Abstract
Reflecting about the issue of students failing which is currently present at high school
level, an investigation was developed, generated mainly by the OECD (Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development), the RIEMS (Reform of Higher Secondary
Education) and the National Development Plan. Also they conducted field research
based on interviews with teachers to discuss the possible reasons that cause students have
a high failure level.
One of the assumptions is that sometimes students do not find a way to apply the materials
in a practical and relative way to their environment. This is observed when asked to
associate a subject and explain it. They do not have the confidence and doubt their
knowledge and skills. Unaware of how to do research they do not achieve the desired
objective. With their lack of adequate vocational and emotional education not letting the
student choose their area of study properly.
In the OECD, Mexico has established a 2012 performance goal for a country average of
435 points, combined between reading and maths. Mexico is also among the countries
with continuous improvements in the PISA results.
Sometimes students do not find application to the modules that they are taking, and they
are asked to associate a subject between modules not achieving the desired
objective. Recalling that in the first semester they are unaware of the research process
and therefore when they are asked to explain a subject they can not do it and doubt the
organization of ideas, information, knowledge and skills they possess.
What is the author’s main argument?
In this article the author states that failure in high school is a
current issue that causes worry. In the study is stated that
students from CONALEP in Quintana Roo are not able to
apply knowledge or materials in real life. It is also said that
those students cannot explain what they have learned due
they lack of confidence.
What conclusions are drawn?
Some conclusions are that students are not able to relate
information learned in school in their daily life due they lack
of confidence. It was also concluded that the students
cannot put in practice what they learn because they do not
have the habit of doing research or continue learning about
what the see in class.
What evidence does the author put forward to support the
argument and conclusion?
The evidence shown consisted in asking the students
associate a subject between modules they are learning.
Many times, they where incapable of doing it.
What is your view of evidence? Can you spot any
weaknesses in the methodology, the findings and the way
that conclusions are drawn?
Personally, I do not think that the research was very
complicated to conduct. I consider that results are easy to
find. It is enough giving an assignment and collecting the
results.
Has the author made any implicit assumptions about
shared beliefs which you, the reader, might question?
In my opinion, I could not detect any possible
assumption. The results are based on the evaluations
solved by the students.
