My Personal Philosophy of Special Education

My Personal Philosophy of Special Education As educators, we need a foundation for why we want to teach, where students with different disabilities
fit in that foundation, a rationale for how we teach, and a principle that keeps us striving to be the best educators we can be. The purpose of this essay
is to point out what I believe the foundation, student location, rationale, and principle are for why I want to become a teacher.

Think back to when these children were deemed uneducable and place in institutions; we have come a long way since then. The only way to
continue moving forward is by educating ourselves and sharing that information with others. As the world and society change around us we cannot
expect our teaching methods to stay the same. I will have an open mind to trying new ways to be a more effective teacher for my students.
Knowledge is power and that power is what we, as educators, need to ensure that every child is receiving the best education we are able to provide.
As educators, I believe we need to continue our own education through research, articles, journals, books, and experience on ways to further academic
and social growth in students. I believe with teamwork, on the part of administrators and educators, we will be able to accomplish more for children
with disabilities. Collaboration and co–teaching are ways that we can make the learning environment successful for all students. I will willingly and
cooperatively work with anyone that can be of assistance to the child with disabilities, especially including providing information to their parents
/guardians. Involving the parents will help complete the team working for the betterment of children with disabilities. This team needs to have open
communication lines and a willingness to accept each others'

Philosophy on Education Education entails individual human development in the cognitive, emotional, creative and social areas. All children are
entitled to a free education regardless of race, cultural background or handicaps. For education to be an effective part of the students life, the student

There are many philosophies to consider when preparing to teach. The ones I wish to incorporate into my curriculum are those of Jean–Jacques
Rousseau, who believed that everyone posses in the depth of our being certain feelings and passions, and when these feelings are first shielded
from polluted influences in our culture, and then liberated and allowed to control our conduct, may we posses true understanding and virtue. I also
like those of Progressivism which is respect for individuality, relevant to the needs and interests of students. Along with these two theories I think
educators need to include some perennialism which is a general, liberal, humanistic approach because we all need the basics and then build upon
those to discover who we are and what we want to gain from education and life. I believe we have come to a point in our society where we have
lost track of traditional American virtues and what our country was founded on. My wish as an educator would to be able to bring back some of the
back to basics approach into the public school system. For teachers to really be effective we should choose the best of all philosophies, and combine
them into a curriculum that workds for everyone?s needs and abilities. A teacher who is able to adapt their teaching techniques for each individual

My Philosophy of Education is closely related to what the Essentialists and Perennialists believe. Like the Essentialists, I believe there should be a back
to the basics approach to teaching. The curriculum should focus on subjects such as writing, reading, history, science, and math. These are essentials
that all students should know. There should be mastery of material of the essential subjects before the students move on to the next grade level. The
curriculum should be rigorous and the standards should be set high. The high standards that are set for the students should strengthen the student's
intellect and enhance their moral qualities.

Most of the time, the teacher should stay away from the student's interests that interfere with academic cirriculum.
Student's interests should be widely expressed in extra curriculum activities.
The teacher should ultimately decide a lot of the curriculum based on the needs of each student. This brings me to the part of Progressivism that I
believe to be very influential in the way students learn and how they increase their level of knowledge and skills. Students should be grouped by
abilities. When I observed a 4th grade class this semester students were working at their own levels and with other peers at the same level. The
students were working on the exact same subject matter, but the level of difficulty was unique to the individual. The desks were set up in small
groups for the students to work together on material. The students took tests every few months in order for the teacher to examine their level of
learning and place them with the appropriate group and correct learning material. The students improved overall from test to test. No two students are
alike. Working at their own level and with others at the same level increase their ability to learn and increase their level of knowledge to where it
should be.
The students should learn to think critically, hypothetically, analytically, and creatively. During the creative part is where there should be an

As I begin my education for becoming a teacher, I am beginning to make decisions on things such as how I would like my teaching style to be, ways
to deal with discipline problems, and how I would like my classroom to be set up.
However, I cannot put my ideas into one philosophy. I feel that using many styles of teaching is better than just using one. Some students may learn
better with one style of teaching while others may learn better with another. The teaching philosophies I can best relate to are realism, pragmatism, and
idealism.

When students arrive in the mornings, I will have a small review assignment on the board for them to work on until class begins. There will also be a
set order for teaching the different subjects. Not having big changes in their daily routine should help the students feel more comfortable and help keep
control in the classroom.
I will use involvement in activities to keep the children interested in learning. A field trip, group activity, or play that is related to a subject we are
covering will be very educational and motivational for the students. Anything that keeps them involved will keep them interested as well. Like the
Idealists, I will encourage the children to challenge themselves to learn more and make better grades.
When dealing with discipline problems I will use the idealistic, realistic, and pragmatic philosophies. Rules and punishments for the classroom will be
established the first day of school and posted on the walls. I will deal with discipline problems in the classroom, using the idealist approach, sending
the students to the principal's office as a last resort. Punishment for breaking rules will be pulling a card or writing their name on the board, which
lowers their deportment grade for the day and takes away part of their recess. Also instead of just punishing the students, I will try to help them solve

Progressivism was part of a social and political movement in the United States between 1880 and 1920 (Gutek, 2009). Progressive education
coincides with my belief that young children need to interact with their environment to nurture their natural curiosity and creativity. Progressive
education allows the teacher to focus on the development of the whole child, which is critical since all developmental domains are interrelated.
Children do not learn nor do they develop in isolation; therefore, the learning environment should support learning across all domains. For instance,
when a child moves from crawling to walking new experiences open up for the child, their physical ability affects their cognitive ability as they
venture out to explore areas of their environment that were limited to crawling. Both experimentalism and progressivism coincide with my belief that
young children are active learners. These philosophies support my belief that children are critical thinkers and problem solvers as they actively
attempt to make sense of the world through exploration. Furthermore, these types of ideologies correspond to my belief that the social and cultural
context is relevant to learning. As children attempt to make sense of their world through their individual experience, they begin to notice how aspects

I am twenty–eight years old, and have only decided to become a teacher within the past two years. I have always wanted to help people in some

Through all of these encounters I have had with children in the past, the primary experience that has developed upon my views of the nature of

To me knowledge and the acquiring of knowledge is not just one aspect set in stone with only one path leading to its attainment. Knowledge has
various aspects to it, and since each individual has various aspects to them the gaining of knowledge is obtained in a variety of ways being specific
to the needs of the individual. Knowledge is both relative and absolute. Certain types of knowledge can be taught to an individual, while other types of
knowledge can be discovered. We are taught certain truths in life, and we discover truths on the basis of personal exploration of the knowledge that we

The overall purpose of education goes beyond exposing students to and giving them knowledge. The teacher must possess the ability to enable the

these varying philosophies. Each of these philosophies have their strengths and weaknesses and have their positives and negatives in different

This philosophy may teach children to read, write, and do arithmetic, but it will also teach them to detest school and dislike learning.
To correspond these complaints specifically to literacy learning, students will only learn how to read and how to write. They will not know why to
read or write. Nor will they learn what to read or write. Like said above, they will not learn to love the creativity of writing nor the excitement of
reading.
Behaviorism is the idea that behavior is learned and because of that all behavior can be unlearned and new behaviors learned in its place.
Behaviorism views development as a continuos process in which children play a relatively passive role. Behaviorists assume that the only things that
are real are the things we can see and observe. We cannot see the mind, but we can see how people act, react and behave. What people do, not what
they think or real, is the object of study. Behavior is the essence of a person.
I do not so much disagree with the general ideas of this theory. Behavior does impact learning and much can be learned about a child through their
behavior. Also, behaviorism has developed many excellent means of discipline and classroom management. However, the behavior is not the child. I

It seems that everyone has a different opinion of what education should be and why it is important. In this paper, I will address the philosophy I

Now let's take a look at the overall purpose of education. Education is the process of knowledge being given to those previously unfamiliar with a
certain matter. It lays a foundation for the future of the students, and it helps them to prepare for careers and for life in general. However, it is my
opinion that education is not only a way to prepare one for the future, but it is also a way to support growth in the way a student thinks, acts and
feels. Once a general border of knowledge is put forth, I think students feel encouraged to try and gain more. They will yearn for more information
if it has been previously taught to them in a way that they can understand and feel enthusiastic about. I hope that once I become a teacher, I can give
students that desire to learn. I want to make a difference in young lives, and help model them into the people that they are destined to become. I want
them to be eager to learn and excited for their futures. I hope that they will be able to not only accomplish tasks related to basic scholarly subject
material, but also have knowledge of concepts needed for life after their schooling is over. I want to lay the groundwork for them to become

My classroom would have more of an "at home" structure. This would enable students to feel comfortable and provide an easy going environment. I
want students to feel at ease and comfortable with asking questions. If you think about it, school is their second home; therefore shouldn't it be a
positive atmosphere? Bulletin boards would display students work and show progression throughout the year. I also like interactive bulletin boards in
which the kinesthetic learning style children can work. These are self check boards so that it wouldn't take away from instructional time. If I am in a
school where technology is available, then I would use PowerPoint presentation rather than an overhead projector. It allows more creativity to
maintain student's attention. Patience is one major aspect of an effective teacher. If teachers don't get irate and handles discipline calmly, then they
win the struggle. I also do not believe in embarrassing a child or "putting them on the spot". I would speak to the child in conference about
misbehavior. My philosophy on discipline leans more toward positive reinforcement. I would focus on good behavior and use a lot of praise because
this sets an example to the others. Teachers sometimes forget about the students that are doing what they are supposed to do and those do not get any

If a junior high or high school student would get caught cheating on a test they would be given a zero. This is considered a traditional approach to
discipline.
The text book would be used frequently in the class room. The text books would be the main form of information for the students. Movies and
pictures that relate to the subject being discussed would also be used to help the students visualize what was going on. The students would be
pushed to discuss the subject during class. The atmosphere would be set up so that students whom have questions or a comment would be able to do
so without mockery or agitation. This would be done by opening the floor up for discussion. I would control the content matter so that no one would
be made fun of and the discussion would be clean. I would show my leadership by doing and saying nothing that I would not want the students to do
or stay. I would try to lead by example.
Educational reform is a touchy subject, but everything could use improving. You can always get better at something and sometimes you must change
to become better. I do not believe that testing should be the only way to place students. Some students do not test as well as others. I believe that
