3. Why Sulekha was called Bholi ?
When she was ten months old, she had fallen off the cot on her head and
perhaps it had damaged some part of her brain. That was why she remained
a backward child and came to be known as Bholi.
At birth, the child was very fair and pretty. But when she was two
years old, she had an attack of small-pox. Only the eyes were saved,
but the entire body was permanently disfigured by deep black pockmarks.
Little Sulekha could not speak till she was five, and when at
last she learnt to speak, she stammered. The other children often
made fun of her and mimicked her.
4. Family Background of Bholi
Ramlal had seven children — three sons and four daughters, and the
youngest of them was Bholi. It was a prosperous farmer’s household
and there was plenty to eat and drink. All the children except Bholi
were healthy and strong. The sons had been sent to the city to study in
schools and later in colleges. Of the daughters, Radha, the eldest, had
already been married. The second daughter Mangla’s marriage had also
been settled, and when that was done, Ramlal would think of the third,
Champa.
5. Learning
Till this part we come to know that for a girl to survive in this
society she has to be beautiful , intelligent , healthy and
strong. What will be their future ? Their future is that they
will be married off to another house where they will work in
the house till their death .They are not allowed to study and
work independently.

6. New Hope, New Life
Once the Tehsildar asked Ramlal to send Bholi the primary school that
was opened in their village.
Bholi started to go the school and years passed and she got
educated. One day Ramla; accepted Bishamber’s proposal . Bholi’s
mother considered Bholi to be very lucky as she is going to get
Bishamber as her bridegroom who has a big shop, a house of his own.
But he was much older that Bholi. Moreover the children from his first
wife are quite grown up .
7. The Wedding Day
On the day of marriage when Bishamber saw Bholi’s face full of
pock marks. He gave a condition for the marriage, that he will
marry Bholi only when Ramlal will give him five thousand rupees.
But then Bholi refused to marry Bishamber a
greedy and contemptible coward as husband. People started to
tell her shameless, ugly. But Bholi did not care.
8. Bholi ‘s bold move
As said earlier Bholi refused to marry Bishamber. When are
father asked her what will be her future as no one is going to
marry her. She camly replied she will serve her father and
mother in their old age and will tach in the same school where
she find a new hope and a new life
9. Change that can be noticed in Bholi
We can see education brings a massive change in Bholi’s character. She
believed in herself , she was confident, she did not care what others say,
she proved that a girl’s future can never be just marrying someone and
work in the household as she said she will serve her father and mother in
their old age and will teach in the same school where she find a new hope
and new life.
