The document discusses concepts for gateway and interstate signage for the City of Salina, Kansas. It considers six potential locations for gateway signs at major city entrances and evaluates design considerations like enhancing arrival, conveying quality, and establishing community identity. Concepts are presented for signs at 9th Street and I-70, including different letter sizes. Guidelines are provided for interstate signage size based on vehicle speed and letter visibility. Designs are outlined for signs on I-135 and I-70 with dimensions and costs provided. The commission is asked to provide direction on the designs, locations, cost estimates, potential KDOT funding, and prioritization of signage types.
3. Gateway Signage Considerations
General
Six possible locations, N. Ohio, North St., Crawford, W. Magnolia, W. Schilling, and S. Ninth.
The “gateway signs” should be attractive visual elements welcoming visitors into our
community while establishing a quality first impression of our community and projecting an
exciting sense of arrival. The Signs should incorporate landscaping and lighting to enhance
the adjacent area while incorporating the streetscape.
Considerations
1. Enhance key gateway entries,
2. Create an exciting sense of arrival,
3. Convey a sense of quality and comfort,
4. Create a distinct image or design,
5. Establish a common theme and identity for the community, “branding,”
6. Incorporate site specific features, topography, views, land use, size,
7. Evaluate utilities, availability of water and electricity.
Size and Location
1. Signs should relate to the size and scale of the location
2. Signs should be located to be visible and legible
3. Signs should NOT conflict vehicular/pedestrian movement & visibility
4. Signs should be oriented to enhance entry traffic visibility.
4. Gateway Signage Considerations
Materials and Color Palette
1. Signage design should consider site features, native landscaping and other natural
resources.
2. Sign design should promote the natural environment, use of durable, native materials.
Landscaping
1. Signs should be in a landscaped area, sized to complement the size of the sign.
2. Landscaping should promote low water use climate appropriate & site specific.
3. Future plant height should be considered so mature plants do not block the signage.
Lighting
1. Sign illumination should complement the elements.
2. Illumination should be designed to avoid nuisance or hazards.
3. Signs should be externally illuminated, concealed ground source, photocell or timer.
4. Light sources should be concealed from pedestrians’ and motorists’ “line of sight.”
