Background – A summary of My Experience with Compucare
My association with Compucare goes back to 2000. I was financial lead at King
Edward VII’s Hospital on the major system upgrade project, being responsible for
mitigating against business risk by ensuring that the code and mapping tables that sit
in the system worked effectively and that the hospital continued to invoice for activity
in a timely manner. I worked closely with senior staff at Streets Heaver and thanks to
King Edward VII being an early implementer, this project gave me a unique position
interfacing between the hospital and Streets Heaver.
My remit as financial lead was to oversee the ongoing effectiveness of processes and
to manage the financial and operational interfaces of Compucare. I directly managed
the following modules:
 Stock
 Contracts
 Patient Invoices
 Patient Credits
 Provider Invoices
 Provider Credits
 Patient Ledger
 Provider Ledger
I was closely involved in developing the data flow of the Theatres module and
ultimately used the data to drive through an efficiency programme for the hospital.
I was responsible for the management of data and information, which as well as
including production of reports gave me responsibility for compliance and
governance. This included ensuring that there was a comprehensive manual of
policies and operating procedures, training packages and regular audit and systems
reviews. The production of period end reconciliations, including work in progress
reports, stock management reports and cash balance reports were important for
providing a robust set of accounts.
The system was also used effectively for management purposes, for example, to
support discussions and negotiations with consultants and insurers. Data gathered was
used to drive the pricing negotiations with insurers and was used effectively to
support discussions with insurers about efficient use of consumables used.
In terms of the operational process flows, contract management is one of the most
important functionalities. I ensured that front-end, patient facing users were supported
by robust processes that delivered accurate information every time. My role included
the review and updating of mapping tables into Healthcode’s EDI system, which
ensured minimum adverse impact on data flows and payments to and from insurers.
At Imperial Private Healthcare I commissioned an external review of Compucare
and recommended a merger of our two systems currently used in this multi-site
organisation. The merger project is currently live and the Trust aims to complete this
by March 2015.
The external review also recommended a number of improvements to the
management of the system and I have been able to draw on my experience of
Compucare and existing good relations with Streets Heaver to support these
developments.
My work currently includes a review to improve the efficiency of Pharmacy and high
cost devices and Compucare is helping to drive this forward. The Imperial project is
also working closely with Healthcode, to implement EDI and also with PHIN.
My focus is on ensuring that our software allows Imperial Private Healthcare keep
moving forwards and that no stone remains unturned. The work, for example, that I
was able to do regarding Theatre efficiency ensured that I was able to recommend a
model that saved King Edward VII’s Hospital a significant amount of money.
My focus is on making processes as robust as possible to ensure good governance,
compliance and efficiency throughout the organisation.
