Session1: Different Ways of Working

Aims
 To introduce you to 4 main ways of
arranging students in the classroom
 To introduce you to pairwork and
groupwork
 To find solutions to potential problems
of pairwork and groupwork
Definitions of pairwork and
groupwork
 1.What is closed pairwork or
simultaneous pairwork?
 2.What is public pairwork or open
pairwork?
 3.What is closed groupwork or
simultaneous groupwork?
 4.What is public groupwork or open
groupwork?
Discussions
 Can you name other ways of working in
a class?
 What are the advantages and
disadvantages of pairwork and
groupwork?
Engagement in groupwork
 Everyone contributed an idea.
 Shy trainees were encouraged to
speak.
 Everyone listened to other people’s
idea.
 Some trainees were talking about sth
different.
 Some trainees interrupted other people
to talk about their own ideas.
 Some trainees were writing.
 The group tried to come to consensus.

Discuss the following questions:
1. 1.Do we all have the same opinions?
2. 2.Is it important to find out other
people’s opinions? Why?
3. 3.Can we communicate with people
who have different opinions from us?
4. 4. When you share and discuss your
opinions, does it make you feel more
confident and relaxed when you
speak English? Why?
What helps groupwork?
Agree or disagree?
a. Sitting quietly and say nothing.
b. Enjoying yourself.
c. Asking if you don’t understand.
d. Thinking your opinions aren’t important.
e. Encouraging shy members to speak and
contribute their ideas.
f. Trying to speak even if you feel shy.
g. Interrupting someone if you want to say sth.
h. Writing everything down.
i. Thinking your ideas is more important than
other people’s.
j. Listening carefully and if you disagree
explain why.
Session 2
Working together: PYRAMID
What is pyramid working
arrangement?
Agreement or disagreement
a. it’s better to work alone.
b. I can learn a lot from my colleagues.
c. I can only learn from the teacher.
d. Sharing ideas is a good way to learn.
e. If I haven’t got a dictionary I can’t find
out the meaning of a word.
f. Group work is important way to learn.
g. Group work is good fun.
Session 3: Working together:
Cocktail
Aims:
 To make you familiar with a work
arrangement techniques called
“COCKTAIL”.
 To get you to see how mingling and
discussion can help students relax and feel
more confident with each other.
Cocktail
Find someone who ……….
Reasons for doing cocktail
activity
1. When you feel relaxed, it is easier to talk
to people.
2. The more you find out about people and
their ideas, the more comfortable and
confident you feel when you talk to them.
3. When we have things in common with
other people, it is good to be able to
share it and talk about it.
4. When we do not have things in common
with other people, we can still listen to
them and discuss our differences. This is
a good way to learn new ideas and make
us think that there are always different
ways to look at things.
