BIO SUMMARY
My name is D Brady Nelson, and I am a neoAustrian economist currently looking for full-time or paid
project work opportunities in free market think tanks, media or politics. I am an economic regulation
expert with the Heartland Institute of Chicago IL USA, and have been since 2010. I have written dozens
of freelance articles for them, mainly on energy and environment but also on budget and tax, health care
and education. I can add immediate value in the policy areas of budgets, economics, money, regulation,
tax and public utilities. I can legally work in AUS, NZ, UK and the USA.
I have also done freelance writing, speaking, media and other work for (alphabetical order): Mises
Institute USA; Mises Institute Canada; Crime Prevention Research Center; GradeGov; Safe Worlds TV;
Conservative Political Action Conference; Liberal National Party; Terabit Media; MacIver Institute;
Wisconsin Manufacturing & Commerce; Wisconsin Policy Research Institute; Fox Valley Initiative;
Utility Week; Major Energy Users Association; Institute of Public Affairs; Energy Users Association of
Australia; and Crolls Media Monitoring. I have a regulation reform principles booklet due to be published
this year, as well as a public utilities reform booklet due to be published next year by the Institute of
Economic Affairs. Also in the pipeline is possible freelance work for (alphabetical order): American
Action Forum; Bruges Group; Cato Institute; Center for Freedom and Prosperity; Cobden Centre;
Competitive Enterprise Institute; Independent Institute; Mercatus Center; Reason Foundation; Right
Wisconsin; and others. I am also actively looking for a book publisher re free market myths & realities.
My main skills and experience are applied micro-economics (eg competition, cost benefit, finance,
industrial, government, legal, managerial, markets, pricing, regulatory, strategy, etc), as well as some
applied macro-economics (eg business cycles, money, public finance, statistics, etc). I also have readily
transferable skills in (alphabetical order) advocacy, analysis, auditing, business development, compliance,
consulting, due diligence, editing, peer review, people and project management (between 2 and 12 staff),
planning, radio, research, training, TV, valuation, and writing. I also have significant experience with
most of the economic price regulated infrastructure industries (especially public ‘natural monopoly’
utilities) in AUS, NZ, UK and the USA, including communications, energy, transport and water.
My prime areas of differentiation are in my: very wide knowledge base of economics and related matters
like policy, law, history and ethics, particularly as it pertains to business and consumer valuation, pricing
and production, and government intervention in these; ability to critically apply and positively
communicate that knowledge to almost any person and in any situation; and in so doing, to both think
‘inside’ (eg mainstream Neoclassical micro-economics and Keynesian macro-economics) and ‘outside the
box’ (eg Austrian micro-economics and macro-economics), and take action with passion, entertainment
and empathy to bring it all together.
I am originally from Milwaukee WI USA, but have lived and worked most of my adult life in AUS
(mainly Brisbane QLD and Sydney NSW). I have also worked in: Canberra ACT, Darwin NT, Melbourne
VIC and Perth WA AUS; Auckland NZ; London ENG, Stirling SCO and Edinburgh SCO UK; Chicago
IL, Madison WI and Washington DC USA; as well as Canada, India, Malaysia, South Africa and Sweden.

THINK TANK VISION
Over time I intend to start a new think tank (or a new area within an existing think tank) devoted to
smaller government (including public utilities deregulation), mainly but not exclusively from the
perspective of the Austrian School of economics, ethics, history, law and methodology. In the meantime,
I plan on starting an Austrian economics society (or similar) by the middle of this year.
In a ‘nut shell’, my think tank vision includes:
• using Austrian School economics, ethics, history and law to better help win ‘minds’ and ‘hearts’
(with greater empathy, positivity and reality) to continually shrink Big Government over time;
• understanding that Big Government regulation and deregulation has largely been underserved by
think tanks and others, as well as being still in its relative academic infancy (Austrian, Public Choice,
Transaction Costs, etc);
• understanding that Big Government owned and/or dominated public utilities have even more so been
underserved by think tanks and others, as well as being still in its relative academic infancy when it
comes to deregulation as opposed to regulation, despite its long history, being more quantifiable, and
impacting virtually every household and business;
• leveraging my practical experience in and around public utilities, regulation and deregulation, along
with my ever increasing knowledge of Austrian and mainstream economics, ethics, history and law;
• drawing upon neglected and ‘eye-opening history’, such as that of ‘not so’ natural monopolies;
• creating new economic frameworks for regulation and deregulation over time (more so qualitative
than quantitative), that build on existing Austrian and Neoclassical ones (noting that many of the
latter’s ones unintentionally better describe Big Government than free markets);
• developing and evolving ‘catchy’ and ‘easy-to-understand’ communication approaches and tools, such
as my realities, principles or ‘Catch-22s’ (or 10-for-22) of Big Government, Utilities and Liberty.
The 10-for-22 of Big Government
#1 Liberty and property are the keys to wealth, responsibility and charity … not Big Government
#2 Prices and information are best created and discovered in free market exchange … not through
Big Government interventions
#3 Progress is driven by entrepreneurs taking-on uncertainty with innovation and capital … not
through Big Government interventions
#4 Rule-of-law (eg decentralized common law) tends to reduce uncertainty and help solve problems
… Big Government ruled-by-law tends not to
#5 Many Big Government interventions try to solve problems created by previous such
interventions
#6 Regardless of intentions, most Big Government interventions tend to benefit the few at the
expense of the many
#7 Most Big Government burdens are not just the proverbial ‘tip of the iceberg’, but are unseen,
deep and large … not the compliance costs on business, but the unintended negative consequences
on the economy
#8 The current stock as well as the ongoing flow of Big Government interventions needs to be
slowed, stopped and reversed
#9 More and better Big Government reform tools are needed beyond cost-benefit-analysis,
including learning from non-crony businesses and heterodox economics, both domestic and foreign
#10 Better understanding and more passion will be required from top-down politicos and thought-
leaders and especially from bottom-up families, consumers, businesses, volunteers, voters &
secceeders
The little known history of public utilities such as electricity and gas, in the US at least, teaches that
there was plenty of effective competition prior to the less effective competitors lobbying for market
protection regulation in exchange for economic oversight regulation. In fact, the regulation of such so
called natural monopolies started decades before the theory and main economic justification was created.
Such regulation first started federally with rail in the 1870s, and at state level with utilities from 1907 in
Wisconsin. The most modern forms of utility regulation were much later adopted in the UK from the
1980s, and Australia and elsewhere from the 1990s. The economic paradox is, even if a public utility
monopoly were indeed natural – ie could produce at a lower total cost than all others, actual and potential
– it would still not be in need of all of the other types of regulations, intentionally or unintentionally,
preventing entry and rivalry in these markets and even those upstream and downstream as well.
