It covers preconstruction planning, project scheduling, cost management, resource management, health and safety, and quality management. Assessment includes a written report, presentation, and final exam evaluating students' understanding of planning, scheduling, resource management, safety legislation, and quality principles.

This module aims to provide the student with the basic concepts, knowledge and techniques of management used within the construction industry including
communication skills and teamwork skills.
Preconstruction Process: Opportunity and Feasibility Studies, Design development.
Project Planning Techniques: Work breakdown structures, linear control charts, flow diagrams, Gantt charts, network diagrams, linear scheduling method.
Project Cost Management: Cost budgeting, life cycle costing, cost breakdown structure, cost-benefit analysis, discounted cash flow techniques (NPV, EAC, IRR)
Management of Resources: Labour, materials, subcontractors, equipment.
Health and Safety: Introduction to statutory regulations, responsibilities of all parties, safety plans, safety hazards on site.
Quality Management: Quality Management systems, quality policy, quality planning, quality assurance, quality control, quality improvement.
Administration: Presentation skills; Team work and group dynamics; Negotiation process; Computer applications for presentations.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
1. Plan and schedule civil engineering projects from inception to the commencement of construction.
2. Manage all material and equipment resources relating to civil engineering projects.
3. Demonstrate and apply human resource management skills to civil engineering projects.
4. Understand and interpret health and safety legislation and its application to civil engineering design and construction operations.
5. Appreciate the basic principles of quality management systems and their application to civil engineering work.
6. demonstrate the ability to make a professional presentation using various IT skills on aspects of the organisation and administration of the building process.
7. demonstrate an ability to develop a PBL project within a group structure.
