The Problem
The Problem:
Economic, social, and racial barriers hinder under-
resourced youth from achieving self-sufficiency.
AFH’s target population:
Teens primarily from Boston and the surrounding area,
particularly those of low socioeconomic status.
AFH’s Solution
By providing AFH youth:

AFH equips teens with the tools of self-sufficiency and

Proposal
STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math
To further develop STEAM Power AFH will:
●Document and formalize STEAM learning in curriculum
●Provide continued professional opportunities for mentors in STEAM concepts
●Hold exhibits of STEM inspired works
●Conduct special outreach to innovation-based companies
By establishing STEAM Power as an integral part of their teen program, AFH hopes
to provide more opportunities for its students and create a model for similar
organizations to utilize in the future.

  1. Team 5 is presenting a proposal on behalf of Artists for Humanity. Artists for Humanity is a 501c3 nonprofit lead by Susan Rogerson. Founded in 1991, it currently has 11 board members, 336 employees (the majority of that number are student employees) and 170 volunteers. 22 sec 13 18 26 79
  2. Artists for Humanity was founded by two young teens and Rogerson to bridge economic, racial and social divisions by providing under-resourced youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts.” 13 sec
  3. The problem AFH has isolated is the fact that economic, social, and racial barriers often barr youth from educational/career opportunities. Their target population is Boston teens particularly those of low socioeconomic status interested in the arts.
  4. AFH’s strives to bridge these barriers by providing youth with mentorship, educational experiences, paid employment in the arts, and a creative community in which they are respected and heard. As one AFH alum put it" I feel like I don’t have to try to "fit in" here... AFH has made it very clear that it is hard to get somewhere without a college education. Last year, AFH: Invested $620,000 to employ 340 Boston teen leading to Hosted 61 exhibits, murals, and public installations Worked with youth to complete 689 projects for paying clients 100% HS graduation rate vs. BPS’s 65.9% 95% immediately enroll in college vs. 66% nationally 66% graduate college vs. 59% nationally
  6. -STEAM Power aligns with Forest Foundation’s mission to delivering services to underserved populations and leadership development -self-sufficiency, responsibility, active members in their projects -Shift in labor force to STEM yet 16% of HS seniors are interested and prepared for STEM (Dept. of Edu) -AFH mentors and tutors would hear statements like “I don’t do math or science” and they feel disconnected from STEM fields -Yet by emphasizing STEM learning in their studios they found success -79% of AFH youth reported increased math/science understanding -“After working on all of these interesting creative design and building projects, I have developed a strong passion for the career I want to pursue. I want to become a civil engineer and continue to be involved in projects that enrich the community and make the city a better place to live. Thanks AFH for showing me this career path, letting me know what I am capable of achieving, and giving me chance to do something special.” -STEM concepts already foundation of many AFH projects (ex: Sculpture/3D Design 8x8 recycle symbol of aluminum and recycled bottle caps) -architecture software, mathematics problem solving, drafting, engineering concepts -AFH realized the informal approach was successful but scattered and could be far more effective if formalized -Present Slide content-- Curriculum formalized with Dr. Lynn Goldsmith of Educational Development Center with: -a guided process for explaining and visually representing scientific concepts, and for follow up research by youth -presentations of the pathways and needs for a career in the STEM discipline of project focus -instruction of the skill sets, both cognitive and work-based, youth experience through project participation -documentation of the pedagogy and project evaluation for future dissemination and replication by AFH and other similar organizations -With STEAM as a part of the AFH institution students are better prepared for HS, college, workforce and other organizations can take advantage of the innovative STEM+Arts teaching approach
