Swan(sea) Song – personal research during my six years at Swansea ... and bey...
Dfc
1. In the 1st meeting the concept of DFC was shown to us and we also saw some inspirational videos.
were there was a small kid who was trying to help the people held at the traffic jam due to a big log,
in spite being small he still tries to move that log to clear the traffic and seeing that other children
follows and then others help which ultimately overcome the problem. This opened our eyes and
made us think that we to can add certain value to society. We planned to do contribute something
for the society but the question that came across was what ,how, when many questions came up.
Then ‘Inaara’(Our Project Lead) told that we will divide into 4 groups and present our ideas and
whose ever is the best we will implement that. The ideas which we came through are as follows.
deforestation
recycling
traffic rules
smoking
speed limit while driving
conservation of electricity
These were the topics we came up with as these were so many we decided to present and vote
so that we can work towards the common goal .Finally after all presented their own ideas we
decided to work on “conservation on energy.” This was exciting and will have many things to
do.
In the next meeting we had to bring on our own plans and any other form
how we are going to carry of this project .How we can make people aware about our project
which is based on energy conservation. Then we need to decide where we need to do and how
we need to do there were so many questions we started listing down things we can do related
to the topic. We were then divided into two groups and were told that we are two state
governments, now how would you work towards this project. We listed down certain pointers as
follows.
1. solar appliances (but then we thought it would be difficult in flats as we have all the flat
system so thought that we can use solar heaters )
2. Stop using lights during day.
3. Decrees the amount of units that we use like monitoring monthly electricity units use.
4. Using lights (CFLs) that consume fewer units.
5. Should not leave the mobile charger ON when not required.
6. Starting a group which focuses on conservation of natural resources
7. Make sure lights and fans use when it is required.
All these point we discussed to spread as an initial and started to do from our home itself. As it is
said “Charity begins at home.” Now we had to decide where we will do this we and decided to
choose not only our society but the whole locality, we had around 100 shops nearby we thought we
will spread this word first to them and then to others. Also ‘Shreya’ and ‘Rizvan’ came up with a nice
thought we will give a token or a pluck card to be put beside Switch Boards which tells to switch off
the light when not in use. This was a terrific idea and it was completely accepted by whole group.
Then ‘Asma’ and ‘Ali’ were given the task of designing it and they did a wonderful job. The card
which they designed is enclosed.
2. In our next meeting we thought we are ready with the project but then n how are we
going to take it forward as we thought that this is not the only project we are working on there a lot
to come. Then we decided let us give a name to our group which will remain throughout. There were
many names which we came up with as “ECO-TEENS “,“Intelligent Einstein’s” and “Change Makers.”
Then finally we came to a consensus and gave a new form to our club. Now we were called
ECOTEENS – Change Makers.
Slowly but steadily we were moving towards our D-Day which was very important and had
to chalk down the action plan as to how are we going to execute it. This is when we realized that the
job would be half done when we would be done with the action plan. Plan was then chalked down
point by point and there were so many discussions as to how it would be carried out. Finally after
pointing out some points we decided that we would go and interview people, ask for the problems
we would be facing and making them aware about the facts and figures how to save electricity.
Then we divided ourselves into four groups, each of which were going in different
directions so that we can cover more area and make people aware about the project we are working
on and how it can be helpful to them if not now may be in future.
As we were looking out for the possibilities where can we save electricity ‘Asna’ ,’Zainil’ and
‘Rahil’ came across a situation where in there was good sunlight but still the street lights were ON
which were not required and that put a sense of purpose in us that we are doing a very good job by
making people aware and educating them to conserve electricity.
Then arrived the D-day when we actually went out on a survey cum campaign regarding
saving our environment with a starting little step of saving electricity.
We got mixed responses regarding what we reviewed after the campaign was done. By far
it is one of the best feelings some said and some were very proud of the work we were doing and
making a difference not only in our society but also outside it. There were many incidents such as
couple of shop keepers who were impressed with us and switched OFF their lights because they
were not required but there were some people who really didn’t care about it. We thought to move
on and as this is a small step we took in changing our environment and would like to cater people
who are supportive of the cause.
Also preparing video why we need to save electricity and will soon be published on Face book and
other social networking sites so that we can target more people and spread this word.
Planning to send the mailers to our fiend and would circulate as a chain.
This is just a starting we need to work more on this and we would surely do that because we are
ECOTEENS-Change Makers.
