MINT: CONNECTING EXISTING AND NEW APPLICATIONS TO BLOCKCHAIN PROTOCOLS
3. IOT Sensor Data Market Size
THE IOT SENSOR MARKET IS HUGE & RAPIDLY GROWING.
THE DATA BEING PRODUCED IS WORTH 300 BILLION USD PER YEAR
• Market for IoT sensors reached USD
600B/year in 2015 with 9 billion
sensors installed globally;
• expected to reach 34 billion sensors
installed by 2019;
• The value of the data to primary
owners of the sensors is circa USD
300B/year.
4. …the market is growing fast!
90% OF THE SENSOR DATA IS PRODUCED BY CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS,
10% BY CONSUMER DEVICES
Data Origins
5. Unlocking the Value of IOT Sensor Data
TOWARDS A SENSOR DATA MONETIZATION MODEL
• Data value produced and used only by owners of sensors:
$300B/year;
• 10% of the data is interesting to potential buyers
• Data (sets or streams) will be interesting for 1-3 buyers on
average based on own and commissioned research;
• Estimated value of this data is $30-90B/year globally today;
• Number of sensors deployed expected to triple by 2020
to 30 billion from 9.7 billion sensors today;
• We expect the value of the data interesting for resale to grow to
$90-270B/year by 2020.

Editor's Notes
Hi, I’m Frank and I work for SettleMint, a blockchain company: we help organisations to integrate blockchain technology into their existing business.
About a year ago we created a second company: DataBorker DAO. Why? We needed a proof of blockhain-concept and along the way we discovered a huge opportunity: a marketplace where you can buy and sell sensor data. An E-Bay or Air BNB for data. Or how to turn sunk costs into revenu streams.
So, today I mainly work for DataBorker DAO. We’re not yet operational we’re working hard to be up and running by the end of the year. So, today I mainly work for DataBorker DAO. We’re not yet operational we’re working hard to be up and running by the end of the year.
What I’m going to explain may seem complex. Now, I’m not a techie, I’m just a marketeer, so normaly everybody should understand instantly what I’m going to explain here. The market for IoT sensors reached USD 600B/year in 2015 with 9 billion sensors installed globally;
expected to reach 34 billion sensors installed by 2019;
The value of the data to the owners of sensors is arround USD 300B/year.
max 2 year investment payback required in most industries for such investments;
the value of the data being produced is circa 1/2 of the annual investment to the sensor owner to meet internal payback period requirements;
High Upfront Sunk costs:
- SMART CITIES ARE EXPECTING AN INVESTMENT OF 150+ MILLION EUR TO DEPLOY SENSORS
- FEW OF THEM HAVE FORESEEN SUCH A BUDGET IN THEIR PLANNING
THIS FORCES THEM INTO VENDOR LOCK, PRIVATE-PUBLIC PARTNERSHIPS WITH LARGE SENSOR MANUFACTURERS
AFTER INSTALLATION, THE SENSORS NEED TO BE MAINTAINED - A PERPETUAL MAINTENANCE FEE.
DATA IS STORED IN THE SILOS OF THE COMPANIES WHO OWN THE SENSORS, COMPLETELY INACCESSIBLE TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
EACH COMPANY THAT PURCHASES AND DEPLOYS SENSORS STORES THE RESULTING DATA IN THEIR OWN DATA WAREHOUSE
THIS LOCKS THE DATA AWAY FROM INTERESTED PARTIES
INTEGRATING AND SYNCING THOUSANDS OF DATABASES WITH LEGACY TECHNOLOGY IS NOT FEASIBLE FROM A TECHNICAL OR ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE
- All commercial sectors are producing & utilising IoT sensor data for their own purposes today;
The top 3 sectors with nearly 60% of total investment in IoT sensor data are:
Manufacturing & Natural Resources
Utilities & Transportation
Government
Personal data is a relatively minor piece of the data pie with less than 10% of the total market
The value of the data being being produced and used exclusively by the owners of sensors is circa $300B/year;
With a base assumption that 10% of the data is interesting to potential buyers and that this data will be interesting for 1-3 buyers on average based on own and commissioned research;
The estimated value of this data to secondary users (3rd parties) is $30-90B/year globally today;
The number of sensors deployed is expected to triple by 2020 to 30 billion from 9.7 billion sensors today;
We expect the value of the data interesting for resale to grow to $90-270B/year by 2020.
Today we have a Beta-version of the platform. A test version but we have our developers working on the real platform as we speakThe Platform:
Buyers purchase access to sensor data
Improved data is resold via the platform
Purchased data flows to the buyers (using Blockchain technology and smart contracts)
Sensor Owner are remunerated in DTX utility tokens
- Network Operators get recompensed for streaming sensor data
Characteristics:
- Sensor owners are connected and set the price for their data to be sold
- Data buyers search for relevant data streams and data sets
- Data buyers buy for their own use or enrich data and resell it on the DataBroker platform
- Purchases of data on DataBroker can be micro transactions to buy data for discrete and finite time periods.
TODAY, MORE THAN 5000 COMPANIES GLOBALLY ARE ACQUIRING AND REPACKAGING DATA TO SELL IT ON:
- CONSULTANCIES purchase sensor data to create value adding insights for their clients;
BESIDES THESE 5000 COMPANIES, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF HUGE USE CASES FOR DATA THAT IS ALREADY OUT THERE TODAY BUT INACCESSIBLE
- ACADEMIA: Data needs of researchers
- SMART CITIES: Improve the lives of citizens
- SMART CONSUMPTION: think about online shopping
- AGRICULTURE: More granular data than the national weather service can provide- AUTOMOTIVE: 100’s of sensors already on all cars, transport trucks- HEALTH MONITORING
