June 2013
To whomsoever it may concern.
Clem Pohl: Project manager, mentor farmer, horticulturist / agronomist.
Clem Pohl has been involved in various projects for my company during the
last three years.
• Manyeding Agricultural Co-operative Project: A community project
designed to supply income, food and knowledge to the local
population.
The project involved the restoration of an old 50ha rice project
abandoned about 10 years ago and which had become completely
overgrown with weeds. The dam of two hectares that is fed by an
artesian well and subterranean water for which Kuruman is well known,
was derelict, the pumps missing and pipes broken.
The reincarnation of the project was to involve fencing the project,
reinstalling pumps and installation of a new irrigation system.
Thereafter the development initially of 5 hectares of land by organic
method, planting a wide range of vegetable and herb varieties, as a
trial to see which would suit the local climatic conditions.
This was to be extended in future years to 100 hectares.
Clem was responsible for project installation following the time line and
budget set in the business plan. He was also responsible for planning
the day-to-day activities, planting programmes and the smooth running
of the project in general.
At the end of 14 months the first phase was successfully completed
and Clem’s contribution to the project came to an end. He proved to
be reliable, competent and though dealing with at times difficult people
managed the difficulties well.
• Clem was due to have started another similar project near Rustenburg
working for Anglo-American, later in 2012 but the project was put on
hold due to delays caused by red tape.
• Early in 2013 Clem did a short project (about three months), working

near Chaka’s Kraal in Kwa Zulu Natal. There is a great deal of interest
in using bamboo as an alternate source to coal for combustion in
furnaces by platinum mines. It is quick growing and when made into
brickets provides a clean burning fuel.
The project involved the cutting down of about 500 tons of bamboo,
stacking it and arranging transport to the facility where it would be
burned and tested.
Clem finished the job within the time limit set and by alteration and
good management of the production process increased labour output
by at least 50%.
Clem remains on our short list for other projects we have in the pipeline.
Yours faithfully,
David Wolstenholme
Managing Director
