Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya has urged health
institutions to embrace Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) programmes to ensure staff are
continually updating their skills.
The minister said this recently during a graduation
ceremony held at Kasama School of Nursing of 160
Nurses who completed a three (3) months CPD course.
Participants were drawn from Muchinga, Luapula and
Northern Provinces.
The minister noted that CPD helps health professionals
to be competent as they would be up-to-date with the
ever-changing technologies and procedures in the
health fraternity.
Dr. Chilufya has since directed professional and regulatory bodies under the Ministry of Health to entrench
Continuous Professional Development -CPD- programmes in their institutions.###

workshop for final year registered nurse and midwife students.
The 99 registered nurse and midwife students recently completed their training and
are expected to graduate within the third quarter of this year.
The aim of the workshop is to develop management and supervisory skills among
nurses and midwives before they start practicing.
The workshop commenced on 27-30th June 2017, covering essential topics such as
healthcare team building, Leadership and supervision, Emergency preparedness,
Nursing and law, Communication, Financial procedures and regulations and
Conditions of service for the public service, among others.

ICN and Jhpiego partner to
increase capacity of nurses
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) and Jhpiego have
embarked on a new nursing development programme to
facilitate collaboration in areas of public health through nursing
workforce development and capacity building.
The two organisations that share the common goals of
improving public healthcare services, empowering women and
achieving universal health coverage โare joining forces to create
a project that will connect nurses globally to exchange
expertise.Jhpiego and ICN are well positioned to work together
to respond to the global nursing workforce shortage and
empower nurses for a variety of emerging evidence-based roles
needed to meet the sustainable development goals and targets for
universal health coverage.
The letter of collaboration recently signed at ICNโs Congress in
Barcelona, Spain, by Dr Frances Hughes and Dr Leslie Mancuso,
President and CEO of Jhpiego, lays down the building blocks of
a commitment to position nurses in advanced practice roles;
build nurse capacity to assume leadership roles; explore and
create innovative community-focused nurse-led care models; and
advanced nurse-led research.
The aim of the agreement is to develop and implement joint
advocacy and lobbying programmes to support public health
initiatives, especially in low and middle-income countries.
