Homelessness is a major issue in Hawaii due to high property costs, limited housing space, and insufficient government resources. Buying or renting a home is extremely expensive due to high demand from those wanting to live in "paradise". Additionally, catering to the booming tourism industry takes up much of the available housing space. Government agencies tasked with assisting the homeless have limited funding to address the complex root causes of homelessness in a meaningful way. Many propose only temporary fixes that fail to create long-term solutions to the problem.
4. People want to come to paradise and they get here with a job but they
find it's really hard to live here.
Buying a home is super expensive, renting a place is very, very expensive.
5. Many people are even offered a
plane ticket from the state to
move off the island and go to
the mainland to find better
pricing for homes , but many
refuse to leave.
7. Catering to
tourists comes
at a hefty price
for locals

HOWEVER THIS LEADS TO LIMITED

8. Always Competing
for a Place to Live
Finding a place to live in Hawaii is a
competition for everyone. There are a
lot of Army bases and housing for
students that take up the space.
10. Social-service and government
agencies assisting the homeless in
Hawaii have limited resources to
address what many call a crisis.
Government leaders, meanwhile,
have largely implemented only short-
term fixes that essentially move
homeless populations from one
locale to another but do not address
the complex root causes of
homelessness.
11. Government Getting Cut
Honolulu County, which banned sitting
and lying down in Waikiki and other
places in 2014, saw overall funding from
HUD slashed by more than $525,000 this
year, impacting programs that house
about 465 people.
