion that Starbucks coffee is definitely not worth the
money they charge for it, I decided to use this project to exaggerate this opinion in a funny and
ironic way. I created a wooden Starbucks to-go cup that was a third of the size of a regular
“small” coffee and a price tag of 650 dollars to represent the idea of little quality for a great price.

Inspired by themes of fantasy in Lewis Carrol’s novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,
I created a panoramic photo depicting what my personal Wonderland would look like.
My goal was to create an image that showed a realistic setting being overtaken by themes
of fantastic realism such as giants and larger-than-life animals.

The Valentine’s Day Swing Dance is hosted every year by the Santa Fe College Music
Department. I created this poster to help the department spread the word about their
biggest fundraising event for the Fine Arts Hall. It was a bit difficult accomodating my client
with all the content they requested but this was definitely a fun project that allowed me some
creative freedom. I chose to use the chalk-board poster style and combining themes from
Jazz posters along with the colors and images associated with Valentine’s Day.

I have always been involved in music throughout my education, and within
the more classical ensemble, I was always the cymbal player. I enjoyed the
part because I liked being loud and seen on stage. I used this soldering project
to represent my personality as an artist and my personality as a cybal player.
I used varrying sizes of wire to create the figure using a soldering iron. I then
spray painted and mounted the figure in a wooden spray painted base.

Fall 2015
This project was created for a local Progressive R&B band called Hail! Cassius Neptune.
The Band was preparing for their first performing tour and needed a poster that represented
their sounds and interests. For the purpose of the name of the tour “Leap Day Tour”.
I chose to create an outerspace scene featuring a frog. The group especially enjoyed
my addition of the illustration of the planet Neptune in the background.
16. HAIL CASSIUS NEPTUNE
LEAP DAY TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT

Digital Illustration and Print
This piece was a part of the Hail! Cassius Neptune Leap Day Tour series. I created a tour
announcement for the band listing all the venues they were to visit on Leap Day Tour. 2016.
Each venue listing has the date, city, state and accompanying bands for each performance.
I incorporated a picture of a dark sky above a forest to serve as a slight comic relief due the band’s
worries of getting lost while navigating the East Coast. I felt that a night sky also complimented the
tour poster featuring a dark background color to resemble outerspace.

I created a Fall 2016 Tour Announcement for local Gainesville band, Hail! Cassius
Neptune. For this announcement, I incorporated original artwork created with pen, ink
and water color. I then manipulated the artwork in Photoshop and created copies
of different sections of the drawing to fill the empty space. Similar to the Leap Day Tour
announcement, this piece contains dates, and locations of each performance.

This is an image of Hail! Cassius Neptunes’ merch set up at venues. The photo
features several items that I designed such as a double sided standard business
card, C.D. art, and a vinyl sticker featuring original album art. As one may see,
the theme of “cats” runs deep within this group. The band gets it’s name from
lead singer Kylie Jo’s pet cat “Cassius Neptune” who is featured on the C.D. Both
the business card and vinyl bumper sticker are based off orignial artwork created
using cutout paper then stylized in Photoshop.
