Usability Test for SneakerBarDetroit.com
Test Preparation
To prepare for this usability test, I made sure to sit on the right side of the of the living
room couch that faces directly at the TV and is parallel to the front door. My roommates had the
TV on playing the hit TV show “Good Girls” on Netflix. I decided to put on my headphones and
listen to Spotify as I did these tests so I wouldn’t be distracted by the show. I used my school
laptop that was connected to our United Fiber internet connection. To access the website, I used
the Google Chrome browser since that’s the only way I access any website for my classes or to
shop online.
For task number one I needed to find out what the most popular pair of Air Jordan’s
were. First, I tried to go through the “BRANDS” tab by clicking on the “AIR JORDAN” button.
From there I changed the filter to show the most popular, but it wasn’t giving me what I was
looking for, so took a different approach. I then went to the search bar and typed “most popular
air jordans”. As I was looking through the articles, I came across one called “The True Story
Behind Banned Jordans”. Now typically I wouldn’t have considered this based on the title, but I
decided to investigate it anyways. The article was published back in December 2020. The article
talked about a Michael Jordan’s Jordan 1s he wore in his rookie years that the NBA had banned
from wearing, but he wore them anyways. In fact, this created a major craze in the sneaker
Holtman 2
world. After reading the article, I have determined that the Jordan 1s are the most popular type of
Air Jordan’s because they were banned from the NBA in the 1980s.
For task number 2, I followed the instructions to find out if Kareem Abdual-Jabbar had
his own brand of sneakers or not. Instantly I went straight for the search bar. As I kept typing in
the name, I kept misspelling it every time. Finally, I decided to just type in the word “Kareem”
into the search bar just to see what would happen. To my surprise, I had some articles appear,
except they weren’t about Kareem Abdual-Jabbar. In fact, the first three articles that popped up
talked about Kareem “Biggs” Burke and his different shoes. I scrolled through the page and was
really finding was I was looking for, so I decided to hit Ctrl + F and searched the word Jabbar.
Only one article came up with Kareem Abdual-Jabbar’s name titled “Adidas Crazy 8 “Kareem
Abdual Jabbar the Blueprint”. Although, the first thing I noticed about the article was that the
picture was removed from the page, so that would explain why I must have skipped over it. I
read through the rest of the article and found an attached link to adidas.com where you could
purchase the shoes, but I never clicked on the link. Towards the end of the article it should that
there were supposed to be more blueprints for the shoe, but there taken down from the website,
leaving a bunch of negative space. I went back up the search bar and then typed in “jabbar” and
only three articles popped up. The most recent post dated back to January of 2015. After looking
through both articles, I have determined that Kareem Abdual-Jabbar has only two sneaker
designs.
Task number three consisted of trying to find the name and meaning behind the self-
lacing Nike shoes from the move “Back to the Future”. Once again, I went straight to the search
bar and search “Back to the Future”. Two pages worth of articles loaded on my screen, but it
didn’t take me long to find the first part of this task. I noticed on the second article a picture of
Holtman 3
the shoes that Marty wore in the movie. I then looked over at the title and right below that was
part of the first sentence of the article that called these shoes the Nike Mag. I clicked on the
article and as I read through the article, I noticed that there really wasn’t a definition of what the
word “mag” stood for, so kept searching. I search through the entire first page of articles and
didn’t have any luck at all until I got to the second page. On the second page, I found an article
titled “UPDATE: 2015 Nike Mag to be Auctioned?” that was dated on October 21, 2015. Within
the article I didn’t find the meaning behind the word “mag” until I noticed an imbedded video by
a guy named Jacques Slade. I clicked the play button and he talked about the entire history of the
shoe. In fact, he even mentioned that the word “mag” stood for “magnetized” which honestly
makes sense if you think about it. Slade goes on to the mention that the shoes were “magnetized”
was to help Marty stay on the hover board. This was one of the harder and longer tasks I had to
complete. This task took roughly around 15-20 minutes.
For the last task, I had to search for the name Tinker Hatfield. I remember reading his
name in a couple of the article back from the third task. Just like all the previous tasks, I went
back up to the search bar at the top of the page and search the name “Tinker Hatfield”. Once the
page finally loaded with all the articles, I immediately checked all the dates that were published.
Right away I noticed that the first article was dated on June 19, 2019 which seemed to be the
most recent post. The article was titled “Nike Air Zoom Down Rock N7 Designed by Tinker
Hatfield” which talked about Tinker’s new designs for the Air Zoom Down Rocks and the Zoom
Heritage. Within the article it talked about how Tinker’s design was a collaboration with the
music artist Taboo. From what I gathered from this article as well as the other articles is that
Tinker Hatfield is a very well-known designer for Nike. I’ve got to say, he is extremely talented
when it comes to designing a shoe. In fact, some of these designs really captured my attention
Holtman 4
and made me want to buy them, but I’m in college and really don’t want to spend over $100 for a
pair of shoes. This was by far the easiest task to complete because I already had seen Tinker’s
name within the third task so spelling it wasn’t an issue. Plus, he was mentioned a lot in the
articles about the Nike Mag.

TV. Not very tech savvy when it
comes to researching
Doesn’t really speak as she reads.
Tends to bite her nails as she reads
through articles. Very tech savvy
when it comes to researching.
Tester #1 Details: Spencer McQueen
Spencer McQueen is a 20-year-old male you who used to be a full-time college but
decided to take the semester off. Spencer has very little to no knowledge of the sneaker industry.
He spends a lot of time on social media and other streaming services. The reason I chose Spencer
as a test subject is because he knew nothing about SneakerBarDetroit.com and he loves to
sneaker shop online. In fact, he personally owns eight different pairs of sneakers ranging from
Holtman 5
Converses to Nike Air Force 1s. Another reason I chose Spencer as my test subject way due to
the fact that I went to high school with him, and he was never a tech savvy type of person when
it came to researching. In other words, he wants to find the answer he’s looking instantly
otherwise he starts to lose interest. On the bright side though, Spencer was very communicative
throughout each task which was very beneficial for this experiment and helped shed some light
on some issues within the site.
Environment for Tester #1
Location of Test: For this test, I met with Spencer at his house in person. We sat on his
living room couch where he does the majority of his browsing and streaming.
Physical Environment: The living room consisted of two full size couches, a recliner, a
coffee table and two flat screen TVs. The room was mainly lit by the strands of Christmas lights
that wrapped around the room along with the two TVs and corner lamp. The TV on the right was
showing a college basketball game on ESPN while the one on the left had the NBA 2K21 video
game pulled up from the Play Station. The TV’s became a distraction for Spencer because he
was always checking the scores of the two games. Plus, he also kept getting distracted by his
roommates that were cheering during the game while making dinner in the kitchen.
Technical Environment: For the usability test, he used his own personal HP laptop that
was connected to their Suddenlink network which crashed on us because there were so many
devices connected to it. To access the website, Spencer used the Google Chrome browser. Upon
opening the browser, I noticed that he only had two tabs open and they were both Nike.com
where he was designing his own custom sneakers. He did have to stop halfway through the
Holtman 6
second task, to plug in his laptop because it wasn’t fully charged. There weren’t any ad blockers
or other apps being used while performing the tasks at hand.
Tester #2 Details: Tiffany Bliley
Tiffany Bliley is a 32-year-old high school science teacher that also holds the titles of
head softball coach and assistant basketball coach. Much like Spencer, Tiffany doesn’t know a
lot sneaker industry or about Sneaker Bar Detroit. In fact, that’s only just one reason why I chose
her to be the second experiment. The other reason I chose her as a test subject was because she is
my cousin and I know that the only brand of shoes she wears is Nike. Even when she was in high
school, she wore nothing but Nike, especially when it came to playing basketball. Tiffany is a
very tech savvy person, so it really didn’t take her long to complete majority of the tasks at hand.
Environment for Tester #2
Location of Test: When conduction the usability test, I met her at our grandpa’s house
since she lives with him ever since our grandma passed in 2016. Majority of the time she does all
her browsing and schoolwork at the dining room table.
Physical Environment: With the dining room, there are 6 wooden chairs surrounding
the oval shaped table and she normally sits on the east side. She sat facing away from the TV that
was playing in the living room which did cause some distraction from time to time. To the right
of her sits a stack of chemistry exams. The room was lit by the small chandelier hanging from
the ceiling.
Technical Environment: To access the website, she used Google Chrome browser on
her personal HP laptop that was connected to the United Fiber network. When she first opened
the browser, I saw her click the minimized icon on the bottom of her screen. When the page
Holtman 7
finally opened, I noticed that there were at least twelve different tabs open which would make
sense since they were all presentations and homework for her students. Upon further inspection,
there weren’t any ad blockers or other applications being used just like Spencer’s.
Test Results
Initial Site Thoughts
Tester #1: The first thing that Spencer noticed was the images of the different shoes
which made him think it was e-commerce website so he could buy these shoes. He also wasn’t
very fond of the layout of the homepage. He kept repeating that, “it didn’t make any sense,” so
his attitude towards the website was already negative. Plus, as soon as he saw that the website
consisted of press releases and other news posts about the shoes, he disliked the website even
more.
Tester #2: Tiffany on the other hand liked the layout of the website. She stated that, “it
was well organized website.” She scrolled through all the different tabs and even red some of the
articles that were posted on the home page. She especially read the articles that delt with Nike.
As she was reading, she really didn’t say a lot about the site. She continued to click and explore
the site, but once she was finished, she stated that, “it seems like an interesting site, but it’s not
something that she would check out on a daily basis.” In fact, she stated that this would be a
website that some of her students would be interested in checking out to find the best shoes for
basketball.
Similarities and Differences: One of the biggest similarities that both testers did was
instantly click on the fourth square that said “shop now” which took them to the eBay e-
commerce site. They both weren’t fond of this because they both stated that, “it was misleading.”
Holtman 8
They also both agreed that there were too many ads that popped up which tended to be
distracting. In fact, there were times that they clicked on the ads on accident and get mad about
having to hit the backspace button at the top of the screen. As I stated earlier, Spencer was never
fond of the reading the articles because he mainly just wanted to see the pictures and know the
names of the shoe. Meanwhile, Tiffany didn’t mind reading the articles at all. Another difference
was that Spencer wasn’t fond of the layout because he said some of the navigation was too
confusing. Tiffany didn’t mind the navigation and thought it wasn’t too difficult.
Task #1: “You know that Air Jordans are popular, so you want to learn more. Determine the
most popular (not just the most recent) Air Jordans, according to Sneaker Bar Detroit and its
visitors.”
Summary of Both Testers:
Tester 1 Tester 2 Average
Average Satisfaction 3 2 2.5
Success Rate 100% 50% 50%
Tester #1 Completion Process:
Spencer started from the home page and went up to the navigation tool at the top of the
page. He proceeds to hover of the “BRANDS” tab and clicked on the “Air Jordans” drop down
menu option. From there he hit the button Ctrl + F and search the word “top”. His search came
up with fifteen different choices, but none of which gave him the answer he was looking for. He
then noticed the search bar and typed in “top jordans”. He began to scroll down the page until he
saw an article called “Top 10 Sneaker Releases of 2018” that was published on December 31,
2018 according to Sneaker Bar Detroit. After the article loaded, he went up and hit Ctrl + F once
again and searched “jordans”. He proceeds to click through until he saw the highest ranked
Holtman 9
Jordans. He then turned to me and point at the screen stated that the most popular Air Jordans
were the Union x Air Jordan 1 because it was ranked the third highest out the ten shoes listed. He
then proceeded to say that it was his final answer and he wasn’t going to change it. Now I’m not
100% sure if this is the correct answer or not due to the fact that this was published almost three
ago and the answer might be different. Overall, it took Spencer roughly five minutes to find this
answer, so I would give it a 100% success rate.
Tester #2 Completion Process:
Starting the home page, Tiffany noticed the search bar right way and entered “popular
jordans”. The first thing she did was scroll the bottom to see if the page would end or keep
going. To her surprise her search came up with three pages of articles that delt with popular Air
Jordans. She then proceeded to scroll back up to the top and scroll back through the articles
slowly. As she scrolled, she mentioned that the dates of the first five articles are all out of order
compared to the rest of the articles. For example, there was an article published in 2013 that was
before an article that was published in 2020. As she continued to scroll, she asked if she could
change the filters on her search. I told her to try and see if she could. She searched the entire
page and could not find the drop-down menu option that could adjust the filters. Annoyed by
inconvenience, she went back up to the search bar and typed “popular air jordans”. To her
surprise she found an article called, “Better “What the” Air Jordan: Air Jordan 4 or Air Jordan 5”
that was published in November of 2020. After reading the article, she concluded that the Air
Jordan 4 “What The” was the most popular based style and color of the shoe. As I stated earlier
for Spencer’s response, I’m not for sure if this is the correct answer or not. This task took almost
fifteen minutes to complete. On that note I would give this a 50% rate because she almost quit
doing the task since she was struggling to find the answer she wanted.
Holtman 10
Biggest Problem:
Both users didn’t get the same answer. Not to mention they both used different methods
to find their answers, but even at that it was still giving them troubles. Overall, the search bar
navigation was very unsuccessful for both users since they had to do multiple searches.
Alignment to Heuristics: Match between system and the real world.
For this heuristic the system needs to understand the user’s lingo when it comes to
searching certain words, phrases, or other concepts that the user is familiar with. As tester
number 1 went straight to the “BRANDS” tab which would be the best fit scenario here since it
gave the user access to Air Jordan articles. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, tester number 2 just used
the search bar and then tried to filter her searches but couldn’t. Meanwhile, tester number 1 used
the “Air Jordans” button under the “BRANDS” tab which allowed him to filter his searches, but
tester number 1 didn’t notice that, and tester number 2 never tried it.
Task #2: “Your favorite basketball player is Kareem Abdual-Jabbar. Determine whether or no
Abdual-Jabbar has his own sneaker designs.”
Summary of Both Testers:
Tester 1 Tester 2 Average
Average Satisfaction 1 1 1
Success Rate 0% 0% 0%
Tester #1 Completion Process:
First thing Spencer did go right back to the search bar and typed just typed the word
“kareem” because he figured it was easier to spell. Much to his surprise he didn’t find the answer
he was looking, which is exactly what happened to me. He went back to the search bar and tried
Holtman 11
“jabar”. As he hit the enter button, the screen just sat there loading for at least three minutes. By
this point he was starting to get a little irritated. When the page finally loaded, he scrolled
through his results, but the kept coming up with Jabari Parker. Now he was extremely irritated
and kept asking if he could just Google it. I told him he could only use this website and this
website only. He then four mar different spellings, but he wasn’t getting the results he was
looking for. Finally, he decided to give up because he couldn’t figure out the spelling. This task
went on for almost ten minutes, and since he wasn’t getting the answers he was looking for, I
would give this a 0% success rating
Tester #2 Completion Process:
The first thing Tiffany did when I presented her the task was look at me and said, “I have
no idea how to spell his name.” I proceeded to tell her to try her best and see what would happen.
She made her way to the search bar and tried the word “Jabar” which didn’t work. Next, she tried
the word “Jah Bar”, which didn’t work either. Much like Spencer, she was getting irritated. She
tried to ask me how to spell it and I told her I couldn’t assist her. After a couple more failed
attempts, she sat there and stared at the computer screen for a couple minutes. She then decided
to try using the “SNEAKER RELEASE DATES” navigation button. From there, she tried to Ctrl
+ F method to help with her search, but she still wasn’t getting any results. Finally, she decided
to call it quits and wanted to move on to the next task. She continued to say that, “this was a
ridiculous task because nobody knows how to spell his name perfectly.” Overall, this was a very
unsuccessful task.
Biggest Problem:
Holtman 12
The biggest problem with this task was trying to spell Kareem Abdual-Jabbar correctly in
order to a get a successful search. Everybody is going to misspell something, but that’s why
browser like Google have a spell check feature to help make the users’ searches quick and
efficient.
Alignment to Heuristics: Error Prevention
This heuristic is trying to tell us that careful designs prevent mistakes and errors from
happening from the start. If Sneaker Bar Detroit would have a spell check feature in their search
bar like Google does, then both test subjects would’ve found the answers they were looking for
quickly and efficiently.
Task #3: “You are a fan of the “Back to the Future” movies and you remember seeing a pair
of self-lacing Nikes from one of the futuristic scenes. Find the name of those shoes and what
the name means.”
Summary of Both Testers:
Tester 1 Tester 2 Average
Average Satisfaction 2 2 2
Success Rate 50% 50% 50%
Tester #1 Completion Process:
Since Spencer is really into streaming movies, he already knew how he wanted to
approach this task. For starters, he went to the search bar, as he has done previously, and
searched “Back to the Future Shoes” which didn’t give him the answer he was looking for. He
kept closing his eyes and repeating over and over, “I can see what they look like, but I don’t
remember what brand they were.” He then decided to just search just “Back to the Future”. As
Holtman 13
soon as the page loaded, he instantly saw the picture of the shoe in an article called “The
Original Nike Mag From “Back to the Future II” Sold for Over $90,000.” He was so excited that
he found the answer so quickly that he kept clicking the article instead of just double clicking it.
He found the name, “Nike Mag”, and noticed that it was in red. He then clicked on it and it
opened it up to an entirely new page on SBD with articles about the Nike Mag. He then
proceeded to try and find the meaning behind the name. He tried to Ctrl + F the word “mag” to
try and find the answer, but he just kept finding the name Nike Mag. Finally, after about another
five minutes worth of search he was getting flustered and angry, so he quit doing the task.
Overall, I would give this a 50% success rating because he found the name pretty quick and at
least attempted to find the meaning behind the name.
Tester #2 Completion Process:
This one of Tiffany’s favorite movies so she was really excited to do this one. She stated
that she remembered the shoes being a part of the Nike brand, so she typed in the search bar
“Back to the Future Nike”. To her surprised she found the same exact article that Spencer did.
Once she clicked on the article. As soon as the article loaded, she noticed right away that there
was an imbedded link in the words “Nike Mag”, so she clicked on it. As soon as she clicked on
it, she was taken to the page with all news articles pertaining to the Nike Mag. Shockingly,
Tiffany decided to also what Spencer and Ctrl + F the articles of on the page. She continued this
search for a couple minutes before she finally quit. She said, “I at least found out the name, so
that should count for something.” She then stated that she was done trying to find the answer and
decided to Google it which I allowed.
Biggest Problem:
Holtman 14
The biggest problem for this task was trying to figure out the meaning behind the name
Nike Mag. Both testers stated this it was nearly impossible because all the articles just kept
referring to the name.
Alignment to Heuristics: Match between system and the real world.
As I’ve already mentioned, this heuristic is trying to say that the system needs to
understand what the user’s trying to say. Both participants found their information using
concepts that were familiar to them that gave them information that pertained only to the Nike
Mag.
Task #4: “As you learn more about collectable sneakers, you continue to see and hear the
name Tinker Hatfield. Determine who this is and find the most recent news about him.”
Summary of Both Testers:
Tester 1 Tester 2 Average
Average Satisfaction 4 4 4
Success Rate 100% 100% 100%
Tester #1 Completion Process:
Spencer went straight to the search bar once again, but this time he only searched the
word “tinker”. He then started he would be mad if his search came up with Tinkerbell or
something along those lines. To his surprise he managed to find articles that talked about Tinker
Hatfield. He never clicked on the articles. Instead, he just read the headlines for each article and
came to a conclusion. Spencer went on to state that Tinker Hatfield was a shoe designer for Nike
and that he had some cool designs. Overall, he considered this task to be the easiest one out of
Holtman 15
the four. I would give this a 100% success rate because he actually found the answer he was
looking for.
Tester #2 Completion Process:
Tiffany recalled seeing Tinker Hatfield’s name in last article that she had pulled up. She
hit the back arrow that took her back to that article. Once she found his name, she copies it and
pasted his name into the search bar. From there she started to see a consistent trend of articles
that talk about his show designs. After read through a couple of the articles, she finally came to
the conclusion stating that he was well known shoe designer and contributor for Nike. Plus, she
found the same article about the Nike Mags. This task took her not even five minutes to complete
so I would give this full 100% success rate.
Biggest Problem:
There really weren’t any difficult problems with trying to perform this task for either
participant. I guess one helpful suggestion may be to try and establish Tinker Hatfield’s actual
role for Nike other than just a shoe designer.
Alignment to Heuristics: Consistency and Standards
This heuristic simply states that users shouldn’t have to question whether a words or
situations has a different meaning than what they’re used to. Even though both participants used
the same navigation tool, but in different ways, they managed to reach the same end result with
joy and relief instead of anger.
Final Site Thoughts: How do you about your browsing experience at
SneakerBarDetroit.com?
Holtman 16
Tester #1: After the usability test was over, Spencer still held a lot of the same views
about this website before we started the test. He still wasn’t fond of the layout for the website
and stated once again that, “it didn’t make any sense.” I proceeded to ask him if he could make
changes to the website right now, what would they be? Spencer went through and pointed out
that all the “release date” tabs in the navigation need to be combined as one drop-down menu. In
fact, Spencer also mentioned that the search bar could use some word especially when it came to
spell check or references. Overall, Spencer gave SneakerBarDetroit.com a rating of two because
of how difficult certain tasks were compared to others.
Tester #2: As I mentioned earlier, Tiffany mentioned the website seemed interesting, but
it wasn’t something she would always look at. Plus, she also mentioned that she felt that the
layout of the website nice and organized, but that opinion changed by the end of the usability
test. She really wasn’t fond of how the search bar required certain words or phrases to get the
desired outcome. Tiffany gave SneakerBarDetroit.com a rating of two because everything was a
mess and there was nothing that really caught her attention.
Similarities and Differences: Both users felt that there were certain tasks that were
either easier or harder than others and it didn’t stop there. Each user used different search
methods to find the answers they were looking for. In fact, both stated that the website was very
inconsistent when it came to specific searches methods or even how to approach the task at hand
in general. In fact, they both thought it was a not, but a constant trial and error experiment that
never ended. Another thing they both brought was that after I had mentioned to them that there’s
a podcast tied into the website and they both agreed that the podcasts would’ve been more
informational and entertaining if they would’ve known it from the start.
Recommendations to Improve User Experience
Holtman 17
Single Problem Being Fixed: Navigation
Both testers tended to user the search bar more than anything on the entire site. Although
there was one point where tester number 1 tried to use the “BRANDS” drop-down menu for the
first task, but it didn’t help. Plus, this can be a huge making or breaking point for a website,
especially when it comes to the two most common heuristics mentioned, error prevention and
matching between system and the real world. When people search things, they tend to use
descriptions that they know, especially if they can’t spell a word correctly. This could literally
change the way users use SneakerBarDetroit.com because they’ll be able to find the information
their looking for much quicker. Otherwise, they’re going to lose visitors because they’ll go to
Google or somewhere else to find their information.
Problem Improvement:
There are many ways to receive feedback from users about a website in order to correct
the errors they encountered. Most people would use Google Analytics to diagnose the problems
by looking at the certain metrics such as engagement, behavior flow, top content, etc. Another
way is through card staking or even paper prototypes that can help organize the content in a more
effective way based on the users needs. Now even though, I couldn’t do these specific methods
with each tester, I was still given some verbal examples of what both testers would want to see
when they use the site starting the with the navigation. I think that the navigation for
SneakerBarDetroit.com needs some revamping because both testers said that the navigation and
search tools were very inconsistent. Let’s look at what SneakerBarDetroit.com could look like
based of the results above.
Holtman 18
The navigation buttons at the top of the screen repeat a lot of the same information when
it is comes to the release dates. In fact, if all the release dates buttons were combined under one
drop-down menu, it would help organize the information a lot more clearly. By keeping the
navigation bar consistent with the logo (home button), brands, release dates and news could
really make a big difference. Plus, there isn’t really an about us feature on the home page, so
adding it navigation bar would also be beneficial and easily accessible to users who want to
know about who is running the site and what the goals of the site really are. Another thing to add
to the tool bar would be a button for The Shoe Box podcasts that would allow users to access the
latest episodes, highlights and more. Then there’s the search bar feature. Other websites tend to
have drop-down menu options that you can chose from when you type in specific words or
phrases as well as a spell check feature if you didn’t find the results you were looking for.
Adding in this feature would allow users to stay on the site longer instead of leaving to the site to
find the answers elsewhere.
Lastly, there’s the idea of using the filters option when searching through the articles. As
testers number 2 pointed out earlier, there was a filter option for the articles after using the search
bar, but there was one if you used one of the buttons on the navigation tool bar. By adding this
filter every results page would allow users to find the information they are looking for whether
it’s the most popular, most recent, etc.
Now that we’ve looked at the navigation tool bars at the top of the page, the rest of the
home page needs to be consistent and matching. The four main boxes on the home page really do
draw in the user’s attention. I would say that it would be best to keep the layout the same, but
just tweaking the elements within the boxes to feature the highlights for the release dates, news,
podcasts, and contact information. This will help engage user to stay on the website longer and to
Holtman 19
keep them updated on the most current information. Listed below are some screenshots of the

Colby Holtman_Usability Test for Sneaker Bar Detroit

  • 1. Holtman 1 Colby Holtman Jacquie Lamer Intro to Web Publishing March 9, 2021 Usability Test for SneakerBarDetroit.com Test Preparation To prepare for this usability test, I made sure to sit on the right side of the of the living room couch that faces directly at the TV and is parallel to the front door. My roommates had the TV on playing the hit TV show “Good Girls” on Netflix. I decided to put on my headphones and listen to Spotify as I did these tests so I wouldn’t be distracted by the show. I used my school laptop that was connected to our United Fiber internet connection. To access the website, I used the Google Chrome browser since that’s the only way I access any website for my classes or to shop online. For task number one I needed to find out what the most popular pair of Air Jordan’s were. First, I tried to go through the “BRANDS” tab by clicking on the “AIR JORDAN” button. From there I changed the filter to show the most popular, but it wasn’t giving me what I was looking for, so took a different approach. I then went to the search bar and typed “most popular air jordans”. As I was looking through the articles, I came across one called “The True Story Behind Banned Jordans”. Now typically I wouldn’t have considered this based on the title, but I decided to investigate it anyways. The article was published back in December 2020. The article talked about a Michael Jordan’s Jordan 1s he wore in his rookie years that the NBA had banned from wearing, but he wore them anyways. In fact, this created a major craze in the sneaker
  • 2. Holtman 2 world. After reading the article, I have determined that the Jordan 1s are the most popular type of Air Jordan’s because they were banned from the NBA in the 1980s. For task number 2, I followed the instructions to find out if Kareem Abdual-Jabbar had his own brand of sneakers or not. Instantly I went straight for the search bar. As I kept typing in the name, I kept misspelling it every time. Finally, I decided to just type in the word “Kareem” into the search bar just to see what would happen. To my surprise, I had some articles appear, except they weren’t about Kareem Abdual-Jabbar. In fact, the first three articles that popped up talked about Kareem “Biggs” Burke and his different shoes. I scrolled through the page and was really finding was I was looking for, so I decided to hit Ctrl + F and searched the word Jabbar. Only one article came up with Kareem Abdual-Jabbar’s name titled “Adidas Crazy 8 “Kareem Abdual Jabbar the Blueprint”. Although, the first thing I noticed about the article was that the picture was removed from the page, so that would explain why I must have skipped over it. I read through the rest of the article and found an attached link to adidas.com where you could purchase the shoes, but I never clicked on the link. Towards the end of the article it should that there were supposed to be more blueprints for the shoe, but there taken down from the website, leaving a bunch of negative space. I went back up the search bar and then typed in “jabbar” and only three articles popped up. The most recent post dated back to January of 2015. After looking through both articles, I have determined that Kareem Abdual-Jabbar has only two sneaker designs. Task number three consisted of trying to find the name and meaning behind the self- lacing Nike shoes from the move “Back to the Future”. Once again, I went straight to the search bar and search “Back to the Future”. Two pages worth of articles loaded on my screen, but it didn’t take me long to find the first part of this task. I noticed on the second article a picture of
  • 3. Holtman 3 the shoes that Marty wore in the movie. I then looked over at the title and right below that was part of the first sentence of the article that called these shoes the Nike Mag. I clicked on the article and as I read through the article, I noticed that there really wasn’t a definition of what the word “mag” stood for, so kept searching. I search through the entire first page of articles and didn’t have any luck at all until I got to the second page. On the second page, I found an article titled “UPDATE: 2015 Nike Mag to be Auctioned?” that was dated on October 21, 2015. Within the article I didn’t find the meaning behind the word “mag” until I noticed an imbedded video by a guy named Jacques Slade. I clicked the play button and he talked about the entire history of the shoe. In fact, he even mentioned that the word “mag” stood for “magnetized” which honestly makes sense if you think about it. Slade goes on to the mention that the shoes were “magnetized” was to help Marty stay on the hover board. This was one of the harder and longer tasks I had to complete. This task took roughly around 15-20 minutes. For the last task, I had to search for the name Tinker Hatfield. I remember reading his name in a couple of the article back from the third task. Just like all the previous tasks, I went back up to the search bar at the top of the page and search the name “Tinker Hatfield”. Once the page finally loaded with all the articles, I immediately checked all the dates that were published. Right away I noticed that the first article was dated on June 19, 2019 which seemed to be the most recent post. The article was titled “Nike Air Zoom Down Rock N7 Designed by Tinker Hatfield” which talked about Tinker’s new designs for the Air Zoom Down Rocks and the Zoom Heritage. Within the article it talked about how Tinker’s design was a collaboration with the music artist Taboo. From what I gathered from this article as well as the other articles is that Tinker Hatfield is a very well-known designer for Nike. I’ve got to say, he is extremely talented when it comes to designing a shoe. In fact, some of these designs really captured my attention
  • 4. Holtman 4 and made me want to buy them, but I’m in college and really don’t want to spend over $100 for a pair of shoes. This was by far the easiest task to complete because I already had seen Tinker’s name within the third task so spelling it wasn’t an issue. Plus, he was mentioned a lot in the articles about the Nike Mag. • 5. Holtman 5 Converses to Nike Air Force 1s. Another reason I chose Spencer as my test subject way due to the fact that I went to high school with him, and he was never a tech savvy type of person when it came to researching. In other words, he wants to find the answer he’s looking instantly otherwise he starts to lose interest. On the bright side though, Spencer was very communicative throughout each task which was very beneficial for this experiment and helped shed some light on some issues within the site. Environment for Tester #1 Location of Test: For this test, I met with Spencer at his house in person. We sat on his living room couch where he does the majority of his browsing and streaming. Physical Environment: The living room consisted of two full size couches, a recliner, a coffee table and two flat screen TVs. The room was mainly lit by the strands of Christmas lights that wrapped around the room along with the two TVs and corner lamp. The TV on the right was showing a college basketball game on ESPN while the one on the left had the NBA 2K21 video game pulled up from the Play Station. The TV’s became a distraction for Spencer because he was always checking the scores of the two games. Plus, he also kept getting distracted by his roommates that were cheering during the game while making dinner in the kitchen. Technical Environment: For the usability test, he used his own personal HP laptop that was connected to their Suddenlink network which crashed on us because there were so many devices connected to it. To access the website, Spencer used the Google Chrome browser. Upon opening the browser, I noticed that he only had two tabs open and they were both Nike.com where he was designing his own custom sneakers. He did have to stop halfway through the
  • 6. Holtman 6 second task, to plug in his laptop because it wasn’t fully charged. There weren’t any ad blockers or other apps being used while performing the tasks at hand. Tester #2 Details: Tiffany Bliley Tiffany Bliley is a 32-year-old high school science teacher that also holds the titles of head softball coach and assistant basketball coach. Much like Spencer, Tiffany doesn’t know a lot sneaker industry or about Sneaker Bar Detroit. In fact, that’s only just one reason why I chose her to be the second experiment. The other reason I chose her as a test subject was because she is my cousin and I know that the only brand of shoes she wears is Nike. Even when she was in high school, she wore nothing but Nike, especially when it came to playing basketball. Tiffany is a very tech savvy person, so it really didn’t take her long to complete majority of the tasks at hand. Environment for Tester #2 Location of Test: When conduction the usability test, I met her at our grandpa’s house since she lives with him ever since our grandma passed in 2016. Majority of the time she does all her browsing and schoolwork at the dining room table. Physical Environment: With the dining room, there are 6 wooden chairs surrounding the oval shaped table and she normally sits on the east side. She sat facing away from the TV that was playing in the living room which did cause some distraction from time to time. To the right of her sits a stack of chemistry exams. The room was lit by the small chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Technical Environment: To access the website, she used Google Chrome browser on her personal HP laptop that was connected to the United Fiber network. When she first opened the browser, I saw her click the minimized icon on the bottom of her screen. When the page
  • 7. Holtman 7 finally opened, I noticed that there were at least twelve different tabs open which would make sense since they were all presentations and homework for her students. Upon further inspection, there weren’t any ad blockers or other applications being used just like Spencer’s. Test Results Initial Site Thoughts Tester #1: The first thing that Spencer noticed was the images of the different shoes which made him think it was e-commerce website so he could buy these shoes. He also wasn’t very fond of the layout of the homepage. He kept repeating that, “it didn’t make any sense,” so his attitude towards the website was already negative. Plus, as soon as he saw that the website consisted of press releases and other news posts about the shoes, he disliked the website even more. Tester #2: Tiffany on the other hand liked the layout of the website. She stated that, “it was well organized website.” She scrolled through all the different tabs and even red some of the articles that were posted on the home page. She especially read the articles that delt with Nike. As she was reading, she really didn’t say a lot about the site. She continued to click and explore the site, but once she was finished, she stated that, “it seems like an interesting site, but it’s not something that she would check out on a daily basis.” In fact, she stated that this would be a website that some of her students would be interested in checking out to find the best shoes for basketball. Similarities and Differences: One of the biggest similarities that both testers did was instantly click on the fourth square that said “shop now” which took them to the eBay e- commerce site. They both weren’t fond of this because they both stated that, “it was misleading.”
  • 8. Holtman 8 They also both agreed that there were too many ads that popped up which tended to be distracting. In fact, there were times that they clicked on the ads on accident and get mad about having to hit the backspace button at the top of the screen. As I stated earlier, Spencer was never fond of the reading the articles because he mainly just wanted to see the pictures and know the names of the shoe. Meanwhile, Tiffany didn’t mind reading the articles at all. Another difference was that Spencer wasn’t fond of the layout because he said some of the navigation was too confusing. Tiffany didn’t mind the navigation and thought it wasn’t too difficult. Task #1: “You know that Air Jordans are popular, so you want to learn more. Determine the most popular (not just the most recent) Air Jordans, according to Sneaker Bar Detroit and its visitors.” Summary of Both Testers: Tester 1 Tester 2 Average Average Satisfaction 3 2 2.5 Success Rate 100% 50% 50% Tester #1 Completion Process: Spencer started from the home page and went up to the navigation tool at the top of the page. He proceeds to hover of the “BRANDS” tab and clicked on the “Air Jordans” drop down menu option. From there he hit the button Ctrl + F and search the word “top”. His search came up with fifteen different choices, but none of which gave him the answer he was looking for. He then noticed the search bar and typed in “top jordans”. He began to scroll down the page until he saw an article called “Top 10 Sneaker Releases of 2018” that was published on December 31, 2018 according to Sneaker Bar Detroit. After the article loaded, he went up and hit Ctrl + F once again and searched “jordans”. He proceeds to click through until he saw the highest ranked
  • 9. Holtman 9 Jordans. He then turned to me and point at the screen stated that the most popular Air Jordans were the Union x Air Jordan 1 because it was ranked the third highest out the ten shoes listed. He then proceeded to say that it was his final answer and he wasn’t going to change it. Now I’m not 100% sure if this is the correct answer or not due to the fact that this was published almost three ago and the answer might be different. Overall, it took Spencer roughly five minutes to find this answer, so I would give it a 100% success rate. Tester #2 Completion Process: Starting the home page, Tiffany noticed the search bar right way and entered “popular jordans”. The first thing she did was scroll the bottom to see if the page would end or keep going. To her surprise her search came up with three pages of articles that delt with popular Air Jordans. She then proceeded to scroll back up to the top and scroll back through the articles slowly. As she scrolled, she mentioned that the dates of the first five articles are all out of order compared to the rest of the articles. For example, there was an article published in 2013 that was before an article that was published in 2020. As she continued to scroll, she asked if she could change the filters on her search. I told her to try and see if she could. She searched the entire page and could not find the drop-down menu option that could adjust the filters. Annoyed by inconvenience, she went back up to the search bar and typed “popular air jordans”. To her surprise she found an article called, “Better “What the” Air Jordan: Air Jordan 4 or Air Jordan 5” that was published in November of 2020. After reading the article, she concluded that the Air Jordan 4 “What The” was the most popular based style and color of the shoe. As I stated earlier for Spencer’s response, I’m not for sure if this is the correct answer or not. This task took almost fifteen minutes to complete. On that note I would give this a 50% rate because she almost quit doing the task since she was struggling to find the answer she wanted.
  • 10. Holtman 10 Biggest Problem: Both users didn’t get the same answer. Not to mention they both used different methods to find their answers, but even at that it was still giving them troubles. Overall, the search bar navigation was very unsuccessful for both users since they had to do multiple searches. Alignment to Heuristics: Match between system and the real world. For this heuristic the system needs to understand the user’s lingo when it comes to searching certain words, phrases, or other concepts that the user is familiar with. As tester number 1 went straight to the “BRANDS” tab which would be the best fit scenario here since it gave the user access to Air Jordan articles. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, tester number 2 just used the search bar and then tried to filter her searches but couldn’t. Meanwhile, tester number 1 used the “Air Jordans” button under the “BRANDS” tab which allowed him to filter his searches, but tester number 1 didn’t notice that, and tester number 2 never tried it. Task #2: “Your favorite basketball player is Kareem Abdual-Jabbar. Determine whether or no Abdual-Jabbar has his own sneaker designs.” Summary of Both Testers: Tester 1 Tester 2 Average Average Satisfaction 1 1 1 Success Rate 0% 0% 0% Tester #1 Completion Process: First thing Spencer did go right back to the search bar and typed just typed the word “kareem” because he figured it was easier to spell. Much to his surprise he didn’t find the answer he was looking, which is exactly what happened to me. He went back to the search bar and tried
  • 11. Holtman 11 “jabar”. As he hit the enter button, the screen just sat there loading for at least three minutes. By this point he was starting to get a little irritated. When the page finally loaded, he scrolled through his results, but the kept coming up with Jabari Parker. Now he was extremely irritated and kept asking if he could just Google it. I told him he could only use this website and this website only. He then four mar different spellings, but he wasn’t getting the results he was looking for. Finally, he decided to give up because he couldn’t figure out the spelling. This task went on for almost ten minutes, and since he wasn’t getting the answers he was looking for, I would give this a 0% success rating Tester #2 Completion Process: The first thing Tiffany did when I presented her the task was look at me and said, “I have no idea how to spell his name.” I proceeded to tell her to try her best and see what would happen. She made her way to the search bar and tried the word “Jabar” which didn’t work. Next, she tried the word “Jah Bar”, which didn’t work either. Much like Spencer, she was getting irritated. She tried to ask me how to spell it and I told her I couldn’t assist her. After a couple more failed attempts, she sat there and stared at the computer screen for a couple minutes. She then decided to try using the “SNEAKER RELEASE DATES” navigation button. From there, she tried to Ctrl + F method to help with her search, but she still wasn’t getting any results. Finally, she decided to call it quits and wanted to move on to the next task. She continued to say that, “this was a ridiculous task because nobody knows how to spell his name perfectly.” Overall, this was a very unsuccessful task. Biggest Problem:
  • 12. Holtman 12 The biggest problem with this task was trying to spell Kareem Abdual-Jabbar correctly in order to a get a successful search. Everybody is going to misspell something, but that’s why browser like Google have a spell check feature to help make the users’ searches quick and efficient. Alignment to Heuristics: Error Prevention This heuristic is trying to tell us that careful designs prevent mistakes and errors from happening from the start. If Sneaker Bar Detroit would have a spell check feature in their search bar like Google does, then both test subjects would’ve found the answers they were looking for quickly and efficiently. Task #3: “You are a fan of the “Back to the Future” movies and you remember seeing a pair of self-lacing Nikes from one of the futuristic scenes. Find the name of those shoes and what the name means.” Summary of Both Testers: Tester 1 Tester 2 Average Average Satisfaction 2 2 2 Success Rate 50% 50% 50% Tester #1 Completion Process: Since Spencer is really into streaming movies, he already knew how he wanted to approach this task. For starters, he went to the search bar, as he has done previously, and searched “Back to the Future Shoes” which didn’t give him the answer he was looking for. He kept closing his eyes and repeating over and over, “I can see what they look like, but I don’t remember what brand they were.” He then decided to just search just “Back to the Future”. As
  • 13. Holtman 13 soon as the page loaded, he instantly saw the picture of the shoe in an article called “The Original Nike Mag From “Back to the Future II” Sold for Over $90,000.” He was so excited that he found the answer so quickly that he kept clicking the article instead of just double clicking it. He found the name, “Nike Mag”, and noticed that it was in red. He then clicked on it and it opened it up to an entirely new page on SBD with articles about the Nike Mag. He then proceeded to try and find the meaning behind the name. He tried to Ctrl + F the word “mag” to try and find the answer, but he just kept finding the name Nike Mag. Finally, after about another five minutes worth of search he was getting flustered and angry, so he quit doing the task. Overall, I would give this a 50% success rating because he found the name pretty quick and at least attempted to find the meaning behind the name. Tester #2 Completion Process: This one of Tiffany’s favorite movies so she was really excited to do this one. She stated that she remembered the shoes being a part of the Nike brand, so she typed in the search bar “Back to the Future Nike”. To her surprised she found the same exact article that Spencer did. Once she clicked on the article. As soon as the article loaded, she noticed right away that there was an imbedded link in the words “Nike Mag”, so she clicked on it. As soon as she clicked on it, she was taken to the page with all news articles pertaining to the Nike Mag. Shockingly, Tiffany decided to also what Spencer and Ctrl + F the articles of on the page. She continued this search for a couple minutes before she finally quit. She said, “I at least found out the name, so that should count for something.” She then stated that she was done trying to find the answer and decided to Google it which I allowed. Biggest Problem:
  • 14. Holtman 14 The biggest problem for this task was trying to figure out the meaning behind the name Nike Mag. Both testers stated this it was nearly impossible because all the articles just kept referring to the name. Alignment to Heuristics: Match between system and the real world. As I’ve already mentioned, this heuristic is trying to say that the system needs to understand what the user’s trying to say. Both participants found their information using concepts that were familiar to them that gave them information that pertained only to the Nike Mag. Task #4: “As you learn more about collectable sneakers, you continue to see and hear the name Tinker Hatfield. Determine who this is and find the most recent news about him.” Summary of Both Testers: Tester 1 Tester 2 Average Average Satisfaction 4 4 4 Success Rate 100% 100% 100% Tester #1 Completion Process: Spencer went straight to the search bar once again, but this time he only searched the word “tinker”. He then started he would be mad if his search came up with Tinkerbell or something along those lines. To his surprise he managed to find articles that talked about Tinker Hatfield. He never clicked on the articles. Instead, he just read the headlines for each article and came to a conclusion. Spencer went on to state that Tinker Hatfield was a shoe designer for Nike and that he had some cool designs. Overall, he considered this task to be the easiest one out of
  • 15. Holtman 15 the four. I would give this a 100% success rate because he actually found the answer he was looking for. Tester #2 Completion Process: Tiffany recalled seeing Tinker Hatfield’s name in last article that she had pulled up. She hit the back arrow that took her back to that article. Once she found his name, she copies it and pasted his name into the search bar. From there she started to see a consistent trend of articles that talk about his show designs. After read through a couple of the articles, she finally came to the conclusion stating that he was well known shoe designer and contributor for Nike. Plus, she found the same article about the Nike Mags. This task took her not even five minutes to complete so I would give this full 100% success rate. Biggest Problem: There really weren’t any difficult problems with trying to perform this task for either participant. I guess one helpful suggestion may be to try and establish Tinker Hatfield’s actual role for Nike other than just a shoe designer. Alignment to Heuristics: Consistency and Standards This heuristic simply states that users shouldn’t have to question whether a words or situations has a different meaning than what they’re used to. Even though both participants used the same navigation tool, but in different ways, they managed to reach the same end result with joy and relief instead of anger. Final Site Thoughts: How do you about your browsing experience at SneakerBarDetroit.com?
  • 16. Holtman 16 Tester #1: After the usability test was over, Spencer still held a lot of the same views about this website before we started the test. He still wasn’t fond of the layout for the website and stated once again that, “it didn’t make any sense.” I proceeded to ask him if he could make changes to the website right now, what would they be? Spencer went through and pointed out that all the “release date” tabs in the navigation need to be combined as one drop-down menu. In fact, Spencer also mentioned that the search bar could use some word especially when it came to spell check or references. Overall, Spencer gave SneakerBarDetroit.com a rating of two because of how difficult certain tasks were compared to others. Tester #2: As I mentioned earlier, Tiffany mentioned the website seemed interesting, but it wasn’t something she would always look at. Plus, she also mentioned that she felt that the layout of the website nice and organized, but that opinion changed by the end of the usability test. She really wasn’t fond of how the search bar required certain words or phrases to get the desired outcome. Tiffany gave SneakerBarDetroit.com a rating of two because everything was a mess and there was nothing that really caught her attention. Similarities and Differences: Both users felt that there were certain tasks that were either easier or harder than others and it didn’t stop there. Each user used different search methods to find the answers they were looking for. In fact, both stated that the website was very inconsistent when it came to specific searches methods or even how to approach the task at hand in general. In fact, they both thought it was a not, but a constant trial and error experiment that never ended. Another thing they both brought was that after I had mentioned to them that there’s a podcast tied into the website and they both agreed that the podcasts would’ve been more informational and entertaining if they would’ve known it from the start. Recommendations to Improve User Experience
  • 17. Holtman 17 Single Problem Being Fixed: Navigation Both testers tended to user the search bar more than anything on the entire site. Although there was one point where tester number 1 tried to use the “BRANDS” drop-down menu for the first task, but it didn’t help. Plus, this can be a huge making or breaking point for a website, especially when it comes to the two most common heuristics mentioned, error prevention and matching between system and the real world. When people search things, they tend to use descriptions that they know, especially if they can’t spell a word correctly. This could literally change the way users use SneakerBarDetroit.com because they’ll be able to find the information their looking for much quicker. Otherwise, they’re going to lose visitors because they’ll go to Google or somewhere else to find their information. Problem Improvement: There are many ways to receive feedback from users about a website in order to correct the errors they encountered. Most people would use Google Analytics to diagnose the problems by looking at the certain metrics such as engagement, behavior flow, top content, etc. Another way is through card staking or even paper prototypes that can help organize the content in a more effective way based on the users needs. Now even though, I couldn’t do these specific methods with each tester, I was still given some verbal examples of what both testers would want to see when they use the site starting the with the navigation. I think that the navigation for SneakerBarDetroit.com needs some revamping because both testers said that the navigation and search tools were very inconsistent. Let’s look at what SneakerBarDetroit.com could look like based of the results above.
  • 18. Holtman 18 The navigation buttons at the top of the screen repeat a lot of the same information when it is comes to the release dates. In fact, if all the release dates buttons were combined under one drop-down menu, it would help organize the information a lot more clearly. By keeping the navigation bar consistent with the logo (home button), brands, release dates and news could really make a big difference. Plus, there isn’t really an about us feature on the home page, so adding it navigation bar would also be beneficial and easily accessible to users who want to know about who is running the site and what the goals of the site really are. Another thing to add to the tool bar would be a button for The Shoe Box podcasts that would allow users to access the latest episodes, highlights and more. Then there’s the search bar feature. Other websites tend to have drop-down menu options that you can chose from when you type in specific words or phrases as well as a spell check feature if you didn’t find the results you were looking for. Adding in this feature would allow users to stay on the site longer instead of leaving to the site to find the answers elsewhere. Lastly, there’s the idea of using the filters option when searching through the articles. As testers number 2 pointed out earlier, there was a filter option for the articles after using the search bar, but there was one if you used one of the buttons on the navigation tool bar. By adding this filter every results page would allow users to find the information they are looking for whether it’s the most popular, most recent, etc. Now that we’ve looked at the navigation tool bars at the top of the page, the rest of the home page needs to be consistent and matching. The four main boxes on the home page really do draw in the user’s attention. I would say that it would be best to keep the layout the same, but just tweaking the elements within the boxes to feature the highlights for the release dates, news, podcasts, and contact information. This will help engage user to stay on the website longer and to
