Thoughts About the Future of Art in the 21st Century (1997)
Zoo Presentation
1. Summaries of each group member’s presentation(write what
you’re going to say)
● Intro: Whitney
○ Introduce group members
○ For this assignment we were partnered with the Akron Zoo and
were tasked with coming up with an idea for a new zoo exhibit
to replace the current Jellyfishexhibit.
○ Our conceptfor this projectis “Beneath the Surface: Animals
that Burrow”. This would give zoo visitors the opportunity to
discoverand explore the underground community of burrowing
animals that use all of their senses to survive.
Key Points:
● #1 – Animals burrow in all types of climates and ecosystems.
● #2 – The effects of human activity on burrowing animals
Deanna Moore will now review the Animals selected forthe exhibit and how
they are grouped by habitat
Deanna (2 min):
● We decided to group the animals in each exhibit by like habitat, some
of the animals live in multiple habitats, but we chose the ones that
had similarities. These animals however, will not be placed in the
same tanks. The five exhibits are Desert, Water, Forest,Grasslands,
and Fields/Lawns. The animals in the desertexhibit are: the Mohave
Ground Squirrel, Chilean Rose Tarantula, Camel Spider,Badger, and
Burrowing Owl. In the water exhibit, the Northern Pike Snake, the
forestwill be Mexican Burrowing Snake, EmperorScorpion, and
Wombats. In the grasslands exhibit, there will be the Naked Mole Rat,
Spotted Burrowing Frog, and European Rabbits. Finally, in the
fields/lawn exhibit will be the TrapdoorSpiderand Pocket Gopher
2. Collin Jones will now discuss the Interactive portion of exhibit
Collin (2 min):
Interactive Idea- Allow Zoo visitors to feelthe types of
environments these animals burrow in by creating a “burrow
wall” that can help zoo visitors identify differenttypes of animal
burrows and actually reach in the simulated burrow to pull out
the animal that occupies eachspace.
Another interactive zone would be the touch tank that currently
houses stingrays. We would fill the tank with half sand, half dirt,
and differenttypes of materials that are harmful to animals that
burrow. Items like sodacans and plastic bags can be carried
into the burrow by the animals and can be harmful to their
health and in some cases fatal.
These types of tunnel slides would be used to simulate
underground tunnels that animals use to burrow.
Interactive play areas with slides and materials that simulate grass
and other ground materials can provide a fun way to educate
both children and adults on the different types of animals that
burrow and how to avoid disturbing their habitats.
Claudio will now discuss the Redesignof current exhibit
Claudio (2 min):
Re-designconcept for the current exhibit:
The redesign for this projectwould include new lighting, flooring, walls and the
overall layout for the space. The currentexhibit is an underwater theme and
makes you feel as though you are exploring the depths of the ocean. Our new
exhibit would allow you to go underground with the various animals we have
selected and give the Akron Zoo visitors the chance to explore underground and
underwater habitats that are normally hidden away from humans. With earth
3. tones, neutral colors, textured flooring and wall accents, visitors can see and feel
what is it like for these animals that burrow in a world beneath the surface.
David will now discuss the Exhibit layout and $1,000 budget
David (2 min):
What we recommend to use the United Way grantfor
$1,000 budget-
Commissiona local professionalartist to design and install a mural
or metal plaque that acts as the welcoming point and message
board. The piece will not only be aesthetically beautiful to look
at but also function as a warm welcome to discoverthe
underground community “Beneath the Surface:Animals That
Burrow”.
Several local artists that have expressedinterest in this project
and utilizing local talent is a great way for the zoo to become
more involved in the community
Whitney Davis will now discuss the Implementation Plan and
Akron Zoo project budget
Whitney (conclusion,1 min):
● Conclusion: Whitney-
● The Akron Zoo’s goal for the completionof the new exhibit to be open
