Cd pressing
1. Title - Brief Introduction & Benefits of CD Pressing
Content:
CD Pressing relates to professionally manufactured
CDs you would expect to buy from retail stores etc.
The discs are literally pressed, or stamped rather
than the data simply burned as you would on your
CD writer. From original master, an image is taken
and etched onto glass via laser to create a glass
master. From this a stamper is taken which is used
to press the discs.
Because each CD pressing is from the same source
all are identical unlike CDs that are burned (CD-Rs).
With various disc errors that occur for each burn
onto each CD-R there can never be 100% assurance
that all will read in every drive but the pressed CD
provides 100% compatibility. It is for this reason a
duplicated CD-R can never be considered as a
genuine retail quality product.
The layer containing the data on a pressed CD is
directly beneath the printed surface (top) of the disc
rather than the underside of the CD (silver side).
This also acts as a protection against damage
whereas the burned CD-R carries the data on the
underside of the actual CD and therefore more open
and unprotected. A light scratch on a CD-R is more
likely to render the disc un-readable but the pressed
CD will be far more tolerant. Unfortunately they are
2. not indestructible as was portrayed when CDs first
came about however with good care taken there is
no reason for them not to last a lifetime. The number
of times played will not cause them to wear, unlike
the vinyl or cassettes previously and the
reproduction quality will never falter.
For audio CDs, there are some that believe a pressed
CD actually sounds better than the same program
played from a burned CD-R. This technically is not
possible because the actual audio being digital will be
identical. Purity of playback however could differ due
to errors on the discs. Much in the same way as
turntables had tracking to make sure the stylus
followed the “grooves”, each CD drive has error
correct capability. Audio players are not so tolerant
as ROM drives generally and therefore a burned CD-
R which is likely to have more errors than a pressed
CD would not provide the optimum read.
CD pressing is very different to CD burning or
duplicating and it is important to remember it is the
only way to produce genuine retail quality product
for sale.
