Refugees
I. Introduction
A. (Attention Getting Device) – Does anyone know the number of Syrian
refugee’s that have came across into the United States in 2016?
B. (Relevance) – This is relevant to all of us because the number of
refugees being brought into the United States today has risen
drastically because of the Syrian refugee crisis and has potential to
endanger your safety.
C. (Credibility) – I am credible to talk about this issue because I have
done extensive research on this topic.
D. (Preview) –
I. The Problem: We don’t know who we are bringing in to the
United States due to poor screening.
II. Cause: The Syrian Civil War and they are fleeing their
country and due to the U.S. Open Border Policy we let them
in.
III. Solution: Vetting
TRANSITION- Now that we have gone over what we will be covering today, let’s
begin with the problem.
II. Body-Problem
A. We don’t know who is entering our country.
I. The United States admitted its 10,000th Syrian refugee this
week in a resettlement program announced by President
Obama last fall. (Cite) –As you can see from these pictures,
it’s easy to see that the number of refugees has increased
drastically and have been placed all over the United States.
II. “The rape epidemic in this world is becoming pandemic. It’s
not confined to one location. Fifteen years ago in Norway,
rape was unheard of. Now it’s an epidemic,” Sherman said.
“The perpetrators are 100 percent Muslim males. In Sweden,
rape has gone up by 500 percent. Stockholm recently had the
dubious honor of opening their very first rape center for men
and boys.” In the northern U.K. city of Rotherham, more than
1,400 children have been beaten, raped and trafficked in a
well-documented turn of events that has gone largely
unreported in the U.S. That’s a dubious distinction that
Sherman believes is tied to the high number of Muslim
refugees shipped there by the U.S. government. (Cite) –The
chances of this kind of situation happening to us in the United
2. States is more likely than not if we continue to keep bringing
more refugees into America at this rapid rate.
TRANSITION- Now that we know what the problem is, let’s go over the cause.
III. Body-Cause
A. The Syrian Civil War
I. The Syrian War started on March 15th, 2011. Syrian civil
war grew out of a popular uprising against the regime of
President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, part of Arab Spring
uprisings in the Middle East. (Cite) –Many people believe that
the Syrian War started recently within the last year but that’s
probably due to the media talking about it much more today
because of the refugee crisis.
II. Its current count of people who have fled the civil war in
Syria, which started in 2011, is 4.8 million. Many of those 4.8
million refugees are in neighboring countries such as Turkey,
Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. Due to overcrowding and
the large number of overall refugees, the UN has called on
other countries around the world to accept more Syrians for
resettlement. (Cite) –Since the surrounding countries are
beginning to overcrowd the refugees start to pour into the
United States and soon we could possibly overcrowd.
III. In September 2015, Clinton had called the 10,000-figure for
the United States a good start but had urged an increase up to
65,000. That 65,000-figure is a 550 percent increase from the
10,000 that Obama supported. (Cite) –This shows that the
more we ramp up the number of refugees the chances of your
safety being in danger goes up.
TRANSITION- After hearing what the cause is, let’s go over the solution.
IV. Body-Solution
A. Heavy Vetting
I. Vetting: to check (something) carefully to make sure it
is acceptable –So through this process we would amp
up the screening immensely and have the refugees go
through extensive background checking.
II. Trump called for a new screening test, which he labeled
“extreme, extreme vetting,” designed to keep out anyone who
does not share “American values” and who is not prepared to
“embrace a tolerant American society.” (Cite) –What Trump
means by American Values is equality, individualism and
privacy, and volunteerism. Things like that.
V. Conclusion
3. A. (Audience Prepared for conclusion)- Now that we’ve gone over the
solution lets conclude and review what we went over today.
B. (Review)-
I. The problem: The number of refugees is increasing and we
don’t know who they are.
II. The cause: The Syrian Civil War and they are fleeing their
country and due to the U.S. Open Border Policy we let them
in.
III. Solution: Vetting
C. (Memorable Close)- So as the election is right around the corner your
vote will have a big impact on how refugee and immigration is
handled in the future.
