Alexander the Great conquered Turkey in 334 B.C. through a surprise attack. According to legend, he also undid the impossible Gordian Knot in Gordium, Turkey that had been tied by the wealthy King Midas. The knot's undoing was said to signify that whoever could undo it would go on to rule Asia.
