Evaluation
I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Ms. Clea Felien as my graduate
advisor in both my first and my last semesters in my Master of Fine Art, Visual Arts
program.
Clea is a master of painting and a superlative instructor. She is savvy to the arts and
shares her professional experience with unfettered generosity. Her artwork and
knowledge of critical theory are fresh and contemporary. We can richly paint handling,
professional practices, or art theory. She is a one of the most devoted educators that I
have ever met.
Clea gives considered and thorough critiques that never fail to push me into greater
critical, technical and aesthetic inquiry. She will not leave stones unturned in during
studio visits, nor will she miss any opportunity to coax me to grow and mature. At the
same time, she will take the time to encourage me to believe in my practice.
Clea turns my questions into teaching moments. Among many things I learned, was to
prepare my studio, present my work professionally-- level, hung at midline, well lit. This
lesson removed distractions, allowing me to benefit even more from her critique while
developing professional practices. She's also advised me about methods to self-
critique that I now do regularly.
I enthusiastically recommend her as an educator, artist and person of character.
